Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska to Earl and Louise Little. His father, a minister and devout Christian, was known for being an outspoken follower of the black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. Garvey’s message promoted the “back-to-Africa” movement that encouraged African Americans of the time to sever ties with
Who is Malcolm X? Answers tend to vary by person but in the “Autobiography of Malcolm X”, it really delved into the pivotal details of his life and readers like myself, went on an enthralling metaphorical journey to see the intriguing development of him as a child, a young adult, a convict, a follower, and ultimately a leader. For starters, Malcolm X was not born with the infamous and famous X. His birth name was Malcolm Little and the innocent Malcolm Little was very belittled (pun intended) in majority of his social environments. At a young age, he experiences the pain of losing his father. In retrospect, his father was just a dust in the wind. Malcolm’s dad was like many other socially active black males, who became inevitable victims that usually were murdered, lynched, burned, etc by the white men in their area. Now, to lose one parent is already tough for many individuals but Malcolm was only to be hammered with more bad news. His mother was sent away by government workers to a mental institution because his house was deemed “unstable” (this kind of stuff happened daily to many black families in similar housing situations like Malcolm was in). But Malcolm directed his energy elsewhere. He ends up taking initiative in school and whilst excelling, he ended up loving many aspects of education in America (or so he thought). He climbed his way to become first in rank in his class and even became class president but his dreams was simply crushed by many individuals. One of
Malcolm Little commonly known as Malcolm X was born in Omaha Nebraska. Malcolm’s trouble has started before then even while he was in the womb of his mother. Clansman would often circle his house in search of his father who was a preacher who talked about the evils of the clansmen and wished for a day when African Americans will return to the ancestral homelands in Africa. In chapter 1 of the Malcolm X book I will describe his childhood has rough he seen his father killed been relocated to 4 or 5 different houses and at the end of it all his mother was killed. Malcolm little commonly known as Malcolm X have been through a lot in his upbringing. He was separated from his seven siblings and put into foster care Change would be one word to describe his childhood as he was in and out of schools and by the age of 13 he was in a reform school. The book takes a major shift when he heads out to Boston with his sister Ella. From here he tours the town and find other African Americans who are just like him. One in particular by the name of shorty becomes one of his closest friends. He introduces them to the locals and takes Malcolm under his wing. One thing in particular that Malcolm falls in love with is the Roseland Ballroom. With the help of shorty he gets a job as a shoe polisher. While doing this he falls in love with a new dance called the Lindy Hop. This ultimately leads to him quitting from shoe polishing in a short time because he cannot do both. However he only works there
In Malcolm X, Jason Hunter writes about the life, religion, death, and legacy of Malcolm X throughout his life time, 1925 to 1965. Hunter utilizes a combination of primary and secondary sources to explain the impact Malcolm X had on his time period, as well as the legacy left behind for the later generations. Though mainly using The Autobiography of Malcolm X, the author is able to highlight the details of X’s lifetime and legacy. To do this, the author makes use of chronological order, separating each chapter as if it is a section of X’s life. Each of the five main chapters are broken down into smaller subchapter for the smaller important details. Hunter starts off describing the early life and troubles X encounters, and end the book off
Malcolm begins to realize that all the white people surrounding him as constantly either indirectly or directly telling him that he does not belong in their world, and they would not let him in even if he was qualified, due to his color, and that was a popular thing for black role models in the 60's. At this point he knows he must leave this area and leaves his foster home to live with his sister in Boston. Although Malcolm finds work, they are dead end jobs and this leads him to have to earn money in less acceptable ways such as drugs, betting, and stealing. This is how many problems occur in poor communities today, due to the lack of
Malcolm X had a very interesting life and there were several aspects that affected his views of American society. In “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” by Alex Haley, the three main things that effected Malcolm’s life was his arrival in the city of Boston, the conk he received, and his brother Reginald. These three symbols changed his life forever. Also all of them were connected as well. Malcolm X, being from Lansing, Michigan, never expected his life to change as drastically as it did.
