Atticus Finch notes in Harper Lee’s work, To Kill a Mockingbird, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view … until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” People throughout history and up to present day struggle to demonstrate empathy. Unfortunately, the lack of empathetic performance results in unbearable racism affecting minorities all across the world. After a series of interviews, the co written work of The Autobiography of Malcolm X as Told to Alex Haley, accurately represents Malcolm X’s journey in life as his views about race transform. Born into a black family in Omaha, Nebraska, X experienced discrimination and racial violence from the start. After he moved to Boston, X began exploring his supposedly engraved position in society by selling drugs and performing other criminal behaviors. Eventually, X got arrested and during his reflective period in jail he educated himself through the bible and the dictionary. Simultaneously, X found his true identity as a black American Muslim activist and once he was released he made a pilgrimage to Mecca which changed his life by opening his eyes to the real world with a newfound purpose in life. Although X originally forms claims of value that advocate for separation between black and white communities in America by generalizing white Americans, his views transform after his trip to Mecca and he develops strong claims of policy, which through his effective use of rhetoric
