Gun Control is the regulation of the sales and use of all firearms including

handguns, shotguns, and rifles. The United States has 88.2 guns per 100 people which is

the highest per capita and total number in the world. America's gun culture stems directly

from frontier expansion, colonial and revolutionary history, and the Second

Ammendmant which clearly states : "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the

security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be

infringed." Proponents of more gun control state that The Second Ammendment was

intended for militias; that gun restrictions have always existed; and gun violence would

be reduced.Whereas opponents say that The Second Ammendment is what protects

an individual's right to bear arms; that gun ownership is a crime detterent; and that

guns are needed for self defense. Would stricter gun control laws make us any safer?

Gun ownership is an American tradition and gun control laws have been in effect

since the 1700's. A federal law in 1792 required every man who was eligible for the

militia to own a firearm, register that firearm in public record, and to inspect such firearm

frequently. In response to mafia crimes, The National Firearms Act, originally enacted in

1934 imposes a two hundred dollar tax and registration
