Something strange happens to me whenever I fly into Beirut airport, which I have done several times in the past twenty years. My heart beats faster and I get butterflies in my stomach. I begin to recall Lebanon’s history and the horrific events that took place. Lebanon, a country that has suffered from civil wars as well as invasional wars, continues to overcome and recover from all the past scars left behind. One particular war in which Beirut and several other cities were affected is the 1982 war with Israel, also known as Operation Peace for Galilee. This war has been of interest to me since I was young because my mother would not stop talking about it every now and then. She describes her startled feelings as a young girl experiencing a violent and disastrous war.

In what year did the war occur and what caused it?
The war as I remember started in 1982 early summer, the exact cause I do not know but the reason from what I heard was to drive the armed palestinians away from Beirut and the Southern part of the country towards the North.
How old were you?
I was 15 years old.
What was it like living in lebanon during the war?
It was unlike what we have experienced during our civil war that started in 1975. During the 1982 invasion, bombs fell from above; from the planes in the sky. There was nowhere to hide. Complete buildings collapsed in seconds. It was extremely scary. I used to dread the sounds of the planes flying above because that indicated that a bomb or or more will be dropped.
Did you encounter any intruders?
No but we would see from our windows and balconies some Lebanese forces accompanied by Israelis defence army (IDA) entering buildings in search for hidden weapons.
Were the IDA only in search for hidden weapons?
Hidden weapons or any members of the Palestinian Liberation Army hiding in buildings.
Did you have to evacuate from your
My hands were covered in blood.. It was only a matter of time till they caught me.. I could hear the roaring of the wind. The heavy breathing coming from my own chest.. My stomach ached in pain. I could feel the tears beginning to escape from my eyes...
One day in 7th grade at 6th block it was almost time for Eogs to begin actually they were the following monday and i was talking to natalie.Mr.Clark was talking about something that really bored me ,so talking to natalie was pretty much my only option.I really should of payed attention but you know it was almost the end of the year and no one really payed attention. He wanted us to take notes so i pulled out a bunch of paper.Everybody kept asking me for paper so i got very annoyed.
As I rose from bed, I could hear my wife starting to make breakfast. Today was going to be quite a day, mainly due to a fast coming winter and the need to harvest the squash and corn was increasing each day. I proceeded to change into my work attire and brown maroon felt hat I had bought myself last week. I walked out of my room and went into the main room where I had my breakfast every morning. I walked over to the table and sat in a hand carved chair made by the finest carpenter in Saybrook where my porridge awaited me. After sitting down at the table with my two sons and wife, I blessed our porridge and had my younger son read a Bible verse. Reading the Bible is a crucial part of being a Puritan since if one could not read the Bible they
As I drove downtown to visit Carol and Lee, I looked for a back way back in which would mean that I wouldn’t be seen. I wandered around for a while, eventually finding their house situated a few hundred yards from a McDonald on Bragg Boulevard and saw an alleyway behind the restaurant. I went to McDonald, where I waited a while before exiting into the back alley to see if I was followed. When I was convinced that it was all clear, I leaped over the fence into Carol’s backyard and up to the door.
We narrowly made it out of the airport. Hank almost got taken down because he got distracted. These infrasound weapons were devastating, but had a major drawback, one that almost cost my best friend his life.
It was the day before it all happened, everyone knew that people were coming to fight and take all the men, in the refugee to go fight against us, we didn’t know what to do with my father. Once my father came back home we were so sad because we didn’t want our dad to leave us, so we were planning to hide my father, Aunt Betsy was telling us kids to go in the room because, my parents had to talk. So me (Sally) and my little 5 year old brother. My little brother (Michael) all he talked about was being a warrior which I didn’t like because, we were going to be a in a war, but I didn't mind because I knew he was little and really didn’t know what he wanted to be.
Upon arriving to theater, the news spread out quick that one of our engineer platoons was hit
I wish that there was a cure for the war, and I wish that time could freeze and no more innocent people could be suffering or put in anymore graveyards.
I could feel the warmth from the sun hugging my skin, I took a sip of my cold drink as the ice touched my lips. My feet were deep in the sand as i heard the waves crash on the beach. I realized that this was the first time that i had been alone with peace and quietness. We were scheduled to move out in two days. I never thought that the war would be so vicious and painful. Back in New York all they said was that you would be back in two months crowned a hero. This was my second year deployed, my platoon was deep into Vietcong territory. We had fought through jungles, rice paddies and quicksand. Most of us hated everything about this god forsaken country. Before two years ago I had never heard of Vietnam, most of us wouldn't have been able to
I was awoken with a thunderous bang that made the ground tremble and the house shake. Things were falling off shelves, crashing and shattering onto the floor. I dived under a table until the shaking stopped. Slowly and carefully, I peeked out the window and watched as the soldiers broke their way into each and every house, gathering up everyone who didn't go to the Commemoration Day Show. I ran for my hunting gun and considered my options, run or fight. I decided to run and strap my gun across my back but quickly realised I was surrounded. I formulated a plan as I rushed up the stairs to my brother's bedroom. As I reached his room, my front door was burst open and the soldiers' carefully entered my house. I locked the door behind me and for
Eighteen-year-old George Horton wakes up like every other day that school year to the iterative alarm clock going off at 6 a.m. He walks to the bathroom and looks at himself in the mirror saying, "This is the last school. This is my last year then I'm free. Only two more months in this hell hole". He goes on to wash his dark Hershey-like skin, and heads to school. George is a senior at his third high school after being kicked out for fights, drugs, and just about anything that would label a student as a "bad apple". He enters his first block class half asleep from being up all night. Mr. Bruckmann acknowledges George as he raises his hand and asks "May I use the restroom?"
Christmas arrived during my first week home after my discharge from the army. I had been stateside six months, and when I woke up, I felt like I lost my marbles. I mean I wondered if I was an addict, an alcoholic, or insane.
On July 12, 2006 Hezbollah launched an elaborate cross-border raid. In the first stage of the raid Hezbollah launched Katyusha rockets on Israeli positions in villages such as Zar’it. Five civilians were wounded. While Israel was distracted a group of Hezbollah fighters crossed the border and coordinated an attack on two Israeli Humvees with a group of Hezbollah fighters near the border in south Lebanon. After killing all the soldiers in one of the Humvees Hezbollah managed to disable the other Humvee and capture two Israeli soldiers and transport them to Lebanon. The point of this capture was to negotiate a prisoner exchange, but what Hezbollah received in return was a war. On top of the two captured three Israeli soldiers were killed. Five more Israeli soldiers would be killed later in a failed rescue attempt.
Moreover, the Zionist success during the Lebanon War in defending the state of Israel was the result of the Zionists themselves. The Israelis invaded Lebanon in June 1982 in order to destroy the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO), who were launching regular attacks on Northern Israel from Lebanon. The Israelis encountered fierce resistance but by August 1982, the PLO leaders retreated to Tunisia. Despite being under continuous attacks from the PLO from Israel’s neighbouring countries, the Zionists successfully defended the state of Israel during the Lebanon War.
1982 Lebanon War - Began on 6 June 1982, when the Israel Defense Forces invaded southern Lebanon to expel the PLO from the territory. The Government of Israel ordered the invasion as a response to the assassination attempt against Israel's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Shlomo Argov, by the Abu Nidal Organization and due to the constant terror attacks on northern Israel made by the Palestinian guerilla organizations which resided in Lebanon. The war resulted in the expulsion of the PLO from Lebanon and created an Israeli Security Zone in southern Lebanon.
