The percentage of individuals that wear a seatbelt is 87% leaving just 13% to be the amount of people that decide to not wear this safety feature (Hurst). When a car crash is experienced, Newton’s first law is experienced as well. Inertia causes a forward momentum upon impact causing the driver and the passenger to slam through the windshield and even possibly be deployed from the car. However, this could be prevented by the use of seatbelt, but some people decide not to wear these for their own comfort, disregarding their physical well being. Car Crashes are the leading cause of deaths for human beings between the ages of 5 and 34;, however this could be different if more people wore seatbelts (Hurst). Studies prove, that wearing a seatbelt reduces death and serious injuries by 50% in the event of a car crash (Hurst). If 90% of people made the choice to wear a safety belt than 5,000 deaths would be avoided as well as 130,000 injuries (Contributor). If people would just wear seatbelts than there wouldn’t be 5,000 people …show more content…
When in a car accident it is not uncommon for the seatbelt to run against your neck area, resulting in a horrendous and painful burn (Rosie). One of the most notable injuries due to the fore of a seatbelt on the body is bruised and fractured ribs. As a result, this could interfere with a person’s lungs and/or heart, which could lead to death (AICA Orthopedics). The other group of people who don’t wear safety belts are one’s who want their own personal freedom. In a car on a long road trip it is extremely hard to fall asleep with an itchy belt that chokes you if you put your head to the side. So, why not just take the belt off, so you can get a good rest. The information proves that while it may seem that seat belts prevent injury they can as easily cause deathly injuries and it’s much more comfortable not to wear the annoying
There are many people who do not understand the importance of seat belts for safety. They do not wear their seat belts even though they know the mortality statistics. Most of them think that seat belts do not help when an accident occurs. We have all made the excuse that the seat belt is uncomfortable. Driving is a dangerous duty that should always be practiced with more caution and care. Some people think that not wearing a seatbelt is rebellious. Other people think that they will never get into accident. Some of the consequences of not wearing a seat belt is that you could die, you can get injured and many more. So far, the only way to avoid these consequences from happening is to wear a seatbelt.
1.Wearing seat belt saves many people.Seat belt use virtually eliminates the possibility of ejection from the vehicle.Wearing seat belt keeps you from being thrown from your vehicle..It keeps you from banging against parts of your car such as the door.It can also keep you not to hit to steering and the thing in front of you.Seat belts keep the driver and passengers from banging each other, a cause of real injury in some accidents.Airbags are some times useless if you are not wearing seat belt, you can be thrown from your car.If you has thrown from the car, you can be hit some parts of car.So people wearing seat belts can be illegal.
According to NHTSA, 13,941 lives were saved by seat belts in 2015 while an additional 2,814 could have been saved if properly restrained (2017). One impact of seat belt usage is reducing the risk serious or fatal injuries by about half. The CDC reported in 2009, 53% of occupants killed in crashes in the U.S. were not wearing seat belts (2014). According to data collected in 2008 by NHTSA, seat belts have saved an estimated 225,000 lives (2009). The benefit of wearing a seat belt can help increase chances of surviving a crash with little or no
2 Evidence:The increase in road traffic accidents and the seat belt compliance rate contribute to higher rates of injuries resulting from seat belt use.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “in 2015, seat belt use in passenger vehicles saved an estimated 13,941 lives” (1). The NHTSA goes on to say that almost 30 million Americans still don’t use seat belts on a daily basis. Since vehicle accidents are among the leading causes of death in the United States and even the world, the argument to improve seat belt technology has increased dramatically. Researchers are often more concerned with whether or not people are wearing their seat belts, not the effectiveness of them, until now, although both are incredibly important. Seat belt safety, which is directly related to seat belt technology, has been shown to be increasingly ineffective because of the high severity
For the people who use the excuse that "They are just going around the corner" should realize that 80% of traffic fatalities occur within a 25-mile radius of your home and at a speed of 40 miles an hour. Buckling up to drive around the block is probably the best time to do so. Everyone knows that car crashes can cause death; yet because people do not buckle up all the time thousands of people still die in traffic crashes yearly. Seatbelts can save your life in a crash and can reduce your risk of a serious injury. Seat belts keep drivers and passengers from being ejected through windows or doors. This is important because your chances of being killed are five times greater if you are thrown from the vehicle. Thousands of people who die in car crashes each year might still be alive today if they had only been wearing their seat belts.
