Secondly, there is another theme that was seen in the novel and that theme is social norms. In this novel there was a parallel plot, which mean that the writer intertwines two or more plots that are commonly connected by characters or certain themes. Within this novel the parallel plot is the time 1976 and 1800’s. When looking at the parallel plot, there is a theme between the two time periods that is social norms. When Dana travels back in time the social norm is that interracial couples are illegal, a slave owner can have children with the slaves and slaves shouldn’t be educated. Which Dana notices the third time she goes back with Kevin and Rufus sees them together. When Dana explains to Rufus that they are married he replies “Niggers can’t marry white people!”(Butler 60). …show more content…

Which isn’t the way it is in the 1976, therefore Dana and Kevin are able to get married without all of the serious repercussions compared to the 1800’s. However, in the 1800’s the slave owners could have kids with the slaves, but the kids kept the status as slaves. Which Dana noticed then states “I’d seen Margaret Weylin slap one of them hard across the face the child had done nothing more than toddle into her path. If she was willing to punish a child for her husband’s sins…” (Butler 85). With this quote it shows that one that one it was appropriate to have slaves and that even if they were the kids of the slave owner, but they still keep the status of slave.
