Why do we hate going to school? Why are we sluggish all day? Why do some people get too tired to put full effort into a test? People are tired of these unfair school hours. Things need to change; but how? Well, there's plenty of options. Schools should be on Monday’s, Wednesday’s, and Friday’s, with a week break every two weeks, starting at 9:00 a.m. and goes year round.
Why does school start so early anyway? I’ve always been told it has to do with preparing us for a regular work schedule, but they can’t be serious, can they? We’ve been waking up earlier and earlier, year after year, and we’re still tired! There's no way to “practice” waking up early; you don’t just get used to it. No matter how many days a week I wake up at 5:20 a.m.

every morning. Back in my middle school years I had a hard time with my sleeping habits. I would often stay up way too late and be tired during school. My grades really took a punch to the gut, even in middle school! I went from having all A’s and only one B+ to having a D- in my favorite class. Think about how much more of a problem that would have been if I was in highschool. If we add more breaks in between each weeks, like having a week break every two weeks instead of one big break once in awhile like Christmas breaks and springs breaks, then it gives the students a chance to unravel more often, making them more obligated to focus when they have school because they will be rested allowing them to put more effort into their work, leading to better grades and better students. So why not try out this new method of school? Because of practice for future job hours, sport practices, or the fear of change? Not any longer, will we wait for the change we so dearly need!
Most teachers and school staff agree that school starts very early and would like it to start later, so who wants it to start early? Who’s keeping it like this? If most school employees don’t like it then how come change isn’t happening? Maybe because then if we changed the starting
Staying up until 1am to finish math homework and studying for that huge history test next class is pretty routine for some teens. Juggling school, sports, a social life, and other extracurriculars is tough, and teens are already in a critical period in their life. It is the time period in which teens grow and learn the most, and sets them up for a bright future. Staying healthy both mentally and physically is imperative, and sleep is probably the most important. Schools starting as early as 7am limits a teen’s potential. If schools were to start later, the benefits would be endless. Schools starting later improves both physical and mental health of students, keeps the individual and those around them safer, and improves students performance in school and sports.
Many of my school friends have tried to argue the point that school should start later. All of those friends for which only added their opinion and failed to use scientific information and lost their argument. not only does it have to do with adolescence, but mental health in teens, and educationally. and I heard of puberty? shouldn't our parents, teachers and other people who wake us up at the crack of dawn care if we succeed.
For years and years there has been a lot of discussion about when a reasonable time for students to wake up and go to school should be. There are two main sides. One side believes that school should start later, and the other side believes that the school start times should not be changed. The average teenagers’ alarm for school goes off as early as 6:00 A.M. A little less than half of U.S. public schools start before 8:00 A.M. Studies show that over half of students are not getting 8 hours of sleep or more. That leads to the 33% of teenagers who are found asleep in the classroom (Owens).
School could be a pain, especially forcing yourself to wake up early in the morning just to go to school. We could at least wake up more later than early in the morning if we are going to school. Imagine if you could go to school later than usually. This plan actually help students. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging education policymakers to start middle- and high-school classes later in the morning. The idea is to improve the odds of adolescents getting sufficient sleep so they can thrive both physically and academically. The school day should start more later because student needs enough sleep, students could get excessive sleepiness in adolescents and
School should be started later then it is currently starting. Many kids do not get enough sleep, for various reasons. Some students try to stay up all night on their cell phones and other devices. Other’s go to bed around 9:30 to 10:30, but these students still struggle to get up. We could eliminate tired students who crawl from class to class by moving start times back by an hour or two. If schools started at a later time then students could get more sleep, they could feel more energized and ready for school, and it could help improve students grades.
They do not have enough time to even eat! In the article “Parents and Teachers Split over School Start Times” it states “A later start would give junior high and high-school students more time to eat breakfast”(Orr). That is why we need to have school start later. So, we have more time to eat. Teachers also don't have enough time in the morning. Teacher might have kids that they have to get on the bus or they might have to drive them. Teachers and students need more time in the morning to do a lot of
Don't you hate to wake up too early in the morning? Who doesn’t? Every school day Del Mar students are waking up around seven o'clock or earlier to get ready for school. It's too early because young minds need rest to function properly. Del Mar should start at least 15 minutes later than it does. Starting school later would improve the educational quality of Del Mar by improving our health, academic performance, and attendance. The facts are all there, so why shouldn't Del Mar’s school hours change?