How do you feel when you are told what you will or will not do? You may be told that it is for your own good, but who has the right to decide what is or is not good for you? After all who knows you better than you do? This brings me to the topic of my discussion. Even though there are some statistics that may show a lower rate of injury or death if you wear a seat belt when in an automobile accident, I do not feel that the government has the right to make wearing a seat belt mandatory for adults because by making seat belts mandatory it takes away from our right to freedom of choice, and wearing a seat
By not wearing a seat belt only the driver’s security is affected. First, Whenever a driver is not using his seat belt the protection of others on the road is not affected (Balaker 113). To clarify, There is simply no need to protect people from their poor decisions. Likewise, Laws should focus on protecting the
In 2016, 3,773 people died in a motor vehicle traffic accident and of that 3,773, 43.71% were reported not wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred. The “Click it or Ticket” slogan was made to encourage drivers to wear seatbelts, but it’s impossible to pull over every single person that isn’t wearing
A lot of people are against wearing seat belts even though it is against the law not to wear them. Some people are against them because they believe that they can hurt you in certain instances. Moreover, to an instance where the occupants hits something with an extreme force causing cardiac arrest or chest injuries. Others argue that the belt may not work properly during a crash and could possible end up ejecting the occupant from the vehicle, likely killing them. Nevertheless there are people who say that the locking of the belt could kill them in the circumstance that they swerve into a river with the belt locking them in. Another argument people have theories about is that seat belts make people drive more recklessly. The driver may feel
Yet as cars are normalized and seen as a regular thing, they are not typically viewed as the danger that they are. This normalcy is the cause for the lack of seatbelt use and the reason why “Of the teens (aged 13-20 years) that died in crashes in 2012, approximately 55% of them were not wearing a seat belt” (CDC “Seat Belts: Get the Facts”). Statistically speaking, not wearing a seatbelt increases a person’s chance of death immensely from the second they get in the car. The seat belt was placed in vehicles for a reason, and ignoring that reason could be a life or death decision. And this life or death scenario is one that doesn't revolve solely around the person involved. Pregnant driver who were not wearing seat belts during the time of car crash “are nearly three times more likely to experience a fetal death and twice as likely to have excessive maternal bleeding” (Hyde “Seatbelts Greatly Reduce…”). Wearing a seat belt can save the life of more than one person. The statistics in support of seat belts have shown only positive results in relation to survival, leading to the conclusion that seat belts should their job and become mandatory in order to save
The cost of unbuckled drivers and passengers goes beyond those killed and the loss to their families. We all pay for those who don't buckle up, in higher taxes, higher health care and higher insurance costs. On average, inpatient hospital care costs for unbelted crash victim are 50 percent higher than those for a belted crash victim. Society bears 85 percent of those costs, not the individuals involved. Every American pays about $580 a year toward the cost of crashes. If everyone buckled up this figure would drop significantly. By reaching the goal of 90 percent seat belt use, and 25 percent reduction in child fatalities by the year 2005, we will save $8.8 billion annually. Not only in taxes but seat belt tickets can mean points on your license and hefty fines. In New York the maximum fine for first offense is fifty dollars. Everyday police officers pull over drivers for seat belt checks, don't let them get you.
Hi Staci, Great Post describing the benefits of wearing seats belts. I agree with you that one lucky incident doesn’t mean that seat belts are not needed. I like the point you made about the person landing on the grass with reduced the impact and what if it was cement, would he have survived? In my discussion I have similar findings as you that proper research should be done before making conclusion. There are people that would avoid or not accept facts if they have personal experience that is contradictory. In my research I found National Standard Council (NSC) publish data that showed 100 people die every day in a car crash and more than 1000 people suffer life changing injuries. NCS reports that more than 90% of Americans wear seat
Do you buckle up every time you go for a drive, no matter the distance? Do you ask your passengers to buckle up as well? Everyone should always wear a seat belt because they save lives every day.
Seat belts although they are the most effective safety device on cars must be made safer. Out of all people who died in car accidents, 63% of those were not wearing seat belts (seatbelts). This goes to show you the effectiveness of seat belt. Therefore automotive manufactures must mandate the installation of 5-point seatbelt on all cars. In all major race car organization such as NASCAR (National Association Stock Car Automotive Racing) they require these 5-point seat belt. Which is nothing more than a seatbelt that is buckled in 5 spots rather that the conventional 3.
