Pro Gay Marriage

Gay marriage should be legal because as woman and man, all individuals have the same right in society; because same-sex couples can constitute a good based family; because it is just a way to make official a common union nowadays, even with the religious issue; because it is not related to polygamy; and because love matters and it does not differ in nature according to the sex of its object or the person who experiences it.

Imagine falling deeply in love with someone; having a happy long-term relationship with them. This person is the entire world to you, but although it is wanted by both partners, there can be no legal marriage. Because it is illegal to marry someone of the same gender. The United States of America were founded on the belief that everyone is equal and should be free to pursue happiness, yet there is oppression of a sexual minority that needs to end. Although there are many different people with many different reasons opposing same-sex marriage, such as religious or personal beliefs, it should not be illegal to marry someone of the same gender because not all people support it.

It is true that marriage in this nation traditionally has been regarded as a relationship exclusively between a man and a woman, and many of our nation’s multiple religions define marriage in precisely those terms. But with the Supreme Court has always previously considered marriage in that context, the underlying rights and liberties that marriage embodies are not in any way confined to heterosexuals. One’s sexuality is not a preference, it is immutable, unchangeable, and the Constitution protects us all against prejudices and discrimination based on immutable differences. Not only is not allowing same-sex couples to marry discriminatory, it also makes gays second class citizens. When we as a nation refuse to accord the same marital status to gays and lesbians, we discourage same-sex couples from forming the same relationships we encourage for others, and we are essentially telling gays, those of who love them, and society as a whole that their relationships are less worthy, less legitimate, less permanent and less valued. By not legalizing same-sex marriages the US demeans their relationships and demeans gays as individuals. Same-sex marriages must be legalized.

According to ProCon.org (n.d) the world's first gay marriage was held on April 1, 2001. Why would anybody not want someone to be happy. Gays should not care what anyone has to think because it is not their body or their choice. It's the person that's gays choice. According to Pewforum.org (n.d)in 2001 americans opposed same sex marriage 57% to 35%, but by 2016 55% of americans supported same sex marriage comared to the 37% that opposed it. Gay people need more rights because gays should have access to the same rights as straights do, legalizing gay marriage will not harm the institution of marriage, and same sex marriage is a right preserved by the constitution.

Today’s society has many strong opinions on who people should marry, especially when the couple is same sex. Marriage is a commitment between two people, and overtime homosexuals have been denied their necessary rights as a human. Luckily, Americans live in a land where they can marry whomever they choose, but in many states homosexuals are left out of the deal because they choose to marry the same sex. Gay and lesbian couples a bid by laws and should be treated with the same fairness and equality as any other human being.

In the present time, marriage between two people of the same sex is legal in 37 states and the District of Columbia. During the course of the United States’ history, people have fought discrimination. People has battled to recognize equality for racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, and immigrants. As a result, denying some people, the option to marry due to their sexual orientation is discriminatory and creates the idea of a second of class citizens. I am pro-gay marriage not only for what I have stated before but also for the following disclosure.

Most people believe that they deserve the rights they are granted by the government. An upstanding citizen who pays their taxes, serves their community and abides by the law should be afforded the rights of an American. However, not all citizens are afforded equal rights. Gay and lesbians are consistently denied rights that are typically taken for granted by the average American. Specifically, gay and lesbians couples are denied the right to marry even if they are upstanding citizens. They are held at an unfair disadvantage solely because of their sexual orientation. This discrimination must stop because gay and lesbian couples are law-abiding citizens too, who should be afforded the same rights as heterosexual couples.

Peaceful protests were popular during 2015 to allow equality for homosexuals. However homosexuals still face opposition in America as these groups are becoming unemployed due to sexual discrimination; as well as denied basic accommodations and inadequate health care. Yet other American’s feel that oppression is necessary because people feel uncomfortable and believe homosexuality is unnatural. However, we as Americans should move on from this form of thinking because it makes us think backwards instead of forwards. While homosexuals endorse the fight for equality as it should be considered as a natural basic human right,

Gay marriage is a right that should be open to anyone in any state. The constitution does not state that same-sex marriage is unethical. Many people see gay marriage as something that is unlawful when in reality gay marriage just the same as opposite-sex marriage. Same-sex couples should be able to be married because they deserve equal rights, and they are also great parents and legalizing gay marriage would help reduce gay teen suicide.

In the Boston Globe newspaper editorial “For Gay Marriage” the editors argue that gay marriage should be legalized. Throughout the article the Globe Editors mention the expanding circle of rights, the circle includes the civil-rights movement, gender equality, rights for the disabled, 18 year olds to vote, single mothers and adoptive parents. It is apparent that the right for gay marriage should occur (“Globe” A18).These advances have occurred with the help of court cases. The 1967 supreme court case and Loving V. Virginia Court rulings ruled that the ban on interracial marriage was unconstitutional (“Globe” A18). Along with the court precedents The Globe uses Hillary Goodridge as an example when she was unable to see her newly born daughter in the hospital because she was not married to her partner of 15 years. (A18). The Editors discuss opposing reasons why gay marriage should not be legalized by the Massachusetts Attorney General. One argument the attorney general makes is that marriage is, “…A social institution designed to promote child bearing and rearing” (A18). The Globe the refutes this statement because same sex couples are not denied the right to adopt as well as they do the everyday things an opposite sex couple would do (A18).
