Personal Narrative: My Time In High School

Going through high school the days were all the same, except for game days. There was just something different about the culture of the school. You could almost feel the excitement in the air. Every “Good luck tonight,” that was received made it feel like the whole school was rooting for me. This was my senior year and tonight was an especially big game. The game that night would decide if we made playoffs and if I could step on the court as a Hawk again.

Back within seventh grade towards the start of the school year I was put into a course called "Advanced Art" and I sat with a friend. My friend, Javier, wasn't suppose to have the class so he was sure to leave within weeks. During the time with him I noticed this big group of friends that seemed quite interesting to me. Around the time when he had his classes changed the song "Wrecking Ball" by Miley Cyrus came along and I drew a funny picture about it. I introduced myself into the big group and at first they seemed off about me but then they accepted me, especially this one girl named Tiffany. We had a few classes together so we would sit together and this was a start of a story of best friends.

Continue my story. After my junior high school to continue learning to a higher level that is high school, I also know many more friends, although the majority of women, but I really liked high school. Being a freshman is the hardest of your four years in high school. Have you ever been pressured to be the best person you can be? This is how my year was as a freshman. Freshman year was the most different I never thought I would of found my way around the school when I first started to go there. Freshman year was the best year throughout my years of high school and it was the only year I had friends. During this year I had a lot of anxieties which dealt with me thinking I’m gonna be alone and not have any friends throughout the year to support me through the whole thing. Also, I would think of the pressure of not doing good in any of my classes so I would think it would affect my GPA in the future. The transition from middle school to high school was a different type of thing to do.

Throughout my four years of high school i have experienced many challenges that either set my down or brought me up. As a young adult, i feel like there is so much more to learn ahead of me, other than, learning how to solve a math problem or the history behind many of our countries treasuries. Since I started high school in 2012 I have taken as many academically different classes as I could with the highest possible rigor to not only push myself, but to expand my interests for my college career. As I come to the end of my high school career I realize I have a wide range of academic interests. If I was to choose an area of focus today one of my main interests would be children’s mental and physical disabilities. While some might find it difficult to work with down syndrome, autistic, or physically handicapped individuals, I find it rewarding and enjoyable. Completing my high school education has come with an array of struggles and challenges stemming from different sources and having varying degrees of difficulty. One of the major struggles I experienced in starting my high school experience was finding a place and a voice for myself among a large group of people who predominately didn't look or sound like me. Taking higher level classes, I often found myself being the only person of color in that class. One thing that has been meaningful to me is my experience with high school athletics. I choose high school athletics because of a few reasons. My first reason is how I learned about hard work and if you push yourself, you can achieve your goal. I have been lifting weights three days a week since I was in 8th grade. Up until the summer before my junior year I hadn’t tried very much while I lifted weights. I would rush to finish my workout, sometimes I would even skip lifting. I had wasted my time for three years. I realized that I had to change my work ethic. The summer before my junior year is when I started to push myself. LGBT Americans make up anywhere from one percent, or three million people, to five percent, or 16 million people, of the American population. Each of these individuals has had his/her own unique journey through life. Sometimes this aspect of their identity can define their life; it can especially shape their life in terms of what they experience. For instance, LGBT teens are three times more likely to be bullied, 90 percent have been harassed at school, and more than 33 percent will attempt suicide, which is four times more than our straight counterparts. The journey through high school can be tough for LGBT students, but it can be just as enlightening, just like it has been for me.

Throughout my high school career, I've learned various things that will help shape my future. Whether it's my experiences in athletics, extracurricular activities, or even my social interactions during the school day itself. High school was a place where I learned endless life lessons that have shaped me into who I am today. Most people view high school as a place that they are forced to spend four years of their lives, I conceive it as a place to grow in friendships and expand my knowledge of the world.

High school in its self is an experience. There are many activities and opportunities to take part in. I have been provided the opportunity to have experience many of these during the course of my high school career. The one that stands out to me as most satisfying was when the girls volleyball team went to state. However, I am not a member of the volleyball team; I am a part of the band.

In high school, I was a bad kid. I didnt do drugs or drink beer, but I was bad. School wasnt a priority of mine during my junior year, and I failed all of my classes except weight training, ceramics, and jewelry. I lived for the bell at the end of the day. This was the first year that I drove, and I did it a lot. I had an old baby blue Chevrolet pickup that could fly like the wind. I met a lot of people, and gained some good friends.

My event I wanted to focus on the most is when I failed my freshmen year of high school. I didn’t try as much as I should have but I figured that I was going to pull a last minute try and do all my work when the end of the school year came but I was horribly wrong and I had to suffer the consequences of not being in my correct classes and being behind in credits.

Throughout my middle and high school years I have always been involved in many sports and activities, and that is a bit strange for a person that had never been interested in any type of sport and was very very anti-social, from seventh grade down. Athletics and Band where the two major components of my 7-8 middle school years. I was in all regular classes and my grades were not the best, with 70’s and 80’, I always did what I needed to do to get a passing grade. When I was in Band, I have to admit, I was pretty good even though I never really practiced at home, because my French horn was too heavy for a 4.5 feet tall girl to carry two miles home every day. After freshman year, I put the past behind me. Being the positive and optimistic student athlete that I was, little did I know that soccer was not in my future for my sophomore year of high school. I've always adored playing sports, but to be able to represent my school would be outstanding. Getting cut from the middle school soccer team multiple seasons really made an impact in my life. Countless hours of training finally led to the one moment I have always waited for. The coach handed me the small, terrifying paper which for once, was not so terrifying. Markings within the paper signaled that I had made the freshman soccer team, sparking new hope in my future with the sport. Having the most ideal soccer season that I have ever had led me to try out the following season as a sophomore.
