The Smoking Gun “I have a very strict gun control policy: If there’s a gun around, I want to be in control of it”(Clint Eastwood).One of the most heated topics in politics today is gun control. In the wake of the Texas Church Massacre, which left 26 people dead and the Vegas Shooting that claimed the lives of 58, there is a push to pass legislation to reduce access to weapons. Both sides of the political spectrum - conservatives and liberals - have held strong to their beliefs. Conservatives reiterate their right to bear arms in case of self-defense and ancestry while liberals argue for the sake of the harm that weapons inflict upon individuals. Yet only after several massacres in the United States does Congress start to compromise on gun control issues. Recently, Ohio Governor John Kasich publicly stated that the people of his state are willing to initiate talks to put restrictions on gun ownership (Felscher). Personally, this is the first I’ve heard of a major Republican politician willing to talk about gun control in a long time. The willingness of a political party to soften on their beliefs is promising, as a solution could be reached in the future. However, there is a lot of work to do in order to end up at that desired outcome. One of the most difficult aspects of gun control is taking a stance on it, as there will always be a disagreement involved. For example, If you decided that guns should be legal for self-defense reasons, there will be a counterclaim stating that guns increase the rate of suicide. After reading about the hardlined stances on the topic, I decided that I could only take a tentative stance on the subject without leaning particularly to one side. One of the oldest arguments for the pro-gun side cites the United States Constitution. According to the Second Amendment, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Republicans believe that the amendment holds true today because they should be able to defend against home invaders, but it is important to keep in mind the era in which the Constitution was written.
