Being from rural Mississippi, people from other states assume that we know very little about what goes on outside our state let alone our own town. In a way, I can see why, but glad I am one of the ones who, thanks to my family, have an idea of a world larger than my town. I am from a family of six consisting of my mother, father, step-mother, brother, and identical twin sister. We did a lot of traveling when growing up normally traveling out of state even if just for weekends. My interest in other cultures and languages came from my family, especially on my mother’s side where I members who traveled out of country for work and would bring us back clothes, books, or other souvenirs. My dad did not do as much traveling as my mom and had not
Moving from the South to the Midwest was a huge change in my life. For my whole life I grew up to the southern hospitality and the tang of salt in the air since the beach was always less than 5 minutes away wherever I lived. Now I moved to a place where they flip you off to say hi, and the closest thing to an ocean is a sea of grass that seems to go on forever. Although I am now adapted to the change for the most part, it took me awhile to break in to the social norms of an average Midwest kids.
Well the week of our trip to Memphis Tennessee had finally arrived ! My colleagues Beverly,
Want to know why I am the way I am? I was born in Mississippi, my home. My family and the people I lived around all come from a southern background. Other Mississippians are like family. When I leave Mississippi I feel like a stranger to everybody I meet. Not everybody is used to “Yes, ma’ams” and “No, sirs” or “Y’alls and “ain’ts” like I am.
Where one grows up affects their lifestyle and character; one’s surroundings shape his or her outlook on the world. Many people always say when growing up in the city one will be used to a diverse, hasty going, and exhilarating life; while growing up in the country one will be used to a deliberate, steadier, and bucolic life. Although moving to Mississippi was a dramatic alteration, I can explicitly acknowledges the menaces–death, robberies, and fights–encountered growing up in the city. Therefore, moving to the south may have been a better alternative involving my physical well-being, regardless of the many emotional struggles. Moving down south to Mississippi from Illinois showed me the struggles of coping with racism and prejudice people,
4,097 people. That was the population of Centralia Missouri in 2011. Moving had never been an issue for me, when your dad is in the military you get used to it. This time it was different than any other time. My parents were divorcing and my mom was forcing me to move to a town with only 4,097 people opposed to my home in Virginia with 225,401 people.
The birds, squirrels, and fishes living in tranquility. The daylight there is an early riser, while the night feels like a mother rocking her baby; peaceful. Therefore, the nights are so still that only the beautiful harmony of the crickets could be heard. The green tree looks so alive, they were standing large and stiff. There was even the opportunity of exploring the mountain trails. It was amazing being able to experience something completely different, especially when it was just a few days from starting my junior year. The memories from that trip will be unforgettable.
I am not from San Antonio. I am not from Texas. I’m from California. Where no one twangs, or drawls, or even says hi to the stranger standing in line at the grocery store. Texas, half way across the U.S and what seems like a whole other country compared to California. It is a completely different place that I could have ever imagined living and calling home. I came to Texas to find myself. I didn’t know that when I came here, but it is what ended up happening.
Sioux County Iowa isn’t so different from any other rural county in the Midwest. We have rich and poor towns, public and private schools, good and bad police officers, and plenty of rowdy teenagers. The Midwest however is a very unique place to live. I lived in the country, about ten minutes outside of Orange City, Iowa. One summer Wednesday night at about 9:00p.m., after I had just gotten back home from work, I received a text message from my friend Jon, “Get the truck ready. Be at your house in 10”. I sighed. I knew that meant we were up to no good. I’m not sure what really bothered me, the fact that Jon was expecting me to drop all of my plans to go on another escapade, or the fact that we both knew I didn’t have any plans.
It had been raining intermittently for the past four days and by late Saturday afternoon, another storm was approaching the rural southern town of Wrongberight. Clemmy Sue Jarvis since birth has lived in the town and had a simple philosophy concerning weather. As long as she was six feet above ground instead of six feet below, she did not care what it was. Today as she lifts her petite frame into her rusty Ford pickup, she is preoccupied with what she hopes to accomplish this evening. Absorbed in though she pulls out of her driveway and heads south on Flat Bottom Road along the edge the Dismal Swamp towards the isolated home of her dearest friend Estelle
I attended William B. Murrah Highschool for my freshman and sophmore year; however, I auditioned to attend the Mississippi School of the Arts for my junior and senior year. Once I'd auditioned, I was informed I was accepted which was why I left to attend the Mississippi School of the Arts. While I atteneded Mississippi School of the Arts, for my junior year I took a class at Brookhaven
Billy Bob was a simple hillbilly, who lived on a ranch in the Middle of Kansas. He had 20 pigs 69 cows and 2 horses. Billy had a girlfriend named Jolene, who had a pet chicken named Fabio. And she loved that thing more than Billy. Billy hated that. Billy was also suspicious of Fabio and thought he is up to no good. But Jolene thought that Billy was being ridiculous.
I never really understood the American Farming still this last summer. Most of my time in American was spent traveling City to city: from DC to California. One of the things I found out was that food is there it does not matter if it in season or not, food is there in the Walmart and Kroger twenty-four seven. I asked myself how big are this farms. Thought-out my traveling all I saw on the side of the road was corn and soybeans .insed of me I feel like if I had time to travel to the rural I could see all these farms that grow this beautifully tomato and plan radishes, a route, apples and all thing I in the Kroger.
I am from a small town in Western Kentucky. It’s a nice town, where most of the people are friendly, and generally know who you are. At the start of last summer I really started thinking about where I wanted to go to college. Most of my friends were staying close to home, attending small colleges, that don’t offer many opportunities for the future. I seriously considered sticking with them and just choosing the "easy" way. Then I started thinking about what I wanted to do with my life. I don’t really want to stay around the region I live in now, there's not anything wrong with it, it's just not for me.
I met him once or twice again over the years, but our initial conversation never came up again. He and his wife passed away a few years ago after a good and long life. I was saddened as they were part of that strong farm family culture which has made Weld County such a great place to live and work. To make a long story short, it seems that he left instructions with my business card for his children to contact LGE regarding the disposition of the farm, stating that LGE was a good company with people whom they could trust. The ultimate success of this and other projects will depend on the ongoing trust, goodwill, and cooperation of a number of third party entities in both the private and public sectors as well as the competitive services we
