Greg a 14-year-old boy living with his parents in the basement. He has to take these off label prescription drug. An off label prescription drug is a drug that isn’t prescription by a doctor or pro. Greg could find these drugs on the streets or even with his family members. Be sure to take your drugs to a doctor and get them copied and your drugs. Greg is taking these drugs to feel better but he doesn’t know if they should be off labeled by a pro or just somebody else. When off label drugs were in the 1980’s it is different than today. It’s different because the drugs used back then were, just for pain. But today we use drugs to get better with an illness or disease. Off label drugs has been used since the 1980’s, supporters and no supporters argue if off label drugs are a good thing or not. This is what the doctors did in the 1980's, there was one problem; the drugs had been tested on and approved for people with severe arrhythmias ("off label"). It took a long time for people to stop prescribing these drugs because they just couldn’t believe it and killed over 50,000 people in …show more content…
The first reason is Many people with cancer have to take these if they want to survive or get better (“Off Label Drugs”). Every other kid gets to live by a single drop of this prescribe drug. 85% of kids survive these conditions (Gulfo 4). That companies have the right to market their products to doctors. FDA announced that there were important public policy reasons for allowing manufactures to disseminate truthful and non-misleading medical journal articles (“Off Label Drugs”). Some doctors who support off label drugs prescribe say that it actually helps when companies that do the work and not doctors ("off label"). The doctors should be the people that save people's life and makes kids great and healthy again, not the people that put drugs on markets that people can
With access to prescription drugs, people are able to treat a multitude of diseases and illnesses. These drugs help deal with pain, inability to sleep, depression, and much more. Every day we are increasingly living in a world where there is better living through chemicals. However, what most do not seem to see is the rising tide of pain, illness, and ultimately death being caused by the pills people take every day. Most keep drugs in a special place in their minds, where they see them as harmless. Sadly, this is not the case, and in some cases our prescription drugs can be just as harmful as illegal drugs (King 68).
"Children, young people, their parents or legal guardians, and health care professionals in all settings make decisions about medicines based on sound information about risk and benefit. They have access to safe and effective medicines that are prescribed on the basis of the best available evidence" (Caldwell, 2013).
The systematic scheduling of drugs in the United States is arbitrary which leads to a discriminative social injustice. Some psychedelic substances such as Psilocybin are schedule 1 drugs, while alcohol and nicotine are legal. According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) both alcohol and nicotine are proven to be harmful and addictive (2017). Conversely, Psychedelic substances have not been proven to be addictive. This equates to a social injustice that discriminates over someone who may prefer the effects of psilocybin to nicotine, even under the science that has shown nicotine and alcohol have a higher potential for abuse. Unfortunately, many political factors come into play regarding the legal status of drugs and industries such as the pharmaceutical, tobacco and alcohol industries, who harbor the most money and have an influence in the legality of drugs whether they are safe or not. While legalizing psychedelic substances would most likely cut into profits for these large industries they would bring about economic benefits as well.
A new escalating drug abuse epidemic has come about in the recent years; people are now choosing prescription pills as their new drug of choice. The use, abuse and death caused by prescription drugs has increased significantly within the past couple years. All types of prescription pills are more easily accessible from their doctors, family members or off the street. Doctors are handing out prescriptions for pills, such as pain management pills, muscle relaxers, and anti-anxiety, like they are candy and not potentially dangerous to the consumers. In today’s society doctors are over prescribing pills to Americans and the prescription pill distribution should be more closely monitored and controlled. Although there are people who benefit
We live in a nation where thousands of people are constantly suffering from chronic pain; due to hard work, improper use of body mechanics, and accidents. As a result the population has become fairly accustomed to taking medications as a fast way to alleviate their pain. The majority of the population does not know what is in the pills they are taking. They rely on their professional physicians to make the decision as to what is being prescribed. They rarely question the side effects, effectiveness, or safety. The public is constantly targeted by advertisement. Making people believe that they know all the information needed to use new medication. Companies are constantly introducing new pills with various uses. Advertisements urge the
In the hectic pill-popping world we live in today, around 6.5 million people in the U.S. currently abuse prescription medication and out of those 6.5 million, 4.5 of those people abuse pain relievers according to Nova Science Publishers (Greer). Codeine, oxycodone, Adderall, and Xanax just to name a few of the favorites among abusers (Fahey and Miller). These medications can end up on the streets and in the hands of party-goers looking for a “good time”. Dangerous pills such as those listed above can be quite useful by people with authentic medical conditions such as anxiety and ADHD, but also have the power to be abused by teenage party goers that crave a
Not only are patients impacted by this issue, but so is the healthcare system. Consumer reports estimates that “$200 billion per year is spent in the U.S. on the unnecessary and improper use of medication, for the drugs themselves and related medical costs, according to the market research firm IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics” (Carr, T. 2017). America’s health care is very expensive and we can save
“In 2002, 404,000 people used heroin in the United States. By 2016, there were 948,000 people. This is a 135% increases in the past 14 years” (Kounang). I decided to research about heroin, because I want to know what heroin is and which celebrities have done it and survived or died. I knew it was an addictive drug that many people overdose on. There was a lot of misconceptions that I had about heroin. Originally I thought heroin users become addicted instantly. I still have some questions about heroin. Why is heroin so popular? Who has done it? Even though some people think heroin is not bad, people should not take heroin because it's a highly effective drug and tons of people are dying from overdosing.
