The azure-blue and golden-yellow banner that heralds City Hall visitors often goes unnoticed. Yet, for over a century, the Philadelphia Civic Flag has been dutifully at work representing the municipality.
At the center of the Philadelphia Civic Flag are two women — “Peace,” on the left, is holding a scroll, the other, “Plenty,” is on the right with a basket of fruit — their feet wrapped in a ribbon reading “Philadelphia Maneto,” or, as translated, "Let Brotherly Love Continue." The city’s motto comes from the New Testament — Hebrews 13:1 — and are said to have been uttered by the last of the Penn's visiting Philadelphia in the 19th century. The seal's blue and gold are the city's colors. Blue the color of the heavens, stands for aspiration. In the 1789 version of the seal, Peace holds a scroll containing William Penn’s plan for the city, Plenty a cornucopia overflowing with produce. Today, the familiar emblem is imprinted in the center of the flag also dons the Philadelphia Police Department’s uniforms and city vehicles. The crest will be celebrated as City officials will formally proclaim March 27 as Philadelphia Civic Flag Day.

The united states flag has been a big part of history since the beginning. patriotism also played an important part in the war. Betsy Ross made the first american flag. The flag has changed quite a bit since the design of the flag. For example the number of stars.
“ The American flag remains a living piece of history and a source of pride and unity for all Americans. The Stars and Stripes embodies the very qualities that make our nation great: liberty, justice, freedom, love of country and national purpose.” and once again just stated here this shows how important the flag means to every single American citizen in every form of our first
Grey uniforms, so often pierced with bullets from the other side, were proudly donned by the men of this nation from 1861 until 1865. These men fought tirelessly and honorably for their beliefs, and throughout each battle, carried the battle flag of the Confederacy. Throughout the Civil War, this flag took six different forms, for design flaws led to confusion on the battlefield. Each soldier, standing tall, did not fight for a flag, but under it. As an emblem of courage and honor, and a representation of their way of life, the “Rebel Flag” still stands as a symbol of pride in the southern United States. South Carolina’s contest of whether or not to permanently lower the flag flying over state grounds has aroused the question of the true meaning of the “Navy Jack” banner. American history has lent endless resources to the discovery of this meaning. The causes of the war, the history of the Confederate Flag’s origin, the truth about racism and slavery, and the disproving of supposed offensiveness of a piece of cloth all play an integral role in the argument opposing the flag’s removal.
The American flag is one of the most recognizable symbols this country has today. As children, we learn in school to cross our heart with our right hand and recite the pledge of allegiance to the United States of America, while facing the flag, a beloved symbol. As a soldier in the United States Army, I proudly wear a flag as a part of my Army Combat Uniform (ACU). It is worn by soldiers like me to show the love of country, honor and commitment to this great nation. It is cherished by veterans who have fought for this country, and families of the fallen soldiers cherish it because it is
When Margaree Mitchum sees the stars and stripes waving atop a flagpole, she feels more than ordinary patriotism.
The confederacy is dead. The Civil War is long over, and the United States has experienced much growth and development since its end, much of this due to the outcome of the war. A new, united America flourished throughout the late eighteen hundreds gaining a great deal of power through high levels of commerce and trade. There is no doubt that America is better off now because of the outcome of the War between the States. However, many of the symbols of the Civil War remain very active in the present world; they are very much alive and charged with meaning and power. Probably the best known among all of these symbols is the Confederate Battle Flag. The “rebel flag” has taken on
Next, let us look at the eagle, which is a symbol of power and liberty as it sits on top of the globe its majestic wings spread. Below the shield says Excelsior a Latin word for ever upward, (a motto for the New York state) Excelsior means to aim high, to fulfill goals and dreams.
The Civil War is considered by many to be a blemish in the history of the United States. Flying the Confederate flag is like boasting a constant symbol of the disturbing division between the United States and the South during the Civil War, the division between the majority and the minorities, and a division between the white and black (Lozada). According to the Pensacola News Journal, in Milton, Florida, the City Council remains divided about whether the Confederate flag should remain on the city’s official seal and continue to fly downtown. The symbols have been temporarily removed, and the final fate of the Confederate flag in Milton will be decided by the council in September (Lagarde). As the city and its residents try to move forward as a part of the United States of America, voting to keep the flag on the seal and in public display downtown would be a step backward toward segregation and
The first state flag was actually shown and presented by South Carolina stamp act protesters in 1765. The banner that the protesters displayed did indeed have not one but three white crescents on a blue background.
The Oklahoma flag has changed over three times, the last two being smaller changes. The first Oklahoma flag was created in 1911; it honored the American flag by using its colors. It was a white star edged in blue on a field of red. Inside the star is the number 46, referring to when the state came into the union in 1907 as the 46th state. This flag flew from 1911-1925 until it started to retain disfavor during the Russian Revolution in 1907. The red flag and single star resembled the Russian flag and was associated with Communism.
This county means a lot to me and most of this country. Andrew Abramson talks about patriotism and what actions he thinks should and shouldn't be done towards our flag. On the one hand, Abramson is right to say it is
One of the most popular myth is that the “Battle Flag” represents the CSA. The actually truth is that it did not they changed the flag three times and never officially declared that as the “CSA National Flag”. The first flag was changed due to the similarities to the USA. The second was modified due to the likeness to the flag of truce. And the third was the one that was adopted. But it is not the flag we have, today so the “Stars and Banner” is not the actual Flag that represented the “CSA” so nobody can argue the fact that it was.
The Star - Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key as he watched his fellow Americans stand strong in their darkest hour. For over twenty four hours Fort McHenry was bombarded by British Navy, but the American troops fought, and so did their families. The Americans rallied around the singular flag that stood high in the fort, and a flag that was a target for the British armada. They planned to destroy the flag to disrupt moral, but the Americans refused to let it fall. They used that singular flag as motivation, and motivation that eventually won them the battle. The flag still holds the same purpose today. To remember those who have fought, or are currently fighting in our armies. It also serves as a source of pride, motivation, and patriotism towards our country. Knowing what our flag means to our history and our country, we can’t possibly keep letting our countries source of pride be disrespected by those attempting to promote their own cause. Are nations athletes that choose to display their displeasure with our nation’s current state, and disrespect what our flag means for our country.
In the article,” Don’t Mess With the Stars and Stripes”, Leepson uses Logos to make his argument more reliable. He says,” No. 1 A national symbol looms large in the social, political and emotional hearts and minds of millions of Americans. The logos technique he used when he stated this was definition because he is making a claim about the meaning of something. Saying this, he is making a statement saying that the flag and the national anthem are important and gives people a feeling of emotion. Also, another way Leepson uses logos is when he states,” The flag and “The Star-Spangled Banner” — which is nothing if not an ode to the flag — are de rigueur elements of every type of political event and nearly every sporting event from Little League
