Eleanor Roosevelt once said "The future belongs to those who beleive in the beauty of their dreams." To me, that is the quintensential meaning of perseverance. What is perseverance? Perseverance is the ability to go on when things seem hopeless. It is also the ruler whereby one can measure of success. or at least how much sacrifice one is willing to make in the name of success. As students it is impossible to achieve personal success without having goals or directions. The goal and direction that often propels us to achieve is perseverance. Perseverance is the ability to forge ahead despite setbacks that threaten to undermine all efforts to succeed. Michael Jordan is thought by many to be the greatest basketball player of all times. …show more content…
There is no shame in falling; the shame is in accepting the the fall as defeat. Nelson Mandella once said, "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time you fall." That is the essence of persevering--finding the will to get up even though you know you are being counted out.
Each day is a challenge for some of us. Some of us struggle to get up each morning and make it to school. But we find it within ourselves to do because the hope of a better tomorrow compels us to do so. It is not easy to explain to teachers or other students that there was no one to wake you up and see that you were ready for school. The moment you leave your house and step on the bus, you are one step closer to realizing your dream, to fulfilling your purpose. That is what perseverance is. It is the finding the strength to do the impossible because you know that all things are possible. It is understanding that your tomorrow has great possibilities because of the steps you take today. I had a neighbor whose parents were divorced, but it seems like both parents divorced her. Her mother had custody, but she was seldom around. My friend raised herself. She gave a whole new meaning to the phrase "putting yourself through school", but she was in middle school. However, she had a dream of something better and it was evident that it required self-motivation and determination.
Giving up
It is a concept that has been shown to me by my parents’ struggles throughout their lives. My dad persevered to get where he is today. He grew up fairly poor and was determined to make a better life for himself, so he didn’t let anything get in the way. Even when he was eighteen living in a dilapidated nine dollar hotel and hanging power lines in the bitter Iowan winter, he didn’t give up. He said that even though he felt hopeless, he knew he had to preserve. Perseverance is not giving up when facing struggles and my dad is the embodiment of that concept. By my dad persevering through his struggles, he showed me that I cannot let obstacles be my demise. Another person who has displayed perseverance in my life is my mom. When I was about four, my loving, caring grandma died. This greatly affected my mom, but even though she was in pain she put on a brave face for me and my brother, and I think that this is a great example of perseverance. This also makes me want to be brave and have perseverance when I face challenges in my own life because if she got through hard times in her life then I can too. The people around me have shaped my idea of perseverance by the way that they have displayed it in their
There comes a time in life when perseverance shows one’s true potential. The story“Unbroken” written by Laura Hillenbrand shows legendary runner Louie Zamperini and showed how he truly represented that. Throughout this story it displays what the true meaning of perseverance; whether, it’s something as little as staying committed to track or fighting in World War Two and trying to fight for life even if there seems like there’s nothing to fight for. If someone is commited no matter the time or the difficulty that doesn’t just show perseverance, but it shows one’s true ability to fight for and try for something they want to accomplish.
Perseverance is something that everyone experiences in their life. The definition of perseverance is “steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.”. Perseverance is a big theme in the story “Into the Wild” by John Krakauer. Chris McCandless had to go through a lot of perseverance to get to Alaska. When Chris first started his adventure he needed to break free from the high life style that he was raised in, also the abuse and lies his father has caused on him and his family.
How many times in life have you struggled but got through a difficult time? That is called perseverance. The definition of perseverance is “Steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.” Synonyms are persistence and determination. It originated from the latin word perseverare. Right now the world has been filled with natural disasters, from hurricanes to wildfires. Everyone that this affected has been forced to persevere through it because there is not much that they have the ability to do besides staying strong. In all of the nonfiction literature we have read there were many different examples of perseverance from many different people. I decided to choose three. For my first example Melba Pattillo Beals from “Warriors Don’t Cry”. There is numerous examples of the Little Rock 9 and her doing something despite difficulty. For the second example of perseverance I chose Maya Angelou. Through her life there were countless times that she was faced adversity and still achieved success. My third example is Earl Simmons (DMX) from the book “E.A.R.L”. He went through a tough time at almost all time growing up and he never gave up and achieved success. Perseverance creates success; therefore, when you stick through something you can accomplish what you want.
Perseverance is crucial if you want to make to make something out of life. We all have difficulties that we need to overcome in our life and perseverance is the key to success with no regrets. My neighbour had a dream to start her own restaurant but she had no money, support or job. But instead of moping around she decided to put everything she had into opening a restaurant and eventually after all her hard work and persisting paid off and she made her dream into a reality. My neighbour didn’t just wait for someone to help her out but she made the tough call to take matters into her own hands and persist to achieve her dream. And as Sun Yat-sen, “The key to success is action, and the essential in action is
Perseverance is the only thing that will truly keep the world alive. If humans had given up instead of persevering America would not exist, tyranny would reign and slavery would still exist. Several characters throughout literary history, such as Odysseus from Homers’ Odyssey, and Louis Zamperini in Unbroken are the prime examples of perseverance, and they did it through personal strength and determination to not be broken. After all, it is better to persevere and live a hellish life than to relinquish that life in order to live more comfortably in the hands of those who seek to degrade the soul.
