Illegal Dog Fighting Although dog fighting is a felony offense and illegal in all fifty of the United States, it still exists in society today all across the world. It is merely estimated that there are tens of thousands of people participating in illegal dog fighting today in the United States alone. Many ask why anyone can participate in such a horrible sport, but most participants are in it for the money. “A Closer Look At Dog Fighting” explains just one dog fight alone can be worth up to $20,000-$30,000. Dogfighting is a depressing and horrible series of events that happen in the lives of many animals and animal owners; there should be more serious guidelines and laws put in place to prevent dog fights to protect man’s best friend. …show more content…
The british had more vicious and violent dogs that were better trained and bigger than those that belonged to Rome. This started the market for selling dogs. Romans started to import fighting dogs from Britain to use for both war and entertainment. Large crowds would gather in Rome’s Colosseum to watch dogs fight each other and even other animals. These dogs imported from Britain were crossbred with Roman’s own breed and exported them to France, Spain and other parts of Europe. Many dogs were shipped over to America from England and Ireland. Dog fighting became popular after bull baiting and bear baiting became illegal in the 1830’s (Villavicencio). Years later, the number of professional pits in America increased rapidly from the 1750’s to the 1860’s. Many laws were put in place to try and prevent animal cruelty and dog fights, but sadly, it continued on. Regarding to the article “Dogfighting FAQ”, even after laws were set and made in that time period, dog fighting still continued to grow rapidly into the twentieth century. Dog fighting has been around for several years. Even with all of the laws that are set in place, these horrid fights still remain a problem in the United states. It is illegal in all fifty states to take participation in dog fighting. As stated by “Detailed Discussion of Dog Fighting,” if caught contributing to these events: possessing, owning, fighting,
1. Regardless of being illegal in all fifty states, dog fighting made a comeback and the pit bull was the dog of choice.
This fight leaves the dogs dripping with blood, in pain, weak, and tired. And that is part of the reason why I agree for it being banned. Yet it also shows that the dogs are sting and fight their own battles. The activities that occurred are common nature for dogs. Such instincts date back to their
It is true, Pit Bulls are more susceptible to becoming a fighting dog due to their build. Owners of these dogs do not care care of their own dog’s well being as shown by the dog’s environment. The animals are often held out in muddy chains twenty four hours a day, starved and beaten by their owners, never receiving any kind of love. Some dogs have their teeth filed for a sharp edge, are injected with harmful steroids, and spend numerous hours racing on a treadmill.(CBC News Windsor) In the ring, it gets even worse. When former orange county prosecutor George Hoovler entered a dog fighting scene, he was taken aback, truly shocked at what he was viewing. "I had been to a number of murder scenes," Hoovler remarks "but I was appalled." (Weir). The fighting pits themselves are typically compact and not sanitary at all due to the brutal brawl that takes place inside them. These dogs are trained to attack each other with aggression and no remorse, ripping jaws and veins a part until one is so nearly dead there can be a declared winner. The loser however if not already dead, is then tortured for their loss and even murdered in petrifying ways. Some may be shot, others could be electrocuted, drowned, and even hanging is a technique used. The fighting dogs do fight for a purpose, they fight to live. Despite the cruel abuse the dogs receive from their past owners, the dogs that live
Dog fighters say to have the best fighting dog in the arena is to get them while they are young. The reason why dog fighters want the dogs as puppies because, it’s to train them so they can learn when they are small but when they are big for example: if you get a pit bull at an old age they would not be able to use that dog because of the fact that they are already old, weak, and there body just can’t move that fast anymore so they would either bait the pit bull or kill it in some kind of way. According to Heger “during the 1800's dogfights were advertised in national magazines” (Heger, 2). As we see today pit bulls really are the main type of dogs that dog fighters would choose and also bloodlines that could either mix with the breed of pit bulls or other blood lines who are stronger and fiercer. However another thing that Heger points out is that the “dogs are frequently injected with steroids of other illegal drugs, beaten, or starved in an effort to increase aggression” (Heger, 4). This
People in the public are lead to believe that Pit Bulls are bred only as fighting dogs and that they are aggressive to other dogs and humans. It is unfortunately true that some Pit Bulls are bred for fighting but, not all are. There is a small percentage overall of Pit Bulls that are used as fighting dogs, mostly Pit Bulls are family dogs. “Some pit bulls were selected and bred for their fighting ability. That means that they may be more likely than other breeds to fight with dogs. It doesn’t mean that they can’t be around other dogs or that they’re unpredictably aggressive. Other pit bulls were specifically bred for work and companionship. These dogs have long been popular family pets, noted for their gentleness, affection and loyalty.” (Position). This states that not all Pit Bulls are threatening and have a desire to fight. I believe that dog fighting is wrong and should be illegal throughout the United States. Dog fighting is a very popular underground form of entertainment.
