Everyone is a nerd about something. Whether it be the more traditionally “nerdy” comic books and video games, movies, clothes, or, yes, sports. That guy that can rattle off every pitcher’s ERA from his favorite baseball team in the last ten seasons? He’s a nerd, too. Now that it’s 2017 and video games and superhero movies are for everyone, it’s time to stop feeling superior to people based on how they spend their personal time. It’s time to let everyone enjoy their hobbies in peace. Without fail, surrounding the superbowl or the world cup or any and all of your favorite major sporting events, the same jokes pop up all over social media and in the hallways. I’ll refer to the jokes by their punchline, the intentionally generic sounding “sportsball.” The comment may disguise itself as a tweet, a post, or frequently, a graphic t-shirt. It will always go something like this “And then the one guy kicked the ball right past the other guy and got a point. #SPORTSBALL” (Dalton). Or a shirt I’ve seen with the words “Move the thing to the other thing!” and a picture of a man yelling “I’m super worked-up because my team did stuff!” No matter which sport the joke aims to lampoon, the end goal is always the same. To claim the high ground, as though the teller is somehow above sports. Somehow too enlightened to be entertained by grueling competition and feats of physical strength. The jokes are intentionally dismissive, and the point is only ever to justify the person’s ignorance as
There are many fans and parents that like going to games to see their favorite players or kids play and they spend their game time watching their players make baskets or scoring touchdowns. But, there are also those fans that sit in the bleachers game after game whose players never seem make it off the bench. This happens more often in High School sports than college and professional sports. The coaches of any sports team usually put in the best players or maybe they have a favorite player that's the “star” player that gets more time in the game and more practice and help outside the games and practices. Certain players, however, should not get more attention from their coach or coach’s than others.
Unlike with sports, that provided physical exercise to their children, parents were quick to attach a negative to stigma to videogames which they saw no real benefit in. Judgments about gamers being nerdy and lazy spread like wildfire, until gamers were forced into none-expressive shells, only talking about their exploits with other gamers. If mentioning your interests in video games to outsiders is taboo, then talking about your fascination with esports is even more so, even kids who accept video games into their lives still have a hostile attitude towards watching games played by other people. Watching esports is considered the pinnacle of
Many people argue that competitive sports raise numerous amounts of pressure on the youth making them distracted from things such as their education and because it can cause severe injuries, but some people argue that youth should play competitive sports because it teaches major life lessons that can help with many different aspects of their future such as college, getting a job, and many more. Playing competitive sports also improves your physical strength, another physical aspect of playing competitive sports is decreasing your chance of being obese or having disease. If you don't prefer to play competitive sports there are alternative options such as biking or walking to school. In an HT Health article “Sports Seen As Key Weapon in Fighting Teen Obesity” it says that in a study with 1,700 kids, ten percent walked or biked to school 3 ½ days a week,, in the study they found that biking or walking to school lowered the risk of being obese by 33%. I argue that kids should play competitive sports because of the important life skills taught through these sports and the physical benefit of playing sports. In this paper I will explain how communication, time management, and lowering the risk of being obese; supports my claim, “Kids should play competitive sports”
America’s baseball diamonds, soccer fields, hockey rinks, and basketball courts have never been so busy with children. The number of kids involved in an organized sport is not what is so groundbreaking. It’s the way in which children are playing or how their parents are arranging for them to play that may be cause for concern (Ferguson). Much controversy surrounds youth sports with the biggest disagreements coming over parental involvement and the intensity of play. Although there are many benefits for team participation, there is a growing fear that the negatives are starting to outweigh the positives.
Football is often labeled as a dangerous, unsafe sport, but there are many good things that come along with playing football. In the past two weeks I have learned about the risks that accompany football. Many kids suffer with concussions and face injuries from the sport, which scares many people away. But, despite the risks and the unsafe label, I would allow my child to play football because it promotes health, builds friendships, and helps gain toughness.
High school athletics are important to athletes that eat, sleep, and even dream sports. This is awesome for anyone that loves and has a passion for the game. What happens after a couple years of high school athletics if a player is really good at what they do? These athletes will start getting offers from colleges and if they are good enough then they may get offers from the NBA.
