Sportsball: Is It Really Move The Thing To The Other Thing?

Everyone is a nerd about something. Whether it be the more traditionally “nerdy” comic books and video games, movies, clothes, or, yes, sports. That guy that can rattle off every pitcher’s ERA from his favorite baseball team in the last ten seasons? He’s a nerd, too. Now that it’s 2017 and video games and superhero movies are for everyone, it’s time to stop feeling superior to people based on how they spend their personal time. It’s time to let everyone enjoy their hobbies in peace. Without fail, surrounding the superbowl or the world cup or any and all of your favorite major sporting events, the same jokes pop up all over social media and in the hallways. I’ll refer to the jokes by their punchline, the intentionally generic sounding “sportsball.” The comment may disguise itself as a tweet, a post, or frequently, a graphic t-shirt. It will always go something like this “And then the one guy kicked the ball right past the other guy and got a point. #SPORTSBALL” (Dalton). Or a shirt I’ve seen with the words “Move the thing to the other thing!” and a picture of a man yelling “I’m super worked-up because my team did stuff!” No matter which sport the joke aims to lampoon, the end goal is always the same. To claim the high ground, as though the teller is somehow above sports. Somehow too enlightened to be entertained by grueling competition and feats of physical strength.
