Fledgling is the story of an apparently young, amnesiac girl, whose alarming unhuman needs and abilities lead her to a startling conclusion. She is in fact a genetically modified, 53 year old vampire. Forced to discover what she can about her stolen former life, at the same time learn who wanted and still wants to destroy her and those she cares for. This is a very interesting parable that tests the limits of otherness and questions what it means to be truly human.
First, Angela Johnson’s book “Bird” is like a poem that flows together, but sometimes confusing. The author words her book very well, she uses different events in the story to describe different themes. Bird, thirteen year old, is the main character in the book. Bird is very young but she takes on many difficult task on her own, but after she makes friends everything is easier for her.
The effect of the dashes in “by long-continued succession of notes and phrases, by swoops, bleats, echoes, rapidly repeated bebops-I mean rebopped bebops-...” represent the short pauses that someone would hear in Birds musc.
Pg. 107 Amir saw Baba cry for the first time. Baba is a real man.
The expression "riddled with guilt" is a good way to describe the main character's life, Amir, in the book The Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini. The Kite Runner is a story about an Afghan boy, Amir, who has many hardships throughout his life as he grows from a boy living in war-torn Afghanistan, to a successful writer living in America. Amir experiences many events that caused him to carry a great amount of guilt throughout his life. So much guilt that it even turned him into an insomniac. He needed to find a way to make amends which would allow him to forgive himself and hopefully, one day, be able to sleep soundly again.
Something that extremely irritated and disturbed me in chapters 6 through 9 was how Amir had the audacity (when he was a child) to treat Hassan incompetently, not considering him as a friend, nor entitling him as one verbally to others. He never stood up for Hassan and never has. He admitted that he "always envied his natural athleticism" (Hosseini 53). Amir just wants to be acknowledge by Baba, but he knows he never will because he isnt the athletic nor strong-minded son his father wanted, however Hassan was. Its so insulting of Amir to say "I had been mean to Hassan [and] almost apologized, then didn't" (Hosseini 60). It just goes to show that even though he felt guilty he didn't let Hassan be aware of it. This scene portrays how insecure
Gung Ho, by Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles was a wonderful book that discussed many important factors involved in making a company truly successful. It had a good storyline to help to tell the story of Gung Ho. When I first picked up the book to read it I really had no idea what to expect to learn from the book. The points that were made in this book were very simple and common sense principles. I say that these principles are simple, but many companies do not think of these little things when running a large business. They try to go “by the book” and get too caught up in sticking to their rules and regulations. Sometimes you just have to use a little common sense when running a business.
The book Endangered is about the journey of survival and the connection between a young American girl (Sophie) and a bonobo monkey (Otto) in The Democratic Republic of the Congo. Sophie’s mother lives in the Congo and runs a bonobo sanctuary. While on her way to the sanctuary to visit her mother for the summer, Sophie sees a man on the side of the road with a bonobo. She notices how malnourished and how bad the bonobo looks and against the rules of her mother, Sophie purchases the bonobo. When she reaches the sanctuary her mother is upset because even though she had good intentions of saving the bonobos life, bargaining with the man Sophie inadvertently promoted the illegal sale of the endangered bonobos. While at the sanctuary Sophie struggles to improve Otto’s health and a
In the short story “Feathertop” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a potent witch, Mother Rigby, brings her creation of a scarecrow to life. This scarecrow, which she calls Feathertop because of the feather on the top of his hat, is capable of walking and speaking like a normal human man. This is why Mother Rigby decides to send him into town to win the affection of Polly Gookin, Judge Gookin’s daughter. As the two begin to fall in love they stare into a bewitched mirror which shows that Feathertop is not a man, but a scarecrow. He then stops smoking the pipe Mother Rigby provided him with, resulting in the end of his short life. The main theme found within this story is deception or the illusion of life. Both Mother Rigby and Feathertop are examples of being deceitful because Mother Rigby deceits Feathertop, allowing him to deceit the members of the town and himself. This
The Kite Runner written by Khaled Hosseini can be seen as a great book but at the same time one that is too simple and easy. In discussions of The Kite Runner, one controversial issue has been the inner levels of the novel. On one hand, many people believe that the novel is filled with numerous themes that are deep and make one think about the human experience and will leave you thinking long after you finish reading it. On the other hand, there are also many literary critics who contend that opinion and say that the novel is overly sentimental and simplistic. The view I obtained while reading The Kite Runner would be in agreement with the first statement. I also believe that the novel is deep and makes one think

The historical novel Segu by Maryse Condé is set in the African country of Segu during a time of great cultural change. The African Slave Trade, the spread of Islam, and personal identity challenges were all tremendous and far-reaching issues facing Africa from the late 1700s to early 1800s. Condé uses the four brothers of the Traore family, Tiekoro, Malobali, Siga, and Naba, to demonstrate the impact that the issues of Islam, slave trade, and identity had on African people through the development of each character. A romantic drama film is a genre that explores the difficult aspects that come with love. The plot usually includes two people that are in love that can’t be together the way they want to be due to obstacles. The obstacles in a romantic drama film can include a family 's disapproval, to forbidden love, to one 's own psychological restrictions. The Notebook is a movie based on a best-selling novel that was written by author Nicholas Sparks. This is a love story that is composed of a series of obstacles between two young people that are madly in love with each other. It perfectly fits and displays the criteria for a successful romantic drama film because it includes the complexity of love, and elicits emotions.