Many incoming student athletes face problems with being out of shape when they first start their season. Many will claim that they will start to get in shape when they begin practicing and once they get used to it. It could be true for some student athletes, but they will find themselves struggling throughout the first couple months. Why not start off the season already in shape by eating correctly. Diet will be one of the most important lifestyles in a student athlete’s life. A lot of new collegiate student athletes will not know that eating three meals a day will help them throughout their whole season as well as their pre-season. I believe that all student athletes should consume at least three meals a day while keeping in mind what they are eating. Not only is it important for them to eat three meals a day but it is very important for all student athletes to consume the right amount of water everyday.
Football is an American sport, that many families and friends enjoy together. However, many people have not been interested in going to the football games they normally enjoy and not because of losses, but because of the disrespectful players in the National Football League (NFL). Kneeling during the National Anthem has become an issue, and some find it offensive because it’s disrespectful to veterans and active military personel, it shows our country doesn’t care how we act, and it causes people of our nation to fight each other.
Every four years every country across the planet partakes in the biggest sporting event; the Olympics. Athletes spend countless hours practicing for their spot on the podium. A podium for three individuals denoted with a first, second, and third place finish and medallion. However, in today's world, children who are playing sports, are growing up all standing on the first-place podium and are all handed participation trophies. YMCA leagues, Little League Baseball teams and every other major youth sports program exemplifies the fact that everyone who plays deserves a trophy to feel accomplished, but that is unnecessary. Giving participation trophies to students gives them a false sense of success later in life.
Why is it so common for pro athletes to become bankrupt subsequently after their retirement from the game or after being fired for poor performance? I mean let’s face it we know all about the high paying jobs like becoming a doctor or lawyer, lead technician… yes these big time jobs everyone dreams of and assumes they will take care of your finances by itself. For the most part, this is true, actually it is very true. Any of the jobs I just mentioned will take care of you for the years to come and after that to the point where you will just have money to blow on anything. However, there is something bigger… much bigger, and that is in the billion dollar franchise of pro sports. There is unimaginable wealth and greed involved in this industry. Actually in some sports like the national football league the league minimum as of 2014 is a whopping and incredible 420k and that’s just the first taste of money you will receive during your introduction year as a rookie, and trust me this number is growing outstandingly every year http://athletevsdoctorpay.blogspot.com/. Sounds like quite a bit of money just for slinging a football across a field, hitting things with a bat, or shooting a ball into a hoop.
Many People think that the collegiate sports are just a form of entertainment for them and the players but the players think of these sports as a job. The NCAA is the National Collegiate Athletic Association and it is the center of making all of the rules for collegiate sports. They decide on if student athletes are employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act or not. Student athletes do not get enough recognition and seen as students or entertainment but not as employees. Although some people do not believe student athletes deserve the recognition of being employees, others know they should because these students fall under the title employee from the requirements placed by the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Do you have a passion, something you love to do more than anything? Imagine people trying to stop you from doing what you love because they think it’s not useful or a waste. Some people say competitive sports cost too much and they are way too dangerous for young kids to participate in. However, for many youth, competitive sports play a positive role. When kids play competitive sports, they are happier and they learn how to be healthy. Also, they learn life lessons that they will need for the future.
Tradition reigns supreme in the beloved American pastime of professional sports. Activities like singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and watching Sunday Night Football together add to the rallying sense of community that professional sports offer to fans. Tradition rarely causes controversy. However, the pre-game tradition of playing of the national anthem has recently evolved into a platform that athletes are using to demonstrate personal beliefs. Protestors of the national anthem have been met by criticism, stating that it is not an athlete’s job to protest for social rights. In addition, critics say that athletes are protesting and disrespecting the military in addition the American flag. Analysis of the criticism lobbied towards the protesters suggest that the original intent of the demonstrators is often misconstrued. Professional sports athletes should not be criticized for using their respective sports platform to protest for political or social change.
Some people believe that competitive sports are important for kids because of its many benefits such as getting in shape, but it should be understood that the cons outweigh the pros. Kids should not play competitive sports because of costs, stress, and injuries.
