As the society changing, the history of marriage also changes. Marriage is legally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship, but do those two partners always have to be a man and a woman? Most people believe that homosexuals should be granted equal rights as heterosexual couples. Being as an important social issue, same-sex marriage has become a hot topic of public debates in the recent years. For over the past decade, public support for the same-sex marriage has quickly risen. The United States is one of over twenty countries that allow gay and lesbian couples to wed. I believe that same-sex marriage should be legalized in all countries for several reasons, such as being an issue of equal rights, separation of church and state, no negative effect on the heterosexual communities, increasing in child adoption, and decreasing divorce and suicide rates.
First, it can clearly be seen that same-sex marriage is primarily about equality. Everyone has equal rights and liberties to chase happiness, as long as it does not cause harm to the society, so why should their freedoms be limits? Why can’t someone be able to marry a person they truly love? Discrimination and banning homosexual couples to get married violates human rights and freedoms. Laws which against gay marriage deny the First Amendment which states that everyone has freedom of speech, expression and religion. Sexual determination is an option, so it is how some people can express themselves.
Same-sex marriage should be marriage because everyone is equal, love is always right, and people have a right to choose their own soulmates. First, equality is a basic right, which means everyone should get the same treatment. The restriction against same-sex marriage is an offense to the dignity of lesbians and gays, because it limits the range of relationship options open to them (Mello). The limit of same-sex marriage is against homosexuals to enjoy the same right as heterosexuals. It is not fair for homosexual to get the different treatment. There is a law to declare that legalizing homosexual marriage is to achieve the basis of equality come true. (Albertson).
In the earlier years back in the 1920’s there have been a lot of talk of the marriage laws and how it should be. To some they feel that marriage should be a covenant bond between a man and woman because that’s the way God intended it to be according to the bible. But for others they feel as long as they are happy with whoever they are with, it really should not matter who they are married to whether it is someone from the same sex or someone from the opposite sex. According to some, marriage equality is the civil rights issue of our day.
Gay marriage is a topic that is so often discussed by those with highly diverse opinions. As some people agree with those of the same sex pursuing marriage, others do not seem to feel the same way. This fact can apply to individuals as well as entire countries. Several of these individuals and countries originally agreed with the subject of gay marriage as others were required to be forced due to the fact that their ban on gay marriage was decided as unconstitutional. Same-sex marriage is a controversial issue in today's world where some choose to agree with the decision of homosexual people and some choose to oppose it, all doing so usually for different reasons.
Americans view/ deem to be happiness ont eh standards of the American Dream: the ability to achieve economic success. A “normalized” family based on American standards encompasses the idea of marriage and having children. Before the legalization of gay marriage, this “dream” was generally exclusive to heteronormative couples. Slowly, the acceptance of gay marriage as another possibility has opened up the “normalized” family structure to include homosexual couples. The dream is the image of happiness and for those who do not try to achieve it are not deemed happy. Those who choose to be included into this structure are more tolerated than others who do not fit in this molded construct. (AHMED W/ marriage and kids) Queer individuals try to replicate a model that can very well have been defined in heteronormative settings and trying to adapt it: performativity.
In the present time, marriage between two people of the same sex is legal in 37 states and the District of Columbia. During the course of the United States’ history, people have fought discrimination. People has battled to recognize equality for racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, and immigrants. As a result, denying some people, the option to marry due to their sexual orientation is discriminatory and creates the idea of a second of class citizens. I am pro-gay marriage not only for what I have stated before but also for the following disclosure.
Francis DeBernardo, head of a LGBT Catholics organization, has said that "many gay and lesbian couples are leading lives of heroic devotion to each other, their children, and their communities. I hope and pray that you will reflect not only on the harm that this decree will cause but also the good that can occur if you withdraw it." (Crary). People who like the same sex shouldn't be categorized in society as people to be frowned upon when they lead a good example, but others disagree. This is why the discussion of same-sex couples is so controversial. Gay marriage is a very important issue in modern society in the U.S because it is more accepted than what it used to be by everyday people and household life is healthier than in opposite sex marriages; unfortunately, it is still frowned upon by many and some business owners still decline service due to discrimination.
