Pope Francis is the leader of the Catholic Church and exemplifies many different styles of leadership. Through his authenticity, openness, and ability to lead a society, Pope Francis is seen as a strong public leader not only within the Catholic Church, but within society as a whole. Since being named head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has earned a positive reputation among his followers. He has become known as The People’s Pope and has made it very clear that he does not want to be a Pope of talk; he wants to be the Pope of action. Through these actions, Francis has shown his servant leadership by putting all members of the Catholic Church before himself. He has instilled a new faith in the Catholic Church allowing his followers to grow and believe. He has also shown a very apparent transformational leadership style. Francis has stated a clear mission that allows for the Catholic people to follow his lead. He knows what he stands for and his followers see him in such a positive light; this allows him to have an incredibly strong influence in change.
This paper will discuss the background of Pope Francis, beginning with his early years and continuing to present day Pope along with discuss his reputation and accomplishments. It will also define servant and transformational leadership, as well as provide examples from Pope Francis to back up these leadership styles. Following the leadership styles will be personal recommendations for Pope Francis to improve
Growing up Catholic, I have always been fascinated by the Pope. This man is the head of my religion, so I was interested in learning the history behind the current Pope, Pope Francis, and his predecessors. I was also interested in finding out how the Pope’s role has changed over time and what each individual has done for the religion as a whole.
The Pope’s role in the church and the Vatican have not changed in a significant manner other than that his power has declined. The Vatican was built during the 4th century and then rebuilt again during the 16th century. The Vatican is the world’s second largest religious building and is above the tomb of St. Peter. Vatican city is the world’s smallest fully independent state. The name of the government in Vatican city is Holy See. The city itself is responsible for the safety of the Pope since 1506. All supplies go through a screening process and must be imported in. The Pope had absolute executive, judicial and legislative power. There is no way to pinpoint exactly when the Pope's power began to decline, but it was around the time when the
The contribution of Pope John XXIII has been profound, as many of his initiatives and actions are still resonating today. His acceptance of Jesus’ words “I came to save all nations.” Represented his motivation to do well and bring peace upon the world. He was an advocate of Christian unity, social justice, human rights and the promotion of world peace. It is through his development of the Second Vatican Council, his contribution to ecumenism and his empathy for humanity that Pope John XXIII made a significant impact upon the development and expression of Christianity.
Pope Francis did away with ornate and rigid traditions of previous popes. He restructured core Vatican institutions such as the clerical hierarchy and the banking system, in order to drive out corruption. His messages of simplicity and mercy were engrained in unselfish gestures, such as the washing of offenders feet, (something) , and (something), that helped bring Catholics back into the fold. Yet, for some Catholics, like Maureen Dowd, Pope Francis’ efforts have not changed the church enough.
Saint Francis of Assisi had a great childhood, but as he got older his father began to beat him. He lived the life of luxury, and was the the son of a very rich cloth merchant. He was born in Circa, Italy in 1181. He abandoned the life of luxury, for a life devoted to Christianity, and God. He was very devoted into living in poverty, and he rebuilt the Christian church. He is the patron Saint of ecology and animals. He wanted to go to the Christian church reportedly after hearing God’s voice. He insisted that this was his calling and his adulthood confirmed it.
He further explained that “the faithful ought not to think that just because priests preside over Mass that they are more important than the people who make up the church itself” (USA Today). Pope Francis is pushing for these reforms in the church because he believes that some of the old traditions in the church are incorrect and immoral and that something needs to change for the better.
Servant leadership is one of several models that have some basis in ethics, according to Northouse (2013), in this way servant leadership distinguishes itself from trait, path-goal or transformational models. The aim of this paper will be to examine on attribute of servant-leadership, describing how the principles might be applied, and the impact of such an approach, in a practical setting. The second part of this paper will evaluate servant leadership’s relationship with the Christian religion and ask whether the model is compatible with other belief systems.
Greetings, pope Leo. I believe I have some pointers for you and the Church. I believe you should follow them so your followers continue to follow you.
It seems that many have the idea that leadership is all about authority and power. This is seen both inside the church and outside as well, at least that has been this writer’s personal experience. The statement reiterated by Sampson (2011) drove home a major point and that is that leadership is more than simply demanding, commanding, or directing individuals under one’s control or authority, it has to do with one’s ability to influence others even when no apparent authority is present.
I will be analyzing the speech of Pope Francis to a Joint Session of Congress from September of 2015 in Washington, D.C. for my final rhetorical analysis. This speech is important because it addresses societal issues in the United States and the whole world such as poverty, religion, war, the environment, immigration, and gun laws. The pope not only addresses the issues, but also acknowledges many of the marvelous features of America. In this paper, I will provide a summary of research I found on the context of the speech, the speaker, the audience, and the effects the speech had on society.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio, more commonly known as Pope Francis, was elected Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church on 13 March 2013 , and since then has done much to change the lives of everyone he can for the better. Pope Francis has famously said “My people are poor and I am one of them” and has used this to guide his decision making on how the Catholic Church should change its focus to help those in need. He has done and changed much in order to change the current course of the Catholic Church and direct it back towards what it was originally meant to be: a communion of people that know and love God and pass this on the others. This brave new path that Pope Francis has set the Catholic Church on is summarized in his Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii
“In the thirteenth century, the Catholic Church reached the height of its political, intellectual, and secular power (322). ” The Pope Innocent III was very honest with his desire for power within
Referring to Dr. Laniak’s book, he concentrated on the three roles of shepherding – provision, protection, and guidance. I think these three roles should still be the central focuses for the Christian leaders today. However, it is also true that the concept of shepherding leadership becomes vague and sentimental sometimes; as a result, we see leaders have too much power and responsibility in today’s churches. In fact, this situation happens not only in the present, but also in all history. We can find complaining leaders in the Mosaic period; we can find leaders who did whatever they liked in the period of Judges; we see kings who did evil in the sigh of the Lord; we see arguments within the group of leadership in the early church; we see the
Saint Francis had made many sacrifices throughout his life. His biggest and most impactful sacrifice was his devotion to religion. I decided to choose this topic of Francis because I can relate to it in some ways. I have grown up in a house with two different religions. My mom is Christian and my father is Muslim. My parents have always told me do what you believe and I was never pressured into choosing a certain faith. Throughout my life thus far I have gone to many different pastors, and many different Imams,” Muslim pastor.” I devoted a lot of my time studying the two religions, so I can have a better understanding of the two and picking my faith. Francis also devoted time to Christianity, but he didn’t just devote his time he devoted his entire life to Christianity and to teach others about God.
"Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, Honorable members of the Congress, dear friends…” so begins Pope Francis’ speech addressing a joint session of Congress. Formally addressing his audience to begin his speech, and acknowledging the “land of the free and the home of the brave,” he received warm applause from the congress-people. The Pope’s intro then calls those listening to our shared responsibility for the common good, therefore setting up the rest of his speech nicely. From this introduction, the rest of the speech will talk about the responsibilities of those who lead our great nations. Throughout the rest of the speech, one can easily analyze the speaker, with plenty of content. Listening to the Pope speak, one can find portions he
