Persuasive Essay: Should Animal Testing Be Stopped?

As of 2015, 200 to 225 million animals are said to used in laboratory research for the biomedical industry annually worldwide. Typically defended by arguments of reliability and human health benefits, recently the question of ethics and values placed on animal testing have caused it to become a relevant and pressing topic that has been more widely discussed and debated. First off, the laboratory conditions that are instigated upon millions of animal models for the sake of medical research has been said to be unethical and cruel. Additionally, it has been debated that the results of animal experimentation are unreliable across a wide range of areas. Lastly, animal testing not only leads away from the direction of resources from more effective testing methods but also prolongs the duration of time humans may need to wait for an effective cure. Therefore, the potential benefits of animal experimentation are greatly outweighed by the risks and collective harm of humans and animals which is why resources should be directed towards more human-based testing procedures.

It is hard to imagine a life without the childhood trips to the zoo, the circus, and other animal based attractions. It is even harder to imagine a daily life without digging in to a hamburger and washing it down with a cold glass of milk. It is almost impossible to imagine a life where one does nothing wrong, but it subject to abuse and torture for selfish purposes of another species. Animal exploitation is a common yet overlooked practice all around the world. Helpless animals are poked, prodded, and slaughtered without acknowledgement due to the satisfaction it brings to the human race. However, if it was known what happens behind the scenes of the making of your dinner or the production of your favorite show at SeaWorld, the lives of tortured animals could change forever.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated” (Mahatma Gandhi). Scientists have been using animals for biomedical research for centuries. They provide a source to get information scientists can not get without harming humans. A lot of debate is spread about whether it is good or bad. Animal experimentation is a controversial topic because it is helpful to humans, but it is also cruel and inhumane.

Hey you, yea you. Ever heard of animal testing? Well if you didn’t animal testing refers to procedures performed on living animals for purposes of research into basic biology, and diseases, assessing the effectiveness of new medical products, and testing the human health and/or environmental safety of consumer and industry products such as cosmetics, household cleaners, food additives, pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals. So basically test human products on animals. Now my perspective on this is that animal testing is wrong and I will tell you why. I believe it is wrong because it is animal cruelty. They are held against their will. While I am telling you all about this awful process I want you to think about your pets, or any pet doesn’t matter just think of an animal.

For centuries humans have dedicated their time and research to animal experimentation. A large number of these animals are being utilized and taken from their homes involuntarily. They are abused, mishandled and harmed for our own benefit to create products such as cosmetic supplies, vaccines, and medication.

Animal testing, and experimentation on monkeys has been going on for several decades, since the first primate lab was set up in 1940’s. It has always been a contentious issue, however the problem of animal experimentation really became prominent when animal and monkey testing reached a peak during the 1980’s, and evidence was released of animals be mistreated. It was revealed that experiments were being conducted where monkeys were given drugs that could potentially cause pain, but were not being anaesthetised, for fear it would ‘interfere’ with the results of the testing. This was around the time when the ‘Animal Rights Movement’ started to build momentum, and the rights of animals were discussed and debated on a regular basis. It was this that sparked the argument on whether animal testing was morally right, and if it was ethical to perform such experiments on monkeys, and animals in general. Many people have opinions on animal testing. Whether or not we, as humans, should test medicines and treatments on non-human subjects has been argued for many years. According to a study performed by the Animal Welfare Act and Statistic Brain Research Institute, almost 20 million animals are killed annually due to abuse through animal testing. This proves the extreme tortures placed into the process. Opponents claim that animal testing is crucial for advances in medical and cosmetic fields. However, there are many drawbacks to these procedures. Animal testing should be banned because of the horrific tortures placed into the process.

Imagine being tied up, helpless for what is about to happen next. You don’t deserve it but they about to inject you and cut you open. No painkillers, no anesthetics, and everything that you are feeling will be the last feeling that you will ever feel. Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, using cosmetics, and going to circuses and zoos. Most humans have bought pets from pet shops, kept many birds and guinea pigs in cages, worn wool and silk clothing and gone fishing, Humans never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. They are put in conditions that most humans will never feel. Why? Only for the reason that they are the foundation of all research that scientists want to conduct to create cures and treatments as well as for entertainment purposes.

The animals that researcher used for testing are mice, pig, cat, dog, monkey, and others. They were suffering alive by human being. Think about what if animal treated us like the way we treated them, we will open our mind. Animal have feelings like us and they should treat with respect. Animals were used to develop anesthetics to prevent human pain and suffering during surgery. Yes, animal testing helps many human life, but can we save their lives using human? It is not fair for them to be use by human as we live on the same planet. Moreover, animal testing is harmful and painful for any kind of animal to endure. Yet, animal testing happened many years ago and until now. The animal lovers fight hard to prevent animal testing. Last couple years, the percentage of animal testing in the United Kingdom has decreased. Scientist used them for medical research and to study about it. Physician try testing the animal before touching any human being. Now a day, people have different beliefs about using the animals to test them. Some people will agree with testing animal, but some will disagree with it. Especially today generation, new technology were made so they try to use less animal testing. Instead of using living creature, we should use technologies to help us find out what we need to do. Therefore, animal testing should not be use in lab under any circumstances.
