When it comes to the time period between the movie and the play there are many things that are different. One of the things that are different is that in the movie they use guns instead of swords. This gives the impression that the movie is set in more modern times. Another thing that was different in the movie was the city of verona. In the play it was a 13th century italian city but in the movie it was a more modern american metropolis. The affects the viewer will have to the changes will be terrible as people would be expecting it to be spot on with the play. The director probably made these changes in order to give the play a more modern look but ended up failing miserably. The scene that was the most different was the fight at the beginning.
Around 8 years later in 1994 the Cornerstone Theater Company staged a performance of Everyman in the Santa Monica Place mall. This is production starts off with an upper-hand because it takes place amongst all the material things that Everyman realizes he should not have been so obsessed with in his lifetime. This play opens up with the introduction of Death to the audience. “Death suddenly appears amid swirling fog in front of a toy store.” (Collins) This is an exquisite portrayal of Death because the audience needs to feel the mystery and fear that is often associated with death. When seeing Death the audience should feel the same way they feel when they see a villain in superhero movies, they should know that something bad is getting ready
For instance, one simple change from the play to the movie is the script, the script is a very important part of writing, and acting it out can change how people view that character or just how it gives the story a different mood for a little bit. In the play, Our Town, Mrs. Soames remarks, “Doesn’t she make a lovely bride?” and George replies with, “I do” (Wilder, 51). Just that simple joke changes the mood for a second; it lets you take a break from the anxiety of marriage and the wedding and just giggle. It is nice when the author throws in a joke here and there, especially when it’s a school book; you're focusing so hard on trying to find the theme and making sure you catch all the information that you need that a little break can help
I think that the movie is more descriptive than the written part.In the written part it did not give inought detail in it. The movie had a lot of sound effects and I think sound effects are better. Sound effects are more illiterate it pulls you into the movie it feels like you are actually in the movie.
The movie and the play are made in two different time periods. Since the movie is in a more recent time period, the clothes worn by the characters in the movie are more modern. The clothes in the play are more elegant and reflect the 16th century era.
The shakespeare's play was designed to adapt to any audience altough Baz luhrmann's film appealed young viewers, because the film has altered the shakespeares play to making it more modern and action packed. The film was set in a fictional city located in maimi in 1996, verona beach is the centre of a warfare against two wealth and powerful families. However Franco zeffirelli's form of shakespeare's play is more bitter and mature and has a powerful allure towards an adult. Zeffirelli's cinematic play of Romeo and Juliet is set in old italy back in the 1800s, zeffirelli decided to stick with shakespears original play altough there were some difference between the play and film they were still based on the same story/tale. Because zeffirelli used the same techology (in movie) as they used in shakespeare's times, this was one of the things that maked the film similar to the play. The shots that luhrmann has used, has higher quality because of the advanced techology. Firstly, the film starts with a television in the centre and the camera zooming in as a newsreader reads the prologue, which makes the the prologue more interesting and want to find out more. On the other hand the
Yet in the 1996 you see Benvolio Montague (Romeo’s cousin) leave the bathroom at the petrol station and pulls out his gun which has “Sword” carved in on the right side of the gun. The director then repeats the western style which adds to the tention between the two riving families. The camera then changes to show Sampson getting banged on the head with a handbag, the rhythm and “bong” noise associated could portray to be cartoonish/comic like. In the Zeferelli version, the original Shakespearean dialogue is spoken and may be the reason why many people think it’s uninteresting movie. With the Baz Lurhmann version they cut out several sections of the original dialogue and put a lot into it making the script more interesting as he modenised it in the way that would appeal to the present day audience.
One evident difference between the two films is setting. In the older movie, it is clear to see that the story takes place in the ancient city of Verona, and the film shows how Verona appeared at the time that the play would have taken place. However, in the more recent version of the film, the setting is fairly dissimilar from what the audience pictures while reading the play. The setting is completely modernized, making everything in the city look newer and updated - for example, the presence of gas stations for cars that would not have even existed during the time of the original movie creates a modern setting. Although the setting is altered from movie to movie, the characters in both remain quite similar.
