Personal Narrative: My Trip To Colorado

Every year the cross-country team has a trip up to Colorado for team building and altitude training. I have gone on these trips with my team every year and the time I spent with my team in Colorado makes up a large portion of my best memories of high school. The trip is mean to be an amalgam of challenges and fun experiences, and I feel like I can fully enjoy the entertaining parts of the trip because I know that I have also worked hard the remainder of the time. Driving in a van for hours to get to Colorado can get boring, but we usually find some way to make it fun with music and games that the team brings along. I have a deep love for space so star gazing in that valley is a great experience for me. Unfortunately, we are only in the valley one night before the team has to pile back into our vans and resume our trek to the mountains of Colorado. Once we get there, we start on our daily regimen of running and hiking. The first few runs in the mountains are rough; running at an altitude much higher than home with much less oxygen is a challenge. However, the altitude training pays off when we get home and in a strange way choking on a low oxygen atmosphere with your friends can be a bit of a bonding experience, not particularly comfortable, but bonding nonetheless. The 8 to 16 mile hikes we complete take hours, but we fill the time with chatting and photo taking and more music. There’s also the tradition of seniors choosing “theme days” for the hikes where we all dress up in funny or creative costumes to match a theme. Just imagine a swarm of 60 Disney princesses hiking up a mountain. We always joke that by the time we get to the top, everything tastes delicious because we’re so hungry for lunch. Off-brand Oreos become a 5 star dessert if we’ve been climbing long
