Year-round school schedule can benefit the students and the school. My opponents may believe it should not go year round because they feel it it takes away family time. I believe school should be year-round because of changes in our society, teacher and student stress reduction, and academic achievement. To begin with, when public schooling first became available to students, our society was mainly agricultural and children were needed during the summer months to help at home with chores and field work. Today’s society is a technological society and there is no longer a demand for children helping on the farm during their busy time. Many students spend their summer at home alone while parents work. Another reason to change the school schedule is to help reduce the stress for the teachers and students. "Mary Brown, a middle-school teacher in Wake County (where three-week breaks occur every nine weeks), says she doesn't see that as a problem at her school. "Our schedule offers the kids a break from school right when they need it," she says. Earlier this year, after their first three-week break, she says, the kids seemed refreshed. "They didn't have the bored, glazed-over look of kids who had been in school for weeks on end with no break in sight." Last and most important is keeping the students on track academically .Long summers are known to cause "summer slide," or the decline of academic skills and knowledge over the course of the extended vacation, according to the National Summer Learning Association, but it affects all children in some way. By taking away any sort of long break from school can improve …show more content…

Schools are facing many issues today. Some are facing the debate about whether to keep standardized tests or not. Other schools are worried about academic performance. But others are worried about when kids should be in school. One issue that schools face today is what kind of school schedule there should be throughout the year. With the long break of summer, many people prefer the short breaks of year round schools. Year round schools, can actually benefit students in the long run. There should be year round schooling because it can help students learn more and forget less, other classes are included and childcare is provided, teachers get more time to plan and teach lessons.
Students in high school can not have summer jobs when their school is year round because they only have short times out of school. (Scholastic 4) Summer jobs are very important for high school students wanting to continue their education. It is also extremely hard for students who play sports outside of their school, because the schedules are different than nine month schools. Students look forward to their summer vacations because it provides them with a definite finish to the school year. . Students work hard all year to enjoy their three months of relaxation. Goal oriented students work for the finished product in May when their school year is over. After the students three month break they come back to school refreshed and ready to continue their education. Having no definite end to the year forces students to become burned out on school, causing their grades to
As a student who use to attend a year-round school, all schools should become year-round. Year-round education will be an improvement for students who have never been in a year round school. There are roughly 3,000 schools enrolled to Year-Round Education and more than 2 millions students in those Year-Round schools in the United States. Year-Round schooling would help students cut down on the amount of stress they develop throughout the year. When having a long 3 month summer break you will forget a lot of information that teachers had taught; but if you was to go to school for 9 weeks and get out for 3 weeks to come back to school and start the next 9 weeks of school. More counties should have year-round school to prevent students from dropping out. It is proven that less students drop out that go to year-round school instead of regular.
Have you ever heard of all year round schools? I know I have. All year round schools are schools that is all year long. My opinion of all year round schools is a yes but also a no. Yes because year round schools have kids learn more and the children also get to be educated. NO because kids also need to have summer vacation, but kids need to have breaks from school not 2 weeks at each month off. Students need to get out there in the world and experience new things. Not be in school all the time. This is why I think my opinion is yes and no. I’m going to give reasons on what year round schools are all about on how they operate, what the benefits are, and the negatives/drawbacks.
They also say that the breaks refresh students. The latter can't be true; the article from Scholastic says that students think the breaks are disruptive. As for the first so-called “advantage”, the article by NEA states that “... [A]lthough one of the main reasons for switching to year-round school is to improve student achievement, there is no concrete proof that students improve academically.”(NEA). That means switching to a year-round schedule is like taking a blindfolded leap off a cliff: no one really knows what’s at the bottom. Florida can’t afford to make the dire mistake of switching. This school system shouldn’t buy the claims. Of course, if they do switch, no one will have enough money to buy
Summer vacation to kids means sports, vacation, netflix, hanging out with friends and overall just having fun. It distracts students when they’re waiting the entire last month of school for their summer, no one pays attention to their final exams. Another problem is that the summer tends to leave students confused when coming back to school the following September. They’ve completely forgotten the material from the previous school year, that the teachers spend weeks reviewing. It’s pointless for teachers to repeat it, valuable class time is being wasted. Having shorter breaks spaced throughout the year allows the students to relax but maintain their good marks. The break is long enough for them to finally ‘breathe’ but isn’t long enough to forget all the material they’ve learned. This enables the teachers to resume right where they left off, it’s the best strategy for the education of students, especially when this is the biggest
Summer break is the time for students and teachers to relax and rejuvenate for the upcoming school year. If there are only short breaks, it might “not be enough to offset the ongoing stress” teachers face with preparing lessons and grading. (Seattle PI). Students and teachers alike look forward to summer where they can have fun and time to themselves. Also, not all learning comes from a classroom. During summer, kids can be exposed to art and culture. They can spend time finding their hobbies or devote their time to a sport or extracurricular activity. Those experiences can never be recreated in a classroom.
