Should Columbus Day Carry On? Columbus Day should absolutely carry on for many different reasons. Christopher Columbus is the man who gave culture to America for everyone. I don't agree with his ways of discovering America including murdering and “stealing the land”, but he is the one who made America, America. Although many of the people in America may think that Christopher Columbus did more dreadful actions than positive, Columbus is the man who brought many cultures to the Americas, made the lives of many of the Americans that live here today, and he is what made America possible. Columbus Day should still be celebrated because he is the man who brought many cultures to the Americas. Christopher Columbus brought many cultures to the Americas including Native Bahamian food and food from the Taino. This had food such as, maize, beans squash, and seafood. All of these different kinds of food were very different for Columbus and his crew, but it is what made America’s food based around this culture. America would absolutely would not have as much culture as it has today without Christopher Columbus.

Everyone in America is able to live there because of Columbus and his crew. What if America was never discovered until the 2000’s? What if the people that discovered America was corrupt and set the many lives of America in danger? Christopher Columbus did the exact opposite of these scenarios which is that he provided for the citizens and gave them a good life to live in. Christopher Columbus is known for killing and “stealing” the land of the Native Americans. These would include the Tiano tribe. This is of course not a good idea for Columbus, but whether or not he killed them he is still the man who made the people of America possible to even live in these kinds of
In the United States, there are many holidays that are celebrated by its citizens. Some of these holidays consist of individuals taking the day off from work and school, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s Day. During these days off, individuals have the chance to reflect on the day itself, and rejoice on the purpose of the holiday. Every holiday has a distinct and positive meaning towards the United States and its people, but there is one holiday in particular that is controversial in this aspect- the celebration of Christopher Columbus- Columbus Day. This controversy is JJJJJJ because even though Christopher Columbus had a big role in discovering America, he also was a terrible human being who tortured many. In my opinion, I believe that the celebration of discovering America should continue to be celebrated. Although, the holiday should be shifted from honoring Columbus, to instead celebrating the discovery of the United States of America by the indigenous people who were already settled in our land.
When you think of Columbus what comes to mind? A hero? A villain? Most people think he is a hero, but many do not think of the things he did to people such as slavery, beatings, raping, etc. He is most known for discovering America, but he only got to the Bahamas. Columbus was an Italian explorer that sailed the ocean blue in 1492. Columbus Day should not be celebrated because of the awful things that don’t make up for the discoveries that Christopher Columbus did.
The spirit and values of a nation are reflected in the nation’s heroes. Christopher Columbus has been regarded as an American hero since 1792. Every year Columbus Day is held on the second Monday in October to honor the man and his legacy. However, many people debate whether or not Columbus Day should be celebrated. I believe that Columbus Day should be celebrated in the United States because he opened up the New World to Europe, inspired a spirit of exploration and adventure that still lasts today, and he showed the importance of diversity and understanding of different cultures.
Columbus was an italian explorer who took four voyages across the atlantic ocean. Columbus day should be celebrated because he brought attention to america, its history as one of the oldest holidays. He brought attention to america because of its legacy, discovery of america, and having no change in growth in the population for thousands of years. It also had a great history because of the reason it started, why it was honored, and because of how many years it's been celebrated.
We celebrate Columbus Day every year since 1937. He traveled from Spain to North America trying to find the Northwest passage on August 3rd, 1492. He failed to find the passage ,but instead he found new land. People think as him as a hero ,but most people haveńt heard of the things he had done. People now of today are still debating whether or not if he should have a holiday. Celebrating Columbus Day shouldn't happen. He did horrible things to the natives, children, and countless other people. He shouldn’t have a holiday as it will be shown multiple times and again.
Some say that Columbus Day shouldn't be a holiday or that the name should be changed, I believe that we should get rid of the holiday. When you are little, you are taught Christopher Columbus discovered America and he's a good person; however, in reality, none of that is true. Columbus didn't discover America, he found some islands in the Caribbean like Haiti and Cuba. In addition, he treated the Natives there with harsh cruelties. Columbus also brought over diseases that lead to the death of many natives because they weren't exposed to measles, influenza, small pox. “Christopher Columbus introduced two phenomena that revolutionized race relations and
Columbus Day shouldn 't be a holiday anymore because all the Indians he enslaved and killed during his voyage. Columbus had made a promise to bring back slaves, gold, copper, and girls to be used for sex. According to A Patriot 's History ... about 56 million people were killed
America should still celebrate Columbus Day, even though he was in charge for killing thousands of innocent people he still did have the right idea and stuck with it to find new land and gold to make spain richer, himself too. He had to beg and beg for the king and queen to give him ships for along time, 1 year exactly, once he was granted it he put so much time, his whole life, to find what he didn't know was actually real or there. Even though Amerigo Vespucci found the actual land, Columbus was the one who had the right idea and gave Vespucci the idea to go searching for it. Without Columbus no one would have found it or even knew it was there. Some people think that it shouldn't be counted because he did get innocent people killed, many
Columbus Day is labeled in The United States of America as a whole day to celebrate Christopher Columbus founding America. Kids across America love Columbus Day because they have the day off from school. People who work in Federal Offices get a day off as well, but some are not as happy with the day as the children are.
Have you ever met someone who wasn’t who you thought they were? Maybe you shouldn’t trust only one source. Textbooks often only show one side of the story. New evidence proves that Columbus is not who he seems. Due to this information, Columbus Day should be changed.
Columbus in the New world. America should not continue to celebrate Columbus Day because it brought destruction to Native Americans, provokes and discriminates Native Americans and Columbus never really discovered the Americas. It brought destruction to Native Americans by destroying them completely in the Caribbeans after two decades, punishing them in terrible ways and bringing slavery to them. It hurts Native Americans today through culture, racism and emotionally. And Columbus never really discovered the New Lands since America was not close to empty, he already had knowledge of “New Lands” and he was possibly wasn’t even the first non-american to reach the
We should not celebrate Columbus day. We should not celebrate columbus day because columbus did not find amaria first people were already living there. In the article, It states, while others may have reached America before him. If people got there before columbus then he did not discover america. Most people celebrate columbus day because he discovered america if he did not discover america why should he get a holiday. columbus just found land he did not even go in america he just found land that already had people on it. In the text it states, if Columbus knew the United States had a holiday honoring him -- even though he never actually set foot in any of the now superpower's 50 states. Why should we celebrate some one who did not even step
Columbus Day should be a day of remembrance for the Native American people, instead of a day of celebration for the historical beginning of America. The Europeans came to America and claimed that they discovered the land. But the truth was that there were Native American people living in America way before the Europeans arrived. The Europeans oppressed the Native Americans.
Columbus Day should not be abolished as a national holiday, because Columbus overcame obstacles to arrive in America (Document E). To begin with, Columbus sailed over an unknown sea, without knowing what was on the other side. If it wasn’t for Columbus’ bravery, America would still be unknown to most of us. Second, he made a great proficiency in geography, astronomy, and drawing, as they were necessary to his favorite pursuit of navigation (Document B). Finally, Columbus was the greatest, because he accomplished the most against the highest odds (Document E). In conclusion Columbus overcame obstacles to find America, so we have to show Columbus some appreciation.
When I was younger , I was taught that Christopher Columbus “sailed the ocean blue , in 1492”. I was taught to think of a hero ; The man who discovered America. Columbus day to me was just a day off , where I didn’t have to go to school. I feel that a fair amount of Americans today think of Columbus day the same way. I think very few people actually take the time
