Secondly, there is another theme that was seen in the novel and that theme is social norms. In this novel there was a parallel plot, which mean that the writer intertwines two or more plots that are commonly connected by characters or certain themes. Within this novel the parallel plot is the time 1976 and 1800’s. When looking at the parallel plot, there is a theme between the two time periods that is social norms. When Dana travels back in time the social norm is that interracial couples are illegal, a slave owner can have children with the slaves and slaves shouldn’t be educated. Which Dana notices the third time she goes back with Kevin and Rufus sees them together. When Dana explains to Rufus that they are married he replies “Niggers can’t marry white people!”(Butler 60). …show more content…
Which isn’t the way it is in the 1976, therefore Dana and Kevin are able to get married without all of the serious repercussions compared to the 1800’s. However, in the 1800’s the slave owners could have kids with the slaves, but the kids kept the status as slaves. Which Dana noticed then states “I’d seen Margaret Weylin slap one of them hard across the face the child had done nothing more than toddle into her path. If she was willing to punish a child for her husband’s sins…” (Butler 85). With this quote it shows that one that one it was appropriate to have slaves and that even if they were the kids of the slave owner, but they still keep the status of slave. Whereas in the 1976 slavery has been abolished and isn’t accepted anymore. Overall the social norms influence the way people act and the things that people think are
Slavery is an institution that repetitively separates family members and close friends from each other, without any regard to those people. This aids in disrupting the heteronormative nuclear family relationship greatly. Frederick Douglass said that “My mother and I were separated when I was but an infant…” and that “It is a common custom…to part children from their mothers at a very early age.”(pg. 1). This showing that most children that were born into slavery would grow up having no relationship at all with their own mothers. Also, a lot of slaves were born into slavery by the fact that “children of slave women shall in all cases follow the condition of their mothers,” (pg. 2) and the slaveholder now holds the title of father and master. With being torn from their mother at a young age and having your own father be your master, completely takes away the chance of a child that is born into slavery from having the “normal” nuclear family relationship.
In Kindred, by Olivia Butler a main character name Dana traveled back in time where she battled the face of inequalities. Danas journey back to the past is to help the readers understand what African-Americans had to experience and what they had to go through as a slave to be a free person. There was a lack of human rights for blacks, blacks were vulnerability with sexual assault and rape. Dana had dealt with her own experiences has being a slave with discrimination from Rufus, rape, racism, and abuse. She had self taught herself about slavery which gave her knowledge to prepare herself for what she had coming.
One similarity between Dana and Alice is that they both must become slaves on a plantation. In the novel Dana is a free and independent woman. After she time travels back to the early 1800s, she has to save Rufus from multiple situations to ensure that his daughter, Hagar, is born and her family tree stays intact. This means she will be spending a lot of time in 1800s Maryland. Dana must act as a slave in order to keep her identity of being a time traveler a secret. “We’re going to have to fit in as best as we can with the people here for as long as we stay. This means we are going to have to play the roles you gave us” (65). In this conversation Dana is telling her husband and Rufus
America in the 1950s had many social norms that everyone was expected to follow. If
Secondly, the discrepancy between times moves the drama in the plot along, in particular, Dana’s relationship with Rufus. Once Dana learns that her purpose is to protect the life of Rufus, in order to continue her own family line, she takes on the maternal role. She teaches him the lessons of discipline and respect for others that have been considered the parents role:
Their relatives didn’t agree to this marriage, but they chose love instead of going along with societal norms. Dana suffered some bruises from the times she was beat from Rufe and his father. One time after Dana returned to present day, she leaned on her cousin for support through her healing process. Dana said “She took one look at me and recommended a doctor she knew. She also advised me to send the police after Kevin.
The Book Kindred by Octavia Butler is about an African American Named Dana who began to travel through time for no apparent reason. She travels in the past time to save her Forerunner Rufus with the help of Kevin joining along with her through this conflict. In these times slavery still existed by which Dana and Kevin goes through obstacles of White slave owners trying to catch and kill Dana for mistaken her as one of the “slaves”. Massive racism existed in these times which is why Dana is trying to keep away from being captured or killed from white supremacists by Having his husband pretending to be a slave owner of Dana since he is white. But going through time is risky such as These character will start to change and develop different characteristics
The main characters of Dana (the time traveler), Kevin (her husband), Rufus (the ancestor), and Alice (his slave) each encounter a shift in obligations throughout the timeline of the novel. The encompassing sense of obligations experienced by characters
In Octavia Butler’s novel, Kindred, she challenges humanity, moralities, and racism. By sending Dana through time, it highlighted the similarities and differences between characters and symbolic meanings. The theme of this novel is answering the question to “what if” a black woman, raised with rights, had to endure slavery? What tactics would she use in order to survive? Many people cannot imagine the agonies slavery has caused, not only to blacks, but everyone including loss of freedom, family, loved ones and self. The interracial couples in the novel, Dana and Kevin; Alice and Rufus, symbolize a larger issue of segregation that divides of our nation. The antagonist, Rufus, changed throughout his life as Dana tried to teach him
It was dangerous for Dana because she spoke as the educated women that she was, so when talking with someone new they would comment on her educated speech. “It was dangerous to educate slaves, they warned. Education made blacks dissatisfied with slavery. It spoiled them for field work. The Methodist minister said it made them disobedient, made them want more than the Lord intended them to have. “(Butler, 236). With the lack of education given to the slaves it is hard to know and understand just how bad things truly got. When Dana time- travels she is treated as one of the slaves because she doesn’t have papers saying that she is freewomen, considering she is living in the 1900s. Throughout the novel Dana protects Rufus from many things because she sees it as crucial for her to help because if he were to die then her life could be altered drastically. Those who helped free the slaves as Kevin did when he got taken back in time are also seemingly forgotten. With the risk of getting caught, whether it was teaching the slaves or assisting them to run away. Those whether black or white put their lives on the line to help those who couldn’t help
In the first chapter of Phyl Newbeck’s book Virginia Hasn’t always been for Lovers: Interracial Marriage Bans and the Case of Richard and Mildred Loving, Newbeck introduces the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, a “white” male and “colored” female who married. Their love was pure and home some. When the two married Mildred did not realize, it was illegal for people of different races to marry in Virginia. The Lovings lived in Central Point, Virginia their entire lives until the state forced them to move out of the state and into Washington D.C, where their marriage was legal. The couple could not even travel into Virginia to visit family without being arrested.
A norm and value can either be accepted or refused by society. A norms or a values needs to go through a big process to be accepted by society. In the past, people wanted to do something but are not accepted by society, like problems over gender roles, race relation, and sexual orientation. It has raised a lots of arguments, and cause tension as well. Society has started to accept things which weren’t accepted in the past.
In the 1950’s such marriages were not acceptable in all of the states. Interracial marriages was not only the different thing in the modern family but also was that homosexual marriages. Homosexuals were never accepted, they were always considered to be sick. In never had anyone thought that homosexuals would be able to be married, much less be able to have a family. In the same show Gloria’s step son adopts a baby girl from vietnam.
It is really crazy to think that at one-time no one was allowed to marry outside of their own race. The reason I think this is absurd is because we all know race is just a social construction that is purely based on the way someone looks (Eshleman & Bulcroft, 2010, p. 191). We are all part of the human race in my
