Since leaving College, I have expressed a desire to work with in the field of Health and Social Care. Providing a holistic and substantial support for each individual who require specialist services. My work background and educational studies in the Health and Social Care area have confirmed this desire, however what I have found in my studies prior to this have allowed me to get an insight and in turn have allowed me to develope a greater understanding of any challenging issues that may occur and the impact they may have. Occupational Therapy however ultimately stands out for me, and most importantly I have the desire and passion for this specialist service due to this I follow BAOT (British Association of Occupational Therapists) for updates
These relationships have helped me to embrace cultural norms, routines and rituals. Personal Context defines me as a middle class individual working hard to get my masters of occupational therapy degree in two and half years from Barry University. Significant part of my daily life revolves around atmosphere in which communication is conducted via virtual medium; computers, cell phone. Process Intervention process of Occupational Therapy contains evaluation, intervention, and outcome. However, occupation therapy focuses on occupation throughout the process, thereby making it unique. To make the process clearer and easy to understand, a visual illustration is enclosed labeled, (Figure 2). Occupational profile is an initial phase in my evaluation process, involving my occupational history, patterns of daily living, interests, etc. which are explained above. My motive for pursuing corrections in occupational disruptions is due to my full time work and school related obligations. Now with my busy schedule I have to hire a caregiver and modify my house for my aunt. Effective time management is also my top priority because of my educational
The profession of occupational therapy is holistic, in which the professional can practice in with diverse populations in a variation of settings. The goal of an occupational therapist is to promote, enable, and encourage clients to fulfill occupations independently, such as planning and preparing a meal and balance checkbooks along with properly using a credit card. Since the origination of this career is in mental health, professionals have an imperative role in working with clients with severe mental illness to function daily and increase independence in fulfilling occupations that are meaningful to them.
The goals of Occupational therapy are promoting physical, mental health and well-being of individuals with disability (ref). Occupational therapists have a strong supporting role in the mental health sector, by using daily activities to help individual mental disabilities transition from institution to community living ( Burson, Fette, Orentlicher, Precin, Roush & Kannenberg, 2017). However, as medical model became the primary focus in healthcare, Occupational therapists had turn away working in the mental health sectors (ref). With the increase need of mental health care providers, the AOTA has been advocating Occupational Therapists to return to the root of psychiatry (Ikiugu, Nissen, Bellar, Maassen, & Peursem, 2017). Recommending future
I am fascinated by the “tool”, consequently ponder upon keeping ones “tool” in check. Resembling my practice focus on mainly treating the body. Through occupational therapy I hope to practice my ideas on dualism and aid my clients in keeping their bodies healthy. Additionally, help combat other bodily complications in which will affect their mind and soul in a negative way.
When I worked as an occupational therapist in Asan Medical Center, one client said to me. “Therapist Lee, I feel depressed when I think of myself after discharging from this hospital. I already know that my new life which I should face with would be totally different than before. But I don’t know how to participate in my newly-defined life. It is just like a walking the road without any light.” After I heard his story, it reminded me about my original desire which I wanted to commit myself. Moreover, this event make me come back to academic courses and pursue my goal as an occupational therapy(OT) researcher.
By being admitted to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center’s master’s of occupational therapy program would mean I am one step closer to my dream. Being born with mild cerebral palsy, and having to go through many different occupational therapists as a child, I truly just want to become like the people that have inspired me most and changed my life for the better. I know I can achieve this by receiving only the quality education that Texas Tech can give. TTUHSU will help me reach my goals by allowing me to acquire the knowledge and skills that OT’s have, and also give me a chance to have hands-on experience before I get to go out and practice in the real world. By going to an institution that really prides themselves in striving their
The normality of movement is often taken for granted, but without motor control I cannot be capable of effortlessly blending the pigments in a chalk pastel piece, fingering a tune on the piano, stitching together a stuffed animal, waltzing the box step, or giving my pets a belly rub. In the future, being an occupational therapist will allow me to help others rebuild their version of a well-rounded life so they can partake in activities that they find meaningful.
To me, becoming an occupational therapist means combining my love for people, my passions, and my creativity. I have always desired to have a career that would benefit other people, but also be fun and creative for myself. Consequently, when I found out about occupational therapy, it felt like the perfect fusion of everything I was looking for. My preferred form of occupational therapy is pediatric. I have always loved working with children and I knew from early on I wanted to work with them for a living. Their purity and untainted love for life and for the little things give my own life so much joy and added appreciation. This job will not only allow me to be creative, it will encourage further mental and emotional growth for not only my patients
My academic plan is to earn a bachelor’s degree in Human Biology and then go into the Pre-occupational Therapy professional program to earn my master’s degree. I want to become a pediatric occupational therapist so that I can accomplish my two main career goals which are to work with children and have a positive impact on their lives. I would also like to major or minor in Spanish. I have taken Spanish classes since the seventh grade and truly love the language. I want to continue to pursue Spanish and eventually become fluent in the language so I can help even more people. I feel that my interest in the Spanish language and culture has directly influenced my love of traveling. I would really enjoy studying abroad when I get to college. I
Upon earning my master’s degree and licensure in occupational therapy, I want to work with the geriatric population. Prior to starting the occupational therapy school, I served the geriatric population as a certified nursing assistant for six years and my experience working with this population has prompted me to work with the geriatric population. However, as I am aware of the baby boomer population gradually increasing; it is imperative that I acquire the knowledge and skills needed to provide low vision services in order to facilitate independence through training with the use of adaptive devices to complete ADLs and IADLs. Therefore earning a certificate in low vision will be a good asset for me.
I have always been interested in allied health; however, it took me some time to really find which branch was my calling. When I took a class called Medical Aspects of Rehabilitation I realized how much of an impact a disability could have on a person’s life, and how an OT could provide the right therapeutic services to help them improve their quality of life and autonomy. I am in love with occupational therapy because it provides the opportunity to create individual treatment plans, which are based upon the needs and goals of the patient, while thinking outside of the box.
Life has offered me a beautiful journey including a veritable obstacle course, but it is because of these hardships that I have chosen to guarantee my self-actualization and independence. Through the voyage of beginning a new existence as a single mother of two children and discovering ways in which education, rearing, and navigation through life’s challenges, pursuing a career in the field of occupational therapy emerged organically. Understanding each individual is unique and attaining goals can be achieved in infinite ways, uncovering the hidden physical ability despite barriers of illness or disability, my desire to assist patients in viewing their dreams and conquering the invisible obstacles has not only become a love but a passion. Moreover,
My ideal job is to become an occupational therapist and work with patients of all ages in a rehabilitation center. I want to work directly with individuals to help them learn and/or regain the ability to perform daily activities. Occupational therapists evaluate a patient’s current condition/needs and develops a therapeutic treatment plan to help them improve skills needed for everyday living. As an OT, I want to help patients overcome physical, developmental, or emotional impairments by teaching them skills such as fine motor skills, motor control and organization, motor coordination, visual perceptual skills, sensory modulation, and body awareness. I want to work with individuals to help them learn/regain underlying skills as well as address
My short-term goal is to become a licensed and practicing occupational therapist. I want to work with people who need occupational therapy and I want to be creative in devising their treatment plans. My long-term goal, after I have gained plenty of experience, is to treat individuals with sensory processing disorders, perhaps coming up with new protocols or treatment methods. I am also very interested in pediatric feeding disorders. Occupational therapy has helped my cousin maintain a healthy weight by addressing her practical issues with eating. Sensory processing and pediatric feeding disorders are areas of occupational therapy that I would like to explore.
