Illegal Dog Fighting Although dog fighting is a felony offense and illegal in all fifty of the United States, it still exists in society today all across the world. It is merely estimated that there are tens of thousands of people participating in illegal dog fighting today in the United States alone. Many ask why anyone can participate in such a horrible sport, but most participants are in it for the money. “A Closer Look At Dog Fighting” explains just one dog fight alone can be worth up to $20,000-$30,000. Dogfighting is a depressing and horrible series of events that happen in the lives of many animals and animal owners; there should be more serious guidelines and laws put in place to prevent dog fights to protect man’s best friend. …show more content…

The british had more vicious and violent dogs that were better trained and bigger than those that belonged to Rome. This started the market for selling dogs. Romans started to import fighting dogs from Britain to use for both war and entertainment. Large crowds would gather in Rome’s Colosseum to watch dogs fight each other and even other animals. These dogs imported from Britain were crossbred with Roman’s own breed and exported them to France, Spain and other parts of Europe. Many dogs were shipped over to America from England and Ireland. Dog fighting became popular after bull baiting and bear baiting became illegal in the 1830’s (Villavicencio). Years later, the number of professional pits in America increased rapidly from the 1750’s to the 1860’s. Many laws were put in place to try and prevent animal cruelty and dog fights, but sadly, it continued on. Regarding to the article “Dogfighting FAQ”, even after laws were set and made in that time period, dog fighting still continued to grow rapidly into the twentieth century. Dog fighting has been around for several years. Even with all of the laws that are set in place, these horrid fights still remain a problem in the United states.