Kids going to school usually dont want to be there or would not want to be there for longer than they have to. I feel that doing year round school would not be healthy or good for kids. Reasons why I believe this schedule change should not occur is, the time frame, the boredom, and the change.
“Student Note & Comment: The Ten-month School Year: Are We Ignoring Educational Research in Order to Preserve Summer Vacation? Finding a Compromise between Educational Advancement and Over-Schooling”, by Mary O’Sullivan, tackles the issue of year-round schooling. She presents the idea of year-round schooling in a good light, arguing the benefits of having it. The author suggests that teachers will have better communication with students and parents, that the current system in which we give students time off is inefficient, and provides its own rebuttals for the other side of the issue’s points, such as family time being harder to find, low-income families finding difficulty in keeping their kids in school, and other points.
Do you want to go to Myrtle Beach when it costs less during September? With more breaks out of school, you can. Year-round school can be confusing for families that travel a lot. Instead of having about eleven weeks off, you get three seperate periods off of school. From personal experience, I did better when I got a little time off from school. When kids have more time off from school, they can talk to their friends out of school, instead of in class. The new schedule will make it easier for parent to plan vacations for the family. This is why I think schools should be year round with more breaks to improve education.
Firstly, summer vacation is way too long, and we should instead have vacation time spread throughout the year. One reason why we should do this is because a long period of time away can,and does, cause stress for many students when they start a new school year. It is very common for students to forget a lot of the information that they learnt in the previous year over summer vacation. Teachers
Such as, they argue that there is no conclusive benefits of year round or extended school. Although some might believe this according to Tracy Hueber it has been found that the schools truly are helping students, “The research also indicates that when year-round schooling has resulted in higher academic achievement, the schools in question are usually doing more than just rearranging the school calendar. These schools are also providing remediation and enrichment for students during the breaks so that students have opportunities to relearn material, practice skills, catch up, or experience non academic enrichment activities continuously throughout the year (McMillen, 2001).” Another issue people may consider, is summer programs will suffer. While this might be true, students need to prioritize their values, and education should be at the top. Students shouldn’t worry about going to a summer camp when they can have the opportunity to enrich their education and be more successful in their futures. Lastly, a counterclaim many authorities believe is that no matter how long of a break the student has they will forget the information, but having a shorter break will help the students remember information. Shorter more frequent periods of breaks will help students understand and learn much more do to the limit of time the brain has to forget before being reminded
With the year-round schooling schedule, students are able to have better focus when coming back to school and remember information learned from the past school year. With multiple breaks throughout the year instead of a multiple month long summer vacation, it offers more constant
Over the course of a typical U.S. summer vacation, which is approximately two and a half months long, students can lose precious weeks and months of learning. According to Oxford Learning, “2.6 months of math skills, and two months of reading skills are lost over the summer” (“Summer”). The loss of information and skills over summer vacation is not only detrimental to students, but also negatively affects teachers, who must adjust the curriculum to compensate. The same study by Oxford Learning also concluded, “Six weeks in the fall are spent re-learning old material to make up for summer learning loss” (Summer). The illogical set-up of the agrarian American school year is not only inefficient, but it also produces achievement gaps between different demographics within the country. According to Motoko Rich’s article, “To Increase Learning Time, Some Schools Add Days to Academic Year,” during the summer break, “Students — particularly those from low-income families — tend to forget what they learned in the school year. Getting back to school early, supporters of a longer calendar say, is one of the best ways to narrow an achievement gap between rich and poor students” (Rich). The achievement gap created in the current system causes countless students to suffer through losing and having to relearn skills and
To operating expenditures (e.g., personnel costs, electricity)."(Skinner 7) This decrease in money shows that Year Round Education helps save costs. Also, Brigid Schulte said that "A 10-week summer meant that my husband and I staggered our work schedules, shoved our kids in camps, set up carpools, cobbled together babysitters and imposed on neighbors and friends whenever one piece of our elaborately jury-rigged schedule fell apart." The frantic search for childcare during traditional summer shows that Year Round Education saves money. All in all, Year Round Education cuts costs for parents and