Have you ever been late to school because you slept in? Have you ever missed the bus because you are still sleeping? Since the dawn of time, schools have started early schools always wanted to get a head start on the day. Even elementary schools start at the same time as middle school and high school. With schools starting early school districts think that children with have time for homework and extracurriculars. Schools shouldn’t continue starting early because students wouldn’t be rushed and stressed, students would get the recommended amount of sleep, and students would have better grades.
“When schools have delayed the start of the school day, communities have seen reduced tardiness, sleeping in class, and car crash rates, as well as improved attendance, graduation rates, and standardized test scores” (School Start Later). There has been much debate whether start times for school should be kept where they are at or if they should be pushed back later. Research says that the teenage brain does not fully wake up till eight a.m. or later. So why don’t school systems make the decision to push back school start times for high school students? Although there are a few benefits to school starting earlier such as family time or an after school job, but the benefits of starting school later are much greater. Public schools should initiate later start times to increase the level of academic achievement, create a more positive attitude toward learning, and reduce the amount of stress on students.
According to the Washington post " An estimated 40 percent of high schools in the U.S. currently have a start time before 8 a.m.; only 15 percent start at 8:30 a.m. or later. The median middle school start time is 8 a.m., and more than 20 percent of middle schools start at 7:45 a.m. or earlier. (thewashingtonpost.comPg1). This shows that not a lot of kids get enough sleep or Start early, " In more than 40 states, at least 75 percent of public schools start earlier than 8:30 a.m,"according to the CDC’s report.(pg.1). According to startschoollater“Hundreds of school communities across the USA - and beyond have found ways to make this happen by prioritizing health and learning,”(startschoollater.com pg.1). The research on starting later. Therefore let's go over
‘I’m off to Club Bed featuring DJ Pillow and Mc Blanky,’ if only sleeping was this fun for everyone. Did you know with each hour of sleep we lose, there’s an increase of 58% of us attempting suicide! High School in Australia starts too early, and teenagers do not get the 9hr of sleep they need. I believe high schools should start at 10 AM, teens are at an important stage of their growth and development, because of this, we require more sleep than adults. Then, there are the expectations of older generation looming on us. In addition, without enough sleep, it can also lead to drug uses, depression, and suicide attempts. For a teenager to get up at 6 AM, is equivalent to asking an adult to get up at 4 AM. Do you want to get up at 4 AM?
Thomas Decker once said, “Sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.” School. There’s a lot of things people can say about it. Mostly they’re arguments about school such as should school have trimester or semesters? Or maybe school should be year round rather than having a summer break. However, out of all those, one in particular caught my eye. Should school start later? Now me being a student myself, this was very enticing. Being able to sleep more and have a full night's rest would be delightful. I, myself, believe that school starting later would be beneficial for school and the kids going to school. It would have its pros and cons, but it would be an overall positive impact to everyone.
Students are not getting the proper sleep they need. School start times around the nation begin at around eight in the morning. If students need to balance a large load of after school activities, these early start times may be difficult for some to adjust on. The patterns of teenager’s lives keep them up anyway and make them need to sleep later into the morning. Therefore, High schools need to start at least 30 minutes later in the day to help students, schools and society. If schools started thirty minutes later in the day, the department of education could make an alternative schedule that allows for all after school activities, just at a later start time. In an end result, students can wake up more focused on going to school with an awake and attentive approach that is ready to learn versus a slow and tired attitude.
Imagine you are on a date with the person of your dreams… things are going well when suddenly the alarm goes off. You start to panic and look around for any sign of fire but then realize that it was just your alarm clock, you reach for the snooze button and forcefully open your eyes letting reality sink in that it was just a dream. School. That would be the first thing that you would blame for being the reason that you have to wake up at 5.30 in the morning right in the middle of your dreams. Most of you might be wondering why I am delivering this speech this to you, the reason is because I strongly believe that school should start later in the day after 7.45am.
"American Academy of Pediatrics. The Academy recommended the 8:30 a.m. start time. That recommendation was based on natural sleep rhythms of school age children, especially teenagers."("High Schoolers And Snooze Button: A Public Health Crisis?") Most people do not even realize that they are not getting enough sleep. Healthy sleep is when you are able to wake up at the same time every day without an alarm clock. Many people can not do this but if you are unable to wake up the same time everyday you need to reevaluate your sleep habits. Most children need their parents or an alarm clock to wake them up for their school day which typically starts for most high school students at 6 or 7am every day. As I have established sleep is where the many memories - lesson, lectures, and notes- are consolidated and solidified. But if when that important time is being disturbed constantly then there is a possibility that information will be missing and memories may not all be solidified into a person’s long term memory. Schools that start at about 8:30 am are more likely to have more aware and more awake students which is not only beneficial for students and their safety but is also beneficial for teachers