Pit bulls have been the main choice for dog fights throughout the years and are mostly bred just to keep more pit bulls in the ring, which has been the most inhumane. The puppies are raised in violence which creates vicious dogs for the fights. They have been selected for numerous fights because of their athletic build and ability to keep fighting even if they have broken legs or injured really badly. They have been selected for fights because of their athletic build and ability to keep fighting even if they have broken legs or injured really badly ( ). Any type of criminal likes the look of a mean companion that they could use for their own benefit, thus the pit bulls seemed ideal for any given circumstance. “Dogmen” are breeders that take dogs in for dog fights and their breed of choice as well is its. If a dog is under attack, naturally they are gonna fight their instincts and fight back. Like any living creature a dog has a fight or flight instinct that kicks in when threatened and they go on autopilot to protect themselves or their young as
Pit bulls are descendants from English bulldogges, who were used in the sport of bull baiting, where spectators watched dogs tear apart an enraged bull, and after that sport was banned the owners just moved on to having the dogs fight each other directly.
Today 's pitbull is a descendant of the English bull baiting dog that was selectively bred to bite and hold large animals by their face and head. In the 1800’s, bull baiting was outlawed, so their owners turned to fighting their pit bulls against each other instead. The dogs were purposely not fed by their owners and thrown into a ring to fight for entertainment and
Pitbulls were used on recruitment posters for wars one and two, they were one of America's most popular family dogs. In the 19th century pitbulls were used on farms to help protect and herd cattle, but people used them for other things as well. They used to call it “Bull baiting” or dog fighting. When a dog was being used for bull baiting they were trained to be put into a pit and they would attack bulls that were tied up. Dog fighting is also a common sport that pitbulls have been used for. In dog fighting the dogs are trained in a ring and they go after another dog, people place bets and earn money from it. All of these activities are illegal in most parts of the world today although, some people continue doing it. Pitbulls actually used to be
Pit bulls are put through abuse like innocent people get shot for no reason. The abuse of Pit bulls is so bad little children day after day are attacked because of people who abuse them. Pit bulls tend to be the best fighting dog, because of its strength, high pain tolerance, and desire to please it’s owner. The owners of these dogs happen to abuse, torture, and even use them as bait if they're not good fighters. Examples like they're not strong enough or not aggressive, and especially if they won’t kill the other dog. Dog fighting also happens to be a felony in 43 states in the U.S and a misdemeanor in 7 states. Which makes it illegal in all 50
Dogs simply need to spend time with other dogs as well as, become accustomed to different people. Pit Bulls tend to be sensitive and get their feelings hurt easily, so in essence with the proper care they tend to be very friendly, even with strangers so they don’t make the best guard dog (BadRap). They also have tendencies to excel with bomb detection, and as therapeutic aids because they are highly intelligent along with having tendencies to live playful lives (BadRap). Severe shyness, fearfulness, and directed human aggression is not desirable in any dog (BadRap). Human aggression is something that I firmly believe leads to the dog having an extreme aggressive behavior. Although, people have named these dogs as the face of an aggressive dog “problem”, they are using them for banned actions. Dogfighting has become illegal in all fifty states; Pit Bulls were put into this type of situation by their owners and the media capitalized on it through stereotypical images and myths that dragged the image of the breed down (BadRap). A well-known case of dogfighting would go back to Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels.
Pit bulls are not the only breed that bites. This means that any other breed of dog can potentially bite or act violent. You may have seen the statistics for dog bites but many of those charts are unfair and none of them are accurate. It is not possible to calculate a bite rate for a breed [because] mixed breeds are commonly described as purebreds [and] the actual number of bites that occur in a community is not known if they did not result in serious injury. (American Veterinary Medical Association, 1733) Some dog breeds are more patient that others and every dog has a different personality just like people do. Dogs aren’t able to express their feelings using words so if someone like a child or an adult is bothering them, they can only tolerate so much until they snap at you. Any dog would do this if being pushed too much but pit bulls are at a disadvantage because they are much bigger and built stronger so when they attack
"When baiting large animals was outlawed in the 1800's, people turned instead to fighting their dogs against each other" ("Position Statement..."). A group of immigrants brought dog fighting to the new world and brought their dogs as well. "British immigrants to the U.S. at that time brought dog fighting, as well as their dogs, to the New World" (Bastian). Even though dogs were aggressive towards animals there were still attacks but the owners were at fault so they blamed them for it. For over a hundred years, owners were responsible for any attack which “was enough to prevent attacks" (Bastian). Bans for dog fighting was issued to make sure there was no more aggressiveness toward anyone anymore and it didn't work because it came back in the 1900’s. “Dog fighting came back in the 80’s and the pit bulls were a popular choice to fight with” (Bastian). Ever since dog fighting, shelters have to be careful on who is adopting the dogs and see if they are worthy for them to take the dog in. “Anyone who tries to adopt a pit bull has to be screened” (Knapp). The dog’s aggressiveness is due to dog fighting and they need to resolve this or the situation would get
Dog fighting is a very cruel thing, and it is happening right under our noses. It is illegal to fight a dog in all fifty states. By being an observer at a dog fight, it is against the law in forty-seven states. So why do people continue this cruel practice? The answer seems to be money. Some people who breed dogs for fighting can sell their puppies for up to two thousand dollars. Even though fighting dogs is making money, it is cruel since pain is inflicted on the dogs; the ASPCA and the Humane Society are trying to prevent this with proper training.
Shouldn’t all animals have the right to live? Dogs could receive and give happiness if they were not put down. Animals do not really have a chance to actually live life. Many places simply do not have enough room for all of the animals, so they resort to euthanasia to control the population. There are many dogs and cats that are euthanized only because they take up room.