Just like how African Americans should have the same rights as whites, and women should have the same rights as men. Denying someone that right is discriminatory. "The right to marrry is a fundemental right inherent in the liberty of the person, couples of the same-sex may not be deprives of that right and that liberty." (The Editorial Board) Even our president believes in same-sex marriage, in 2012 when discussing the topic he said, "When all all Americans are treated as equal, we all are more free." (The Editorial Board) Other people usually ask, "why should gay couples have the right to marry? However the question should be, why should other people decide who marries who? The Supreme Court made the right decision in legalizing gay
Love is universal for everyone no matter what race, sexual orientation, or religion. However, one cultural difference that is effected by society is gay marriage. Gay marriage should be viewed as equal to straight marriage and all over the world be viewed as socially equal. Three things that prevent gay marriage from being viewed equal are religion, political issues, and stereotyping in regards to sexual orientation. I have been raised in a gender equal house all my life and this has influenced me to be the women I am today and allow me to view people as equal no matter what race, gender, and sexual orientation. These three reasons are why the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) are not accepted into society, but they should be
This issue continues to arise and spark debate year after year and decade after decade however the facts remain that this issue should simple be answered with a yes due to the fact that all humans deserve a right to freedom and as such that right to freedom will technically dictate that they will be given the right to decide any decision they may come across, however on the technical side of debate the four main theories of morality& religion, ethical naturalism, moral relativism and nihilism all present a different side and different approach to the issue.
In today’s society, there are certain stereotypical people that are uninterested in gay or lesbian marriage. Everyone should have the right to decide on who they would like to marry. Gay marriage should be legal and a non-punishable offense because it can prevent teenage suicides, more children will be adopted, and people will not feel like second-class citizens.
America was founded in part as a way for Christians to flee tyranny in Europe. Christians wanted to be able to have freedom to worship as they chose. This desire to worship freely has remained a crucial part of what makes our nation great.
Same sex marriage is one of the most controversial issues happening in the world today. The time has come to think on a deeper level and grasp that a wedding is a ceremony to give ourselves to the one we love. These marriages can happen because we live in a great country that gives us personal freedom. In no other place are citizens promised justice and the pursuit of happiness, but, a growing percentage of our population is not fairly represented. Homosexual people deserve the same respect, dignity, love, and rights as anyone else. They should not be denied a formal relationship. It is in no way wrong to be gay and people do not recognize the extent of negativity gay or lesbian people must endure.
Every year society progressively becomes more and more excepting of things that use to never be okay or considered the norm. Television, movies, and media overall have a huge impact on making things start to seem normal and opening up people’s eyes, so they become more comfortable with it. People nowadays are greatly influenced by the media as a whole and look to it for advice on little things that us as people might not even recognize such as fashion, news, and norms. Although, being influenced by the media is not always a good thing but it has sure made huge moves for todays society. Same sex marriage on screen is beneficial to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender also known as the LGBT Community and even those who believe that it does not matter what gender you are you should just be able to be with the one you love.
In the bible we talk about marriage between “Adam and Eve” not “Adam and Steve”. Should same- sex married couples be given the same benefits as regular married couples? On June 26th, 2013 the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York granted the privilege for same-sex marriage to be given the same benefits as a regular married couple examples of some of the benefits would be like Medicare, Social security, and Veterans benefits. The court case became known as United states vs Windsor, Edith Windsor in her capacity as the executor of the estate of Thea Clara Spyer.
For generations, homosexuality has been repelled against and condemned. Homosexuality is not “normal” according to certain traditions and religions. However, in March of 2015, “U.S. District Judge Daniel Joran issued a preliminary injunction against the ban, citing the Supreme Court’s decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide”. On June 26, 2015 gay marriage was finally legal in all fifty states. With this law being passed, much weight was taken off same-sex couples, however, they are still facing a multitude of hardships. Same-sex relationships are presented with an abundance of obstacles when it comes to parenthood opposed to heterosexual couples. However, the hardest one they face is before parenthood- the process of adoption and the technology that aids in procreation.
