Have you ever wondered about the effects that would be brought if school started later? At the moment, school clearly begins too early. This is a problem that is unquestionably bringing negative affects to many students. Many schools throughout the country are addressing this problem by considering school schedule changes including later start times for middle and high schools. Research indicates there are unfavorable effects to current school schedules, as well as well as positive effects to delayed start times. To best meet the needs of teens, school should start later.

The sound of that Buzz at 6:00 in the morning is the cherry on top for any high school teen. Waking up as early as 6:00 and going to sleep past 11:00 is the typical cycle of a high school teen. Going to school all groggy and sleepy is something any teen will agree on. That early morning bell that starts the school so early is taking away from the development of teens. With later school times the students will able to catch up on rest which means their overall attention span will increase and their mental health/performance in school will improve.

Research has shown that teenagers experience a change in the internal sleep clock so that waking up early and going to sleep early are difficult. Some people believe that high school classes should begin later in the day to better accommodate students’ natural sleep clocks. Waking up early can be a real struggle for teenagers. Most teens naturally sleep in until ten thirty or eleven on weekends. I do believe high school classes should start later because teens could sleep more naturally, it would give teenagers more time to do things in the mornings, and more sleep equals better

According to the article, some of the advantages of a later high school start time are that students will be more alert during the school day, and ready to learn. Some of the disadvantages of a later high school start time are that some athletes may miss their last bell, so that they will attend their away games, and they start their homework late.

If we start school later then kids test scores will increase, they wont fall asleep in class and they would get the appropriate amount of sleep. Sleep experts at the university of Mminnesota studied eight high schools before and after the moved to later start times. They found that the later start time, the better off students were on measures like mental health, car crash rates, attendance, and in some schools, grades and standerized test scores. This is an accurate example because it comes from sleep experts at the university of minnesota that have actually studied this topic. With later starting time you’ll have more time to sleep and will be able to pay attention in class so you can get that good grade.

Students never want to get up early in the morning to go to school.But that can possibly change if school started later in the morning.There are many benefits of school starting later.Especially for middle and high school students.

In the article “Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later For Teens’ Health” it states,“...... a National Sleep Foundation poll found that 59 percent of middle schoolers and 87 percent of high schoolers are getting less than the recommended 8 ½ to 9 ½ hours of sleep a night. ”(Shute 2). Many people say that school start time is affecting students’ health.

School start times should be later because school times should revolve around the student’s best ability to learn. When America started public schools, they had the same time frame, around seven to three. They did this so the farmers would have time to go and work in the afternoon. Well, needless to say we still have the same schedule now, with a much different industry and way of life. There are countless reasons schools should start later and countless studies that prove school should start later. I think some of the more important reasons include, a teen’s biological clock that makes their brain want to go to bed and get up late, car crashes caused by sleep deprivation and more sleep increasing concentration, alertness and a better attitude in class

National pediatricians say that making middle school and high school students start class before 8:30 a.m. threatens their health, safety, and academic performance. It is important because these teens are not getting the recommended amount of sleep each night. If school start times for teens were later, standardized test scores would be higher and more teens would graduate.

Starting school later in the day does have some advantages but in my opinion definitely more disadvantages. If high school starting times were changed to a later time then everything that students would usually do after school would have to be pushed later as well. For instance if school started at 8:30 am instead of 7:30 am and ended at 3:00 pm instead of 1:50 pm the sports

I think High School should start later. I think this for three reasons which are that students do not get enough sleep, grades will suffer, and students will not be motivated to learn. So I believe school should start later.

We live in an age when many growing adolescents are constantly fighting their natural body clocks. It could potentially be one of the biggest issues facing our high school systems. Many school’s across America have started to push back their school start times. Is it worth it? The answer is yes. School should start later in order to unlock our nation’s high school potential.