The organization and the setting in the play and the movie are different. In the play they have a flashback then start off in 1945 in a dusty and broken down secret annex. Also introducing the
With MTV-style cinematography, fast-paced action, and heart wrenching romance, Baz Luhrmann takes a modern approach to this Shakespearean classic. While keeping the original text (these actors recite exact lines from the play!), he makes a few changes to modernize the story; Verona, Italy, is now Verona Beach in Florida, the Capulets and Montagues are corporate gangs (think “West Side Story”, thirty years later), and they tote around guns in place of swords.
Both the movie and the play was still set in the modern age they turned the Romeo and Juliet love story set in the late 1500’s to a love story in the modern age with conflicting lives one family against the other and the one thing that kept them together was there love for each other. One thing that both 1996 and 2014 versions have in common was they both seemed to be a part of a gang and had motor vehicle in 1996’s version they rode around in cars like Cadillac’s nice cars like that and the 1968 Romeo rode in on a motorcycle in the first scene. Another thing that all three movies had in common all started with a fight of some sort be a shootout or a sword fight or just a brawl and witch all got in trouble with higher superiority, but on to the 2014
Scream Factory’s double feature Blu-ray releases are a great way to enjoy two movies for a fraction of the price (unless you’re buying from Amazon Canada, in which case you pay double the price). Their latest double feature release is probably one of the better double features lately, giving us two highly enjoyable movies by the way of Destroyer and Edge of Sanity. The Blu-ray itself doesn’t feature any special features save for a trailer, but the movies entertainment values more than make up for any features that are lacking. With that being said, let’s continue on and see what the two films are all about…
In the case of interping and showing what Shakespeare would have wanted to see I think Franco Zeffirelli had shown it better. He showed what the characters were truly like and how they lived. Franco’s set was during the renaissance period in the city of Verona, while Baz Luhrmann was in the present day. The director used the setting to make it a more serious with themes of romance and tragedy. I feel as if that was what Shakespeare was going for to make it a serious topic as it has a powerful message. Baz Luhrmann was creating a different point of view on the story as if it was told today. Though Shakespearean plays had outfits of the current day in their time, Shakespeare wrote it for medieval or early renaissance times. Franco was showing a current day for that time showing the true origins of the story.
Between the play and movie of Romeo and juliet there are many differences, and one of the ones that I noticed most was the time period. In the play there was Elizabethan clothing, obsolete architecture, and different types of weapons, but in the movie there were modern day buildings, clothing with glitter all over, and new transportation. Another difference is the overall mood of both the movie and play. The movie seemed much more upbeat than the play, Because I got to watch their facial expressions; provided by the character. When I watched the movie I could really see them fall in love, and had a much bigger impact on me than the play did, because when I read the play I had to use imagery, but in the movie it was just there for the watcher
In the play someone comes out and says the prologue but in the movie, the prologue is played on a TV screen. This shows that this is something big because not only is it on a TV screen, it’s being said on the news. When something is on the news, it’s usually this big thing that happened. So playing it on a TV is showing something big is going to happen. The maker of this movie probably put it on a TV screen because the time frame their setting this movie in, that would most likely be where people would hear about what’s going on, and the prologue is what is going on. Also, in the play when Friar Lawrence is sending his letter to Mantua so Romeo knows what’s going on, he sends a messenger doesn’t get to go to Mantua because of the Black Plague. In the movie, however, Friar Lawrence goes to a post office to send his letter and his letters aren’t going through. During the time period this movie is taking place, people don’t have messengers like they do in the time period the play is taking place. People use post offices to send their letters. This would be comical to the viewer because the people in the movie are still speaking Shakespearean language but they are doing modern things, such as using a post office.
Many, of the characters were acting like other character, for example Benvolio was acting more like Mercutio by picking the fight with the Capulets. The Prince is a policeman and is tired of the fighting between the two households.Paris was less flirty Juliet in the movie than in the play. Romeo was just stuck on Juliet’s face because of the love felt for her. Juliet was less afraid of killing herself that when the Friar try to stop her, she put the gun on him and told him to find another way for her to be with Romeo.