Malcolm X, Born name Malcolm Little, was born in Omaha, Nebraska on May 19, 1925. His mother was Louise Norton, which had eight children including Malcolm. His father’s name was Earl Little, who was a Baptist preacher and strong supporter of the Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. Before Malcolm’s fourth birthday, the family was forced twice to relocate due to death threats from the white supremacist organization, Black Legion. Despite their efforts to get away from them in 1929, the Legion burned their home down to ashes. After two years, Earl was killed and found laying on the trolley tracks in the town. The police ruled these events as accidents, the Little family was sure that the Black Legion were the people responsible for killing their father and husband. After this, Louise was put into a mental institution because of her emotional breakdown years after the death of her husband.
First, Malcolm X Experiences and nature of his relationship with the Whites was making money from them through providing services as an uneducated young hustler. He was looking for an opportunity to make money by any means. Malcolm X got a job from Small’s Paradise, (a famous Harlem club) as waiter however, when he was fired from Smalls Paradise for asking an Army spy for a prostitute, he moved naturally into the sorts of jobs he had been learning from Small's customers like selling marijuana, stickups, numbers running, and stealing. Malcom X said, “I was true hustler--- uneducated, unskilled at anything honorable, and I considered myself nervy and cunning enough to live wits exploiting any prey that presented itself” (pg. 125). The life of Malcolm was tough in Harlem for hustling, competing with thousands of drop-out school boys all hustling in the streets of the city of Harlem, just the way he was doing.
Malcolm X was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska as Malcolm Little to parents Earl and Louise Little. The Littles moved to Lansing, Michigan when Malcolm was an infant due to threats the family received from the Klu Klux Klan. This was because Reverend Earl Little was an early follower of Marcus Garvey, who preached black independance and self-respect (Altman, 197). Reverend Little died when Malcolm was only six years old after being hit by a streetcar. Malcolm always believed that this was a hate crime committed by whites. Many speculate that this is what originally caused Malcolm to distrust whites. Malcolm’s mother, Louise Little, was committed to the State Mental Hospital in Kalamazoo in 1939. Her exact illness is unknown (Mamiya).
My summary interprets the material in an objective stance by talking about Malcolm X, -and the way he educated himself. An example of this would be when I said “The way he taught himself was going through every page of a dictionary, and writing down every word and even punctuation mark on the page.” That explains how he studied and not my feelings about how he studied. Deciding what to put into my summary and what not to was depending on its importance. How I judged importance was by going through my annotations in my head without looking at the story, and the ones that I remembered were the most important because I recalled them. After that I looked over the story and read over my annotations and decided what other important things I left
Malcolm moves away from his family in Lansing, Michigan at fifteen years old after spending the summer in Boston, Massachusetts. Malcolm believes that he has much more potential than to stay in Michigan and have a dissatisfied life. While in Boston, he will stay with his half-sister Ella who tells Malcolm to explore the city before he ties himself down to a job. When he goes into the city, he sees how their are different types of black people. On Roxbury Hill where he lives, it is populated with ghetto black people who are poor and jobless which is towards the bottom of the hill. And at the top of the hill, he sees the Hill Negroes who were “breaking their backs trying to imitate white people” (Malcolm 42). While Malcolm searches for a job, he meets Shorty who brings him to the Roseland State
In the Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X he talks about how his career to become a preacher comes to be. Malcolm’s real name is Malcolm Little but started to adhere to different names throughout his life. Malcolm X was a African American and was conceived by his two parents Louise and Earl Little. Louise is Malcolm’s mom that has a white father that raped her black mother. Louise never met her dad and has the appearance of a white woman. Earl is a preacher of Marcus Garvey, which says that African Americans should leave America to the white people and go back to Africa. Malcolm’s family of eight children were always harassed by the Ku Klux Klan because of their father’s preachings. They were constantly on the move and always going to different places.
In his book, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Malcolm faced with adversity from the beginning of his life. Malcolm was born May 19th, 1925, during times of extreme racial violence and harsh discrimination . His family moved to Lansing, Michigan to avoid the persecution of local white groups, but they could not escape racial injustice. White supremacists burned Malcolm’s family home and murdered his father. Overcome with grief, Malcolm’s mother was confined to a mental hospital. Malcolm was then given to foster parents. He felt out of