People all over the world, continue to be tendered prescription medication, which in many cases further complicate health issues with its myriad of side effects. In fact, statistics have shown that approximately 100,000 people around the world die as a result of prescription drugs annually (Smith, 2012). On the contrary, according
In the United States of America, there is prescription drug abuse epidemic that continues to be a growing concern. Prescription drugs cause a large amount of overdoses and result in an abundant amount of deaths each year. A government study conducted shows this epidemic is scarily on the rise, “A recent government study found a 400% increase in prescription drug abuse between 1998 and 2008” (Schreiner 531). The excessive use of prescription drug abuse is leading to nonmedical use of the drugs, and creating addiction. Furthermore society is paying an extreme amount of money in this battle. With this drug abuse on the rise, legislators must create a law preventing doctors and pharmacists from over prescribing prescription medications as well a law to require they both participate in drug monitoring programs to prevent drug abuse. Now is the time that doctors and the pharmaceutical industry must be held accountable for their role in causing one of America’s worst addictions. The over medication of prescription drugs in the United States must be brought to an end by legislators creating laws to stop
Even though people need their prescriptions, the abuse of them is getting out of control and we need to find a way to regulate it better, because it can destroy a family, cause some to become addicted, or even kill them. Prescription drugs are no joke, they can be worse than illegal drugs like marijuana, cocaine, and even heroin. The only difference is a doctor can prescribe these types of drugs. The problem we run into with prescription drugs is there is not enough being done to keep the person from becoming addicted or them selling to others. In 2007 2.5 million Americans abused just painkillers (Drug free world). That is not even including the other two types. Now it is starting to affect teens, one out of every ten teenagers admit to abusing a prescribed drug(Drug-free world).
In the United States, a drug can only be advertised legally after being approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Once attaining at least one FDA-approved use, physicians can prescribe a drug for other unapproved uses, based on their clinical judgment; this is referred to as “off-label use” (McCambridge, 2008). In general, marketing drugs for off-label uses is illegal; however, pharmaceutical companies have gone to various lengths within their legal rights to accomplish exactly that.
Experimental drug treatments are one of today’s leading controversies. Many people feel as if it is morally wrong to test medications and treatments on humans when scientists and doctors are not completely sure of what the end results will be. I, personally, am an advocate for experimental drug treatments for the preeminent reason of faster medical advancement. Some drugs take years or decades to develop, but can be sped up to months and even just weeks of development when exploratory tests are done. If a patient of mine was terminally ill, I would strongly advise them to dedicate their body to the medical advancement cause. Of course, I’d be entirely honest about all of the risks involved, but also emphasize how much their contribution
Counterfeit medications are unsafe and a treat to people around the world. The use of the medications can cause harm to both the body and society. It is important that the consumers are educated about counterfeit mediations. Most people who purchase counterfeit medication may not understand that laws are being broken. Drugs are unlawfully and consciously being made to resemble the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved drug. Sellers are infringing on the companies Intellectual Property (IP), as medications are protected in law by copyright, patents, and trademarks. Copyrights are protecting the pharmaceutical copay ownership of the product, whereas the counterfeit drug suppliers are claiming the medication as the original. Fake medications are being stamped with the same logo Drug patents last 20 years and once the patent expires the owner has the authority to decide how others can use the product. The counterfeit drug supplies do not have the right to copy the makeup and design of the legitimate drug. There are many fake drugs that are slightly identical to the original. Visually the consumer may not be able to tell the difference, the drugs are the same color, shape, and include the unique logo of the pharmaceutical company. Due to the misappropriation consumers are lead to believe they are receiving the same product.
Today in our modern society, many people believe that teen’s develop a mindset of having a clean system and to stay drug free. However, people are not able to foresee that the drug use in America has rising up tremendously. Studies have shown that drugs can not only have impact on your life, but also have impact on those who surround you and also can led to the absence of adolescence. It leads to bad habits and only brings evil deeds. The possession of drugs and the conspiracy sell is illegal in the Unites States. If arrest and put on trial due to drugs can mean serious jail time. According to the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, people are considered to have a substance use disorder. (Live Science) The Live Science states “... people have strong urges to use a substance or can't control their use of it, or if their use impairs them in social situations or leads to risky behavior.” Members of society have needs when a drug is being in place into there normal day routine. The report also states that an estimated 27.1 million people in the U.S. used an illegal drug in the past month. (Live Science) The mass-production, sale and possession of illegal drugs should be banned in the United States.