One example, is when Mattie wanted to give Nell away to the orphanage because it would be easier, she persevered and decided it would be better for Nell if Mattie kept her. This shows, that sometimes it might be harder to persevere, but its better in the long run. Another reason, is when Mattie was at the coffeehouse with Grandpa and they got robbed, she thought about just sitting there and letting them take all of their stuff, but she persevered and chases them away. This proves, that when you persevere you will get rewards, which in Mattie’s case was not getting robbed. As you can see, persevering is better, even though giving up is
Perseverance is vital to reaching the American Dream. Giving up has never gotten anyone anywhere, has gotten nothing accomplished. Those who truly seek their American dream, work relentlessly to achieve it. Despair will commonly appear to wear one down and should be overcome to fulfill ones dream. Life will throw obstacles, set hurdles, and give challenges that one must overcome in order to achieve the American Dream or any dream in general. For instance, in “Veterans Day: Never Forget Their Duty” by John McCain, there is a man who exemplifies true perseverance in becoming a patriot, his American Dream. During the vietnam war, Mike Christian was held as a prisoner of war along with McCain. “ the Vietnamese searched our cell and discovered Mike's shirt with the flag…[they] beat Mike Christian severely for the next couple of hours... Sitting there, beneath that dim light bulb, with a piece of white cloth, a piece of red cloth, another shirt and his bamboo needle, was my friend, Mike Christian.” In the end Mike Christian showed resilience and fought on to act like a true patriot, his American dream. If mike did not have perseverance and resilience, he would have never felt his dream become a reality. Christian’s perseverance allowed him to ignore the beating and keep on. This might be an extreme example of perseverance, but it goes to show how much it could accomplish.
The tenet perseverance applies to my own life out of taekwondo and my taekwondo journey to get my black belt in multiple ways. This tenet helps me in my life and in my journey by helping me to never give up and reach higher goals in life.
Hope is one of the many traits that all people have in order to continue with life. It's that person having faith that they will get what they want, and even if that means they have to suffer in order to do so, they will do it because they have that hope, that perseverance of faith (Tyrell, 2014). Louie had a hope all throughout the story, he was the one at the Japanese execution camp that had a hope that he would not be executed and he would get to return home to his family (Dalrymple, 2011). Without that hope Louie wouldn’t have made it through the execution camps, without that hope he would have given up when his plane crashed and the sharks began to attack. The quote used previously to describe perseverance can also be used to describe the hope perseverance holds. After all, throughout all the pain everyone has to hold onto that hope in order to return to that glorious lifestyle they want (Dalrymple, 2011). Louie did exactly that and that is why he returned home and led a content lifestyle after the war. That is why he goes around to schools preaching about the benefits and true meaning of perseverance. Without it, failure is
What is perseverance? Perseverance is steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. Gary Paulsen showed perseverance by running away from home at the age of fourteen and traveling with a carnival, Paulsen acquired a taste for adventure. Paulsen wrote two books and one movie which showed perseverance.
What is the definition of perseverance? Well, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, perseverance is “steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success”. The quirky, ambitious Junior and the creative, enthusiastic Randy Pausch both display immense amounts of perseverance. Junior demonstrates this by attending Reardan High School to prove that he is still alive and reaching for his goals. Randy Pausch displays his perseverance through his brick walls; the obstacles in one’s life and how they show how bad one desires something. The two individuals are enduring through the challenges in their lives, and eventually are able to overcome them.
As a child, we watch many Disney movies and read about different stories. However, many, if not all of us have, at some point, watched or read the story of Cinderella. It’s a story of a young girl who is thrown into adversity, but perseveres through these challenges with a positive outlook and the assistance of some “magical” entity, and lives “happily ever after.” There have been many deviations of Cinderella in order to diversify the story and make it applicable to all of the today’s youth. Despite the differences in character names or story titles, the original theme of perseverance is maintained throughout the numerous tales.
Perseverance is an important asset to be successful academically. My mother was diagnosed with stage four multiple myeloma in college. One fall night, my mother fell unconsciously onto the couch. I called the ambulance quickly and they arrived at the scene. She was rushed by helicopter, to the Charlotte hospital for cardiac emergency treatment. At that moment, all I could do was close my eyes and look up at the ceiling of the helicopter and pray; I never prayed so passionately and helplessly. It was confirmed by doctors, that she had a fifteen percent, left ventricular ejection fracture; I knew at that moment that my life would take a huge
