Poverty has been on the rise for what seems forever, too often people state that poverty is on the rise, but they never give an exact answer why it is that way. Numerous people choose to blame it on those who live in poverty. Meanwhile, people complain that too many civilians are on government programs to aid them. It is not the fault of those in poverty; instead, it is the fault of the American government. The government will unwilling throw money at those in poverty and never address the issues at hand. In fact, the government policies that exist, plus those that should exist but do not, cause people to become trapped in the world of poverty. For example, people are arrested for up to but not limited to, four years for carrying around drugs or they have the option to pay 250,000 dollars, which is highly unlikely that they would be able to pay the fine (FindLaw). The current policy for drug abuse is futile, considering many of those drug abusers will go back to a life of drugs. In fact, about 95% of released prisoners return to a life of drugs (NADCP). This displays the laziness the government has toward their own citizens. Rehab, counseling, community service are all “punishments” the government could give to such drug offenders; instead, they choose to imprison them and waste away tax dollars that could be used to support families in need.
