Personal Narrative: My Migration To The United States

I am a Nigerian immigrant and I lived in Nigeria until I was seven. There are numerous differences between Nigeria, a non-western undeveloped nation, and the U.S. For example, very trivial things like constant electricity, clean water, quality education, and access to quality healthcare are often unavailable or extremely expensive in Nigeria. Though retrospectively, I feel like I was deprived as a child, these things were a reality for me at the time. Fortunately for me, my parents were able to move our family to the United States, more specifically New Jersey, to give my sibling and I better opportunities, and this transition was a very happy time for my family. However, this change was not without hardships. However, some people I interacted with were not so empathetic. In addition, because I was seen as an African immigrant, I experienced some prejudice because of that ascribed status. For example, sometimes when I was talking to someone, they would assume that I was unintelligible because of my accent. Other times, upon discovering that I was from Nigeria, people assumed that I lived in a village, and lived with wild animals. In Nigeria, I lived in Lagos a huge metropolitan city that was at the time the capital of the nation. I had never seen any giraffes or elephants, but because of the stereotype of Africans portrayed in the media, people were quick to judge my past
