For the first ten years of my life, I had a very normal childhood. I went to a private catholic school in a small town called Westwego. We were about twenty five minutes south of New Orleans. During the summers, friends and family would come over to our house and we would all swim and boil seafood. The summer of 2005 was no different; I was looking forward to entering 5th grade. Fast forward to one week before school is about to start when Hurricane Katrina formed in the Atlantic Ocean. Hurricanes were no strangers to us as we have been through several throughout the years. I really had no idea what I was getting into at the time. The club was about to be dropped at Allen due to low numbers. That summer, we started to recruit friends to come out and just try it. We would run concessions for other Allen sports programs to raise awareness and help bring in funds for the club. Our coach stressed the importance of community work and giving back as it strengthens the club. If you weren’t able to help volunteer, you would have to do some extra running at practice. This made everyone want to help out and it made us bond as a team. One of my favorite things we did for the community was bringing toys to the local Samaritan Inn around Christmas time. They were always so thankful and appreciative of whatever we brought no matter what it was. I’ve been playing rugby for almost seven years now and it has taught me more than I thought it would. Discipline is a must and it transitioned from the field into my everyday life. In rugby, having manners is a requirement. For example, the referee is known as “sir” or “ma’am” and there is no exception to this. My coach always said that rugby is a hooligans sport played by gentlemen. I’m still active with my high school rugby club. I go out there to help run drills or work one on one with a player. I truly enjoy sharing my knowledge to newer players and seeing how they grow as a
