For my practicum, the agency I am involved with is the East Pikeland Township Police Department. This police department serves the Kimberton area which is adjacent to Phoenixville. Police officers have a variety of responsibilities to maintain while on duty. Their primary responsibility is to maintain peace and order within the community they are serving (DeLisi, 2010). With the important responsibilities that a police department possesses, it plays a vital role in the criminal justice system. Many people do not see the extent of what police officers do for their community. The media has a way of distorting the views people have. News channels and various television shows only broadcast what will get the attention of as many people as possible. Getting the attention of millions of people is sometimes easier by showing the negative situations. If the media started showing more of the positive situations that police officers were involved in, many people would start to see that police officers should be looked up to instead of feared. A police departments role for the community and the criminal justice system is skewed. A police departments role in the criminal justice system is providing public safety. One of the major duties a police department performs for the criminal justice system is law enforcement. Police officers contain the ability to arrest and detain violators of the law. This power is used to keep the community safe in contrast to what the media displays to
In the United States, there are city, county, state, and national police forces. They have very difficult and dangerous responsibilities. These public servants are required to perform many different jobs. They enforce laws and maintain order. They teach people how to help prevent crime and to protect themselves ( Mittleman, 2000). They offer assistance and take charge of many different situations such as car accidents, flooding, and hurricanes. Police
Another role that the police have is to foster good relations with the public. They have to do this in order to gain trust and understanding with the people that rely on them, to ensure that they can carry out the task they have to do and have the public on their side.
Police officers have played a major role in society by protecting us from crime. Their responsibilities include not only preserving the peace, preventing criminal acts, enforcing the law, investigating crimes, and arresting those who violate the law but also directing traffic, community relations work, and controlling crowds at public events.
Being a police officer is a tough job and some members of the public don’t understand the challenges faced every day and the complexities of the job. They also make judgments based on the negative perceptions seen in the
Police officers are a sign of protection, safety and justice. Their presence around a community is to help establish the feeling that the community is under watch all the time, helping some feel at ease, while making others feel tension and hatred. The past activities of a police force have left everlasting impressions in some people’s minds, making them feel that the police is out to get them, not help them, then pushing these feeling of animosity onto the next generation. This type of behavior is a continuous chain reactions, making the police out to be the bad guys, making the police work harder to prove that the past does not define the present or the future.
Most people do not personally interact with law enforcement. Without personal experiences, opinions tend to form based off of what is heard and seen. The media also plays a role in what stories get acknowledgement from citizens. Misconceptions about law enforcement are more likely to be formed when someone is not aware of went on in a confrontation from start to finish. Relationships between police and citizens could be improved with the help of media. If less biased and more factual information was released, the public may come to a more thought out conclusion of how they feel about police. Citizens should take it upon themselves to get all of the facts so that they can make an educated decision on their personal views. That way, they can be sure they know the entire story, rather than relying on information they got from media, should it be incorrect. If relationships with police are fixed, the divide between law enforcement and citizens would shrink and a more trusting relationship could
Police shootings has been catching the eye of the people, especially when they come to find out that an innocent individual was killed by a man in blue. The purpose of this paper is to explain what racial profiling is and how it has been a problem in the Criminal Justice System. Also, it will provide insight of how police officers are allowing racial profiling to affect guilt perceptions on an individual by providing examples of how it has been happening around the nation. Media likes to stir up more problems and instead of being informative they become more of a problem. Citizens are not aware that police officers are afraid of what is going on. The intent of Police Officers is to not harm someone but to protect the citizens from harm. This study will show that although there are some police officers who do use racial profiling as a method, most do not. They hypothesis of this study is to show that police officers do have racial biases, just like non-police officers.
One of the advantages that police have by getting them involved is that they have more resources available to help fight crime. When officers work the same communities day in and day out they get to know the people in the community and can get valuable information about questionable activities that are occurring in their neighborhoods and who the people are that are in question. Bonding with the people in the communities that they patrol also gives them a chance to find out what the people in the community expect from them and what their needs are. Once a bond is formed with the community the concerns can be addressed and then come up with most suited solutions for the problems and reduce fears in the
It seems as if all you hear in the news today is tragic deaths involving unarmed black men and white “trigger-happy” police officers. But is that really the case? Is this a race thing? The media has hand-picked the leading stories to share with you. We often ask ourselves, “were these shootings justified?” But during this time of heightened concern all around the world about policing, a more essential question might be “Were we justified in sending them?”
The attitudes toward police have drastically changed within the last 100 years. People used to see police officers as highly respectable and very influential people. When a police officer was around people felt as if they were safe. Unfortunately now day’s people have the wrong idea of police officer. When people see an officer their first instinct is that they are trying to catch them doing something wrong or that they are just out looking to arrest someone. That is a very false misconception and gives police a bad name. People see the 1% of officers who are bad to represent the other 99% this makes it hard for officers to do their jobs when they are really there to help protect the people. Attitudes have gone from
There are various different forms of police misconduct such as police corruption, use of excessive force, false arrests, obstruction of justice etc. Most forms police misconducts can be serious issues within the law enforcement and the criminal justice system. However this essay will focus on one type of police misconduct and that is the use of racial profiling. Over many years there has been a ton of studies and research done on racial profiling. In the studies and research racial profiling has been looked from various different angles. Racial profiling is suggested to be part of the police subculture and officers tend to regard this form of profiling to be part of their work, however it is sometimes hard to determine whether or not racial
The law enforcement officers include city police, sheriff’s office, Highway Patrol officers, and specialized police departments. These agencies help to enforce the law that the government has set forth. They are the ones that investigate crimes and collect evidence while also preserving it. These agencies are responsible for the apprehension of criminals. They also help to reduce and prevent crime while maintaining public order. Their main goal is to ensure that the community is safe. Throughout this whole process, the officers must “protect the rights and the freedoms of individuals” (Schmalleger, 2013, p.14.).
All it takes is one incident for the public to not trust the police. There are many examples of this. Especially recently, there have been many problems with the public mistrusting the police. From Rodney King, to Mike Brown, to Freddie Gray, the public has trusted the police less and less. It really is a sad thing. Police are put there to help you, keep you safe, keep the city running, and be your shoulder to cry on in time on need. Now, people trust the police less than anyone. Society sees the police as being more like a thug than an actual thug. The problem with police has become a race issue. Now if a black person is killed by a white cop, it blows up the world’s media. It is not just black people are getting mad about it. Many people
Community Police department is a systematic approach that allows police to immediately answer or respond to any concerns of the community. These police officers are the front line of duty and are positioned all around respected areas. Their typical job duties consist of providing public safety by maintaining order. They respond to emergencies, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws. Identify, pursue, and arrest suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts. They review facts of incidents to determine if criminal act or statute violations were involved. Render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries. Lastly they testify in court to present evidence or act as witness in traffic and criminal cases
Personally, I think the police force gets a little bit too much heat from the public. It’s a very tough job, and it feels like people will defend criminals just for the sake of hating police officers. For example, the problem of police officers shooting
