Every day 297 people in America are shot in murders, assaults, suicides, unintentional shootings, and police intervention. Everyday 89 people die from gun violence, 31 of those people are murdered. Today I'm going to be talking about the social justice issue of gun violence. Gun violence, death and injury from firearms is a major issue in all parts of our world. Gun violence continues to affect young people, lower-income people, and communities of color. This social justice and public health issue occurs in places all over the world, however it has become such an epidemic in the United States that it will result in gun violence being one of the main topics in the 2016 presidential election. There are many causes for gun violence, for example, in this day and age pop culture influence is the greatest cause of gun violence. Guns have also became more accessible and easy to obtain. Poor identification and treatment of mentally ill people is another significant cause for gun violence.

Gun violence has been around for centuries and there have been many mass shootings, homicides and suicides. There is always the argument on “do guns kill people” or “do people kill people”? What people really need to be looking at is the problem which is people stocking up on guns and not knowing how to properly handle them and all the mass shootings that are taking place. As a country, people need to be coming up with solutions instead of doing nothing.

Since 1982, at least sixty-two mass shootings have occurred, thirty-two of them since 2006. (Aronsen). Jared Loughner was sentenced to life in prison after shooting nineteen people in January of 2011. Last July, fifty-eight people were shot and twelve killed while watching the new Batman movie in a theater in Colorado. In December, twenty-six people were murdered, including twenty first-graders, in a Connecticut elementary school (Follman). The issue of gun violence only becomes relevant after a horrific event such as these, then fades from public concern after about two weeks. A trend analysis of juvenile homicide offenses shows that since the mid 1970's, the number of homicides in which no firearm was involved has remained fairly constant. However, homicides by juveniles involving a firearm have increased nearly threefold. In addition, during this same period, the number of juvenile arrests for weapons violations increased 117 percent. When guns are the weapon of choice, juvenile violence becomes deadly.

In the United States, over the past few decades, gun violence has increased massively, leading to over 10,000 gun-related incidents in 2015. The main cause of the massive amount of violence in the United States in recent decades is mainly because people who are in danger have no means to protect themselves. This is why guns should be more accessible for citizens, so that they can protect themselves in dangerous situations. Allowing citizens to conceal weapons would heavily decrease the amount of incidents that occur because innocent people were unable to protect themselves. Also, putting less control on guns would prevent crimes from even happening in the first place. If a criminal had intentions of committing a crime, they would be much less willing if they knew that they might possibly get shot trying to commit that crime. Thus, criminal activity and violent crimes will cease to continue at such high rates and more people will have the ability to protect themselves in dangerous situations.

In the article “ shooting our way out of a gun epidemic” (2017), Renee Graham claims that gun violence in America has reached another level. Graham supports her claim by making various references the the many mass shootings, comments made by our president and previous president. Renee explains that legislators should now regret voting to expand the right to carry concealed weapons. Graham goes on to say that after this vote by the house of representatives, the worst mass shooting in modern history in Las vegas and soon after a churchgoer in texas took place. I am astonished how Chicago implemented tough gun laws and the results were devastating. I expected the gun laws to attain more civil order and decreased the violence within the state. I do not understand how gun violence increased in Chicago and not in other states, where those other states did not bothered implementing strict gun laws. Were people upset overall, causing to increased violence in Chicago? I thought order equals control in society, however, this is not the case for Chicago. In this essay, I will be discussing the gun violence in America and I will be using different sources to help support my essay. I will be using three sources HBO Documentary “Violence: An American Tradition”, Amanda Marcotte’s “Overcompensation Nation: Toxic Masculinity and Violence.”, and Todd May’s “Is American Nonviolence Possible?”. I believe the gun violence in America comes because of the economic inequality, social status and, cultures. Gun violence is correlated to “toxic masculinity”. In her article, ‘Overcompensation nation’ Amanda Marcotte claims that gun violence in America can be correlated to a kind of over the top masculinity that’s toxic.

In 2015, 13,367 people lost their lives due to gun violence according to Gun Violence Archive. The Archive also states that out of that number, 693 were children from ages 0-11. We can all agree that there is indeed a problem that we have to address. The solution to that problem, however, has been debated by many. I believe the solution to this problem exists in three parts: Mandatory training and licensing along with more heavily secure gun storage, stricter regulations on the purchasing of a firearm—disabilities and criminal records should be more deeply looked into before transaction—and finally, equipping teachers at highs schools with the right kind of weaponry to prevent mass shootings.

Every year, thousands of people, innocent or guilty die from gun violence in the United States. Gun violence is despicable while guns are still lawful with a permit. The Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution states "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (Cornell). This statement means that the government were to ever become corrupt the people have the rights to guns in order to protect themselves. This amendment was written because of the Revolutionary War. The founding fathers didn 't want the people to be defenseless like they were against the British so they guaranteed that right. However, our founding fathers failed to think about the disadvantages of giving access to guns in our country so easily. Many people debate that there should be more limits on gun control considering the many deaths and mass shootings that have occurred in the United States. Our country leads all nations in gun violence yet some still debate that it 's in the constitution for a reason, for the protection of the people.

Recently, the SAFE Act, or Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act, has sparked a large debate amongst New York residents. The law, passed January 15th, 2013, created many new restrictions for gun owners and those looking to purchase guns. Perhaps the most controversial part of the ordeal was the hasty enactment of the law. Many dispute that it is an infringement on their constitutional rights. In addition, the State doesn 't have the means to enact many parts of the law. The law assumes that restricting the physical guns will solve the issue of gun violence; however, the real issue is mental health, or rather the lack of sufficient mental health care in New York State. The SAFE Act will do little to prevent further gun violence, instead it will restrict law abiding citizens from obtaining firearms for hunting or sport, and it continues to enrage many who feel it 's a violation of their rights.

In light of the mass shooting in Umpqua, Oregon earlier this month, President Obama 's sobering remarks made a crucial point about the nature of Gun Violence in the United States. He remarked, "Somehow this has become routine. The reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine, the conversation in the aftermath of it ... We have become numb to this." As of this day, the United States has a little over one mass shooting every day. It occurs so frequently that people go back to their regular lives after the heavy media coverage is over, only to be outraged once it happens again a week or a month later. Gun control; two words that have many people on the edge of their seats. One of the most controversial issues in America currently, and it comes up time and time again when another person is killed from gunfire. Some people believe the issue is a personal one. “Let me have my guns,” they say. The realistic questions to ask them in response are; where will you get “your guns?” How responsible are you? What is your intention with these guns? Have you ever committed a felony? These are not unreasonable questions. In most background checks these questions are asked. However, there are too many loopholes in the system for these checks to matter. The majority of people who have guns aren’t getting them from the black market; most are buying them legally. A lot of people often buy them at gun shows as well, where, “Gun-show organizers say private sellers typically disregard the laws.” (Tampa Bay Times) The ethical question here is this; Is it right to allow gun violence to continue when there are proactive laws that could be enacted to prevent it?

Gun violence in America is the one of the worst epidemics in the world right now and needs to be solved. Over four hundred students have been killed while in school during school shootings ever since the Sandy Hook tragedy in 2012. That is nearly one entire elementary school. This statistic alone should have prompted for major changes, however, nothing has been done. After the Parkland school shooting, millions of children around the U.S. have now created movements by themselves such as walkouts and marches to help bring awareness to the rest of the country.
