Abortion is a legal option for women who decide that a pregnancy is not in their best interest at the moment. For women ages fifteen to forty-four, the states that offer sex education, and in which abortions are more widely accepted, have higher abortion rates than states that do not offer accurate sex education. However, they also have lower teen birth rates ("Rate of Legal Abortions”). The terminated pregnancy avoids the many negative consequences of having a child at a young age. In most states, abortions for minors require parental consent, which makes it difficult for young adults to obtain an abortion because she must consult her parents. Her parents could choose to not give consent thus putting their daughter in a difficult …show more content…
The court is making it more difficult for the teen to have an abortion, which can discourage her and possibly change her mind changing her entire life. Another route a young woman could take if she wishes to terminate the pregnancy is to get a judicial bypass. This allows the woman to “consent to receive medical care without parental consent or notification if the court determines that the minor has the maturity to make independent decisions” (Maradiegue 5). Like the clear and convincing evidence, an adolescent should not need to provide more information to the courts. By going to the courts, she is taking responsibility for not have safe sex and looking out for her future. Unfortunately, the clear and convincing evidence and judicial bypass are not an option in all states. In addition, maturity is subjective so it is hard for the court system to determine the mature level women. If a woman is mature enough to understand the consequences of having a child, thus making the decision to abort, then she should be able to obtain it without her parent’s input. The decision to go to the court to fight her parents is evidence that she is mature enough to make an informed decision without her parents intervening.
It is important for a young adult to be able to make her own decision without her parents consent because if the parents choose to not allow her to take the sex education class, then they are restricting her freedom. If young
Abortion has been one of the biggest controversies of all time. Many people believe it is 100% wrong and even consider it to be murder. The definition of abortion is; “The termination of pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo prior to being capable of normal growth.” These pro-life believers do not support the idea of abortion and believe it should be illegal. Many of these supporters do not know that if abortion were illegal they would still be performed, unfortunately by an uneducated staff. Over 70 thousand maternal deaths occur every year because of unsafe abortions. These women die, so the idea of supporting pro-life is contradictory, this is why the nation should be pro-choice.
Abortion is a very emotional and debatable topic that the general public deals with. It is so debatable because there are so many unanswered questions that surround the subject. When is a baby actually considered to be “born”? Is abortion actually considered to be murder? Should the procedure be legal? At what stage during pregnancy is a fetus considered to be alive? One of the most important questions that relate to the subject is whether or not parents should have the right to consent to whether or not their daughter (who must be a minor) can have an abortion. The two articles, “Parental Consent Laws are Necessary” by Michael New and “Parental Consent Laws Are Unnecessary” by Diana Phillip are identical in topic but also have many distinct differences pertaining to whether or not a parent should consent to the abortion of a minor.
Patel and Bisakha stated in the book, Maternal & Child Health, “…apart from the costs imposed upon taxpayers, teen-mothers themselves exhibit adverse outcomes subsequently in life, including poor educational and economic outcomes” (Patel and Bisakha 1). Millions of taxpayer dollars goes towards federal funding to teenage mothers; most teenage mothers do not have the financial means to take care of a child, resulting in dependence on the government for funding. Without abortions, teen-mothers are forced to drop out of school to raise a child they were not prepared for, resulting in poor education and monetary outcomes. Therefore, abortions become a necessary means, which allows teen girls who are not ready to become parents, a chance at life, before having it snatched away because of a
Laws have been made to decide if a teen has acquired a proper maturity level to bypass the involvement of parents. Adolescents go through with an abortion in order to finish their education and achieve a career.
The legal issues of minors surrounding reproductive rights have been largely debated for decades. While courts have made a variety of decisions regarding these issues, still to this day, citizens debate which rights should and should not be allowed. Regardless of one’s views on abortion, there are a variety of factors to consider and any decision made is not an easy one.
Yet a sober analysis of matter reveals that a developing life in the womb does have a right to be born, but nor does a woman have the right to terminate a pregnancy, because it is wrong. Also while it is true that most states require both parents consent for a minor to have an abortion, some only require one. One website states that “Parental consent and notification laws generally relate to women under the age of 18” (Abortion, 2017) Even though women should not have the right to make the decision without parent consent or the consent of the father. Abortions are still happening. Often times illegally, which causes the rise in unsafe and illegal
The views on abortion are different based on one experiences, beliefs, or own personal opinions. One can express their opinions on how horrible it is to get an abortion because it can be viewed as murder, while another can say that every woman should have a choice because it’s their body that will undergo a pregnancy and not anyone else’s. On the other hand girls that are 17 years old or younger should not be required to obtain parental permission before having an abortion. The girl should be entitled to say what she does with her body without a parent or guardian’s consent. Although minors are physically capable of carrying a baby, the girls in present day society, mainly in the Western culture, do not have the mental capability to understand
There are close to 900 “premature birth centers” in the United States. There are over one million abortions that are performed each year in the United States and over 3000 children lose their life each day. What is even more shocking is that there are over 56 million unborn babies who have lost their lives due to their selfish parents aborting them since the year 1973. It is very heartbreaking to find out the fact that there are so many infants being killed by their own parents. It is very confusing to the fact that why do so many women decide to have abortions? There are almost 64 percent of American women who feels pressured by others to carry out abortions. Another 25 percent of the women are not ready to have a child and timing matters to them. Moreover, some of them cannot afford to support the baby at the time. Most of the women tend to use these reasons to back themselves up for abortion (Weininger, 2014). A lot of the younger women such as teenagers who gets pregnant by accident believes getting an abortion is a fine thing to do. They tend to think that they would disappoint their own family if they kept the baby. Also, they may think it would affect their education that may destroy the rest of their life. However, the moment when the baby is made by its parents, they should have the right to
Everyone has different views on everything and that is why the world is diverse. From politics to cereal everyone has their own favorite and different feelings about each. Abortion is a very popular topic; multiple people disagree on things like abortion and whether it should be legal. Many people today get their news and knowledge on today’s problems from social media and because of this, many ideas and facts are changed or different from what was originally said or done. For example, the percent of abortions for different cases can differ from the source, such as websites or news stations. Based on different beliefs and situations some people believe abortion is alright, but it is not and should be illegal or only accessible in extreme scenarios.
