It is a game of inches played nearly everywhere by every age. From backyards to little league parks and professional stadiums, by tee-ball playing kindergartners to old-timer leagues, baseball is a game that is considered America’s pastime for a good reason. Baseball, and simply sports in general, help teach many important life lessons such as hard work, sportsmanship and dedication. These qualities, along with many other things, are necessary for success in today’s world. The sport of baseball is very popular in other countries as well, and for many of the youth in these countries, it represents a way out. A way out from the poverty and crime and a way to a better life here in America. Out of all of the opportunities afforded to me …show more content…
Score International is a sports mission ministry that allows groups to travel around the world and volunteer in different capacities such as medical, spiritual, and through different sporting events including baseball. Score International is already helping to organize the University of Louisville baseball team’s trip to the Dominican republic this fall and already has a great relationship with Coach McDonnell. I have a lot of experience with this type of community service as well. I am a volunteer coach for a girls youth basketball team and help with both practices and games. During my sophomore year in high school, I traveled to the third world country of Guatemala for a Spanish class trip. One of the main reasons that I went on this trip was because of the volunteer opportunities. Our group went to a elementary school that was very poor. They had almost no school supplies or sporting equipment and the school was very overcrowded. Our volunteering consisted of donating school supplies to help them with their education and also playing sports and exercising with them. Many of the kids that would be participants in the baseball camp would be around the same age as these kids were and I have a lot of
I have loved baseball for years, but by the time I was a freshman at Laurel High School, I had precious little experience. The chances of me playing baseball in most high schools were slim, but this was Laurel. America’s favorite pastime was treated there as a vestige of years long forgotten. The athletic director ignored us, the students didn’t support us, and the school funded us just enough to say that they had a baseball program. Tucked away in a forgotten corner of the campus in the gloomy shadows of the tower from which football games were announced, the baseball diamond was the school’s disgrace. The dugouts were dismal cinder block bunkers with peeling paint and a propensity to flood. Grass was scarce where it was supposed to be and
Baseball has been label as America’s pastime since before the civil war, and Opening Day kicks off the season. This is the beginning of a new season and the opportunity to accomplish your goals; this symbolizes the American dream, and the every changing society in America. Throughout this essay we’ll discuss four images that illustrate how baseball is shaped by American culture.
We all have specific talents that make us, humans, who we are. My talent is also my idol. If I did not have this piece of my life, then I feel like it could very well make my college application incomplete. I hope to be a successful prospect of my specific interest. Playing baseball is what I do.
Going…going…gone! As one of America’s greatest pastimes, baseball brings fans from around the world to support their players in competitive games against opposing teams. Known as the “Great American Game,” baseball has transformed history and influenced American culture for many years. Famous professional players, including Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Pete Rose, and countless others have impacted America in matters beyond the baseball field. Robinson, for example, shattered the racial barrier when he became the first African American to play on a professional sports team. Baseball is more than just a game, and it is a lifestyle that has defined my path after high school and molded my character.
Imagine you going up to the plate and hitting a base hit to score the winning run in the last inning. I will be talking to you about baseball, Americans favorite pastime. When I first played the game of baseball, I thought that baseball was so boring but when I got older, it got very interesting. The connection I can make is that baseball is America’s past time and has deep traditional values in many of us like me. Abner Doubleday, a young man from New York City invented the game of baseball in the summer of 1839. It became America’s beloved national pastime. Baseball is America’s favorite pastime because everyone
Major League baseball players have an impact on the youth of today. They are role models, both good and bad, for young people who look up to them and want to be just like them. In the articles reviewed, there are examples of how baseball players have inspired people, showed and received respect for their actions, put their team before themselves, gave back through charities, and made mistakes but overcame them.
In today’s society, there are many ways in which people communicate within their individual community. One community in which many people do not fully understand is the game of baseball. Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the U.S. and has been deemed America’s pastime. For me, sports are my life, especially when it comes to this particular game. I started playing baseball around the age of 4 and continue to play here at the university for the UC Club Baseball Team.
Inner city baseball teams, promote a positive environment for children and young adults to help prevent and reduce the rise in city crime rate. In many eyes, the people of America value baseball as the number one sport nationwide. Many Americans live for the crack of a bat when it makes contact with the ball, or for the thrill of predicting on where the balls going to land or if the team player is going to catch the “pop fly”. Baseball is a sport played by some and watched by millions. Baseball is a sport that requires nothing less than high quality team work, hand eye coordination, and chomping on a stick of “big chew gum”. It’s every minor baseball players dream to make it into the major leagues, and to hit a home run or a grand
The sport is such an integral part of our culture today that we Americans sometimes take for granted its significance in our everyday lives. Contemporary baseball is so closely related with American ideals and identity that it often has served as an expression of patriotism. In times of national hardships, baseball has been used to encourage and rally the nation. In speaking of the emergence of America's nationalism in the historic and contemporary playing field, there are several key issues that surface. Of these issues I will specifically address the long residuals of how baseball has helped to establish our (Americans) national spirit and identity. That is the links between our heritage and national institutions and the game of baseball as a cultural and political representative abroad and unifying tradition at home. I will also address ideals and injustices. That is how baseball's acceptability has changed over time, and how this acts as a microcosm for America's changing attitudes about equality and opportunity.
While the game of baseball has provided regional coherence between the U.S. and the Dominican, it has resulted in a systematic destruction of Dominican ideals across all of the nation’s demographics. As recent as last week, a wire report published in Dominican Today titled “Amid eternal woes, Dominicans turn to baseball” states “Amid rising crime, rampant corruption, shaky institutionalism and overall exasperation, Dominicans sigh in relief starting tonight
During my childhood years baseball served as a hobby that kept me active and healthy. I would constantly be watching the Anaheim Angels, playing a game of wiffleball, or hitting in the batting cages. This was a game that allowed me to have fun, develop relationships, and stay active. I developed a
Baseball to the vast majority sounds like that one Sport where whatever you do is lounge around and hold up to hear the break of the bat. That’s not what the sport of baseball genuinely is. But to me, this sport has transmuted the way I see life all in all. Each and every athlete on the team has been illuminated to have extraordinary dedicated demeanor, regardless if it's in a training room or pregame warmups. Mentors have disposed initiative chances to teammates year after year and this this season it's my turn in light of my strong efforts and sturdy and my competency to be on the team. I did not turn into the individual that I am by lounging around. If it wasnt for baseball,
As many of you know, baseball is considered America’s pastime. It is also widely known as one of the most played sports in the world, with many different leagues that include the Chinese baseball league, Little League World Series, and the MLB. There are players from all different countries that come to play baseball in the United States, including the Dominican Republic, China, and Japan among others. 241 out of the 856 players on a Major League roster are foreign born players. In this speech I would like to inform you on the history of baseball and the changes that have been made since the start of this iconic sport.
Baseball represents some of what is best about America, in ways that other parts of our culture do not. It is for all people, who are wearing their baseball gloves, eagerly awaiting a foul ball. Baseball teams are now the most integrated in sports, made up of players who are Latino, Black, White, and Asian. With that said, I plan to contribute to the community life and activities by enjoying and learning about every culture, contribute to its stability and growth, and treat everybody the same, irrespective of language, color or belief as an equal. I have learned honesty, integrity, and all its meanings. These qualities
As I gaze up into the pitch black sky looking for the distant stars, I get this itching feeling at the bottom of my shoulder blade watching my arm move upwards as if it is trying to grab something. Then my hand unravels slowly from its prehistoric fist-like position to balance an object of unquantifiable size. Reaching for the stars was the only thing on my mind to then feel a glimmer of heat sparkling on my hand.