One argument against these involvement laws involves a person’s right to choose the fate of their own body. Of course for a minor this right is limited due to the current laws in this country. But parental involvement laws can be used for the basic purpose of forcing a young woman to continue with an unwanted pregnancy.(Net 1) This and other unacceptable outcomes disproves the reasoning that a parent must be aware of their minor’s abortion, if not in complete control of it. Parental knowledge, just as pregnancy, is a choice to be made by the individual who has the most at stake; the young girl who lives in fear and confusion due to the uncertainty of her parents reactions. Also whether or not these reactions compromise her safety mentally, emotionally, and physically.(Net 1) In the event that parental involvement laws are overturned by all courts, both federal and local, young minor’s can safely make their own choices where pregnancy is concerned. In fact studies show that, with or with out these laws, 61% of minors inform their parents of their abortion before the procedure.(Net 3) In the issue of choice, these laws put undue stress and strain on the young woman who’s future is at stake.
Although abortions have been in existence for many years, each culture has its own distinctive views and interpretations regarding abortions. Since the beginning of time, numerous women all around the world have terminated their pregnancy by having a planned induced abortion. Sometimes the execution of abortion procedures is based on ethical decisions, religious views, and at other times, the decisions are solely based on the individual mothers-to-be culture. The United States, however, has numerous views that are completely different from those in other countries. This essay will review the legislative activity regarding abortions from the past forty-two years to the present, more specifically, it will discuss the recent controversies of minors having induced abortions without parental consent.
However, many studies have shown that when abortions become more available, the abortion rate does not necessarily increase. Currently, teenage girls have twenty-five percent of all abortions, about four hundred thousand per year (Guernsey 7). In 1973, during the Roe v. Wade trial, the Supreme Court granted limited abortion rights to minors. In many states girls were required to have parental consent before the procedure (Harris 20). This created many problems because for a lot of the girls, obtaining permission from their parents was as likely as winning the lottery. This ruling led to illegal abortions, an increase in the teenage birth rate, and it created a severe controversy that is still a cause of debate today. However, for many girls abortion is not even an option. Often abortions go against a girl's religious or personal beliefs, or they do not feel they have the means to pay for an abortion. In these cases, a girl who does not want her baby will give it up for adoption. Although this appears to be a logical choice for a pregnant teen to make, it is one that comes with much suffering and heartache. While teenage mothers are the source of most babies that are adopted, every year out of one-hundred babies they give birth to, less than five are given up for adoption (Guernsey 41). The hardest part for many of the girls is the separation anxiety they feel once their baby has left. While certain adoption agencies offer girls the chance to keep in contact with their
Many parents also believe there should be parental involvement for minors to access parental abortions. The decision to have an abortion is great because it can change the entire course of a young adult’s life. Instead of focusing on a newborn's wants a needs, the young adult can continue her life. However, Linda Lowen, an unbiased freelance writer states, “Those who
Over the years, teenagers have been pushed to partake in adult behavior due to the sexual nature of the American culture, which is exacerbated by social media, television, and movies. In the media safe sex is not portarted. To combat this, sex education is taught in schools with the goal of teaching students accurate information about the sexual anatomy and activity, how to have safe sex, in addition to teaching all of the options teenagers have if they get pregnant without the input of religious or political views. However, some parents opposed sex education because they believe it promotes sexual activity. In reality, young adults will take part in sexual behavior despite their parents wishes; it is sex education that pushes teenagers to take safety precautions. Also, some parent’s religious views lead them to want to protect their child or children from “socially unacceptable” behavior such as having an abortion. Abortions is an option for women if they get pregnant and determine they can not have the child. There is a stigma around abortions that they are morally wrong, which has manifested through politics. It has separated the country into two sides, pro-choice and pro-life. The pro-choice party believes women should have the freedom to choose if they want an abortion. On the other hand, the pro-life party believes life begins at conception, therefore abortion is killing and should not occur. Although abortions are highly controversial, teenagers should be able to
Imagine it is late at night, and you are walking home from a friend's house. It's very dark and you can't really see what's going on until all of a sudden, this random man grabs you and throws you into the back of his car. That same night this man rapes and sexually abuses you. Later on, you find out that you are pregnant by this man and you don't want to keep it, but everyone around you is telling you that you shouldn't get an abortion because you would then be labeled as killing your child. Now you are stuck debating whether or not you want to give birth to a baby that wouldn’t be here if you weren’t raped that night you were walking home from your friend's house. One of the biggest dilemmas in today's time is whether or not teen abortions should be legal. Every year, more than 50% of babies that are conceived, come into the world unwanted (Guttmacher). Whether it is from the mother being raped, abused, not wanting their parents to find out, not wanting everyone to know that they had sex, or even just the thought of the fact that she is a child raising a child. Therefore, all teens should be allowed to have an abortion for many different reasons without being told they are murdering their child.
