Hello I’m your host Ben Bush and today we will be discussing the pro/ con issues of the self driving car. First off this is a new concept and just think, would you trust a car that drives without human control? It's a strange question but with companies like Uber using these self driving cars for their business the concept of self driving cars is no longer just an idea for the future, it's quite apparent that it's a current event. Cons, most likely the more important part of this issue is the safety of the passengers and other drivers. These cars have been known to cut off busses and make incomplete stops at stop signs. The safety of these cars is often criticized but even if they do make a few mistakes is it better than the average human driving?
We should not have self-driven cars. They are to dangerous to people on the road and to pedestrians. When there is a pedestrian in the way of the vehicle the car decides who lives and who dies. Meaning the car will decide by itself if it will hit the pedestrian or if it will hit another car.
Driver’s Education courses are important for a new driver. Drivers Education is proven to help young driver’s become familiar with driving and to learn important defensive driving techniques. Our mission at Greenbrier High School should be to incorporate a Driver’s Education course into the curriculum for their students. Teens from the ages 16-19 have the highest accident rate in the nation. It is important for teens to complete a Driver’s Ed course so they can learn road safety rules, traffic rules and regulations, and defensive driving strategies.
Do you know how long it takes into you get your license ? At the age of sixty without driver education you have to wait 270 days to take the test and you have to have so many hours driving with a parent. It takes six months before you can take your driver license test . But ,if you have successfully completed an approved driver education program you can get it sooner . I don’t think that’s fair . Anderson needs to change the policy to make it easier to get a driver license .
Autonomous cars have been debated at the state level for years, always being voted against, however the federal government has finally decided to speak up and provide guidelines for these self-driving cars. These new guidelines are designed to govern everything there is about self-driving cars from cars without steering wheels to Tesla’s new car that is only autonomous on the highway.
Self driving cars have the potential to completely revolutionize the way public transportation continues in our society; many are for it and even more are against it. It is fair to say that this is a great invention and that in some cases it can serve as a safer way of transportation (only in certain situations) as well as make for a more dangerous one. Tesla is a worldwide known company and although the company did not invent driverless cars, they did most definitely perfect it. Having the most technologically advanced vehicle in the world that can predict accidents before they even happen, it is a safe bet to trust the Tesla autopilot feature. The majority of the population believe that it will be nothing but beneficial to our society and provide us with safer streets and highways. But there is much more than meets the eye when it comes to this new technology.
Although car accidents have decreased in the past few decades due to measures such as antilock brakes and airbags being put into place, road accidents have always pushed for a safer and a more effective plan to decrease congestion through infrastructure and transportation. With the increasing numbers of vehicles on the road today, it is not surprising to encounter a heavy traffic or an accident on the road caused by congestion. Therefore, in the past few years, self-driving cars have emerged as a solution to these road issues. In the article “Self-driving cars are coming, and the technology promises to save lives” by Ucilia Wang makes clear the prospect that advocators of driverless automobiles holds. In the article, the central premise is
Can you imagine living in a world where humans have become mindless lethargic? The simplest things we are use doing become difficult to do, requiring the help of robotic intelligence. Well you might not have to think about it much longer, for many car companies have manufacturer self-driving cars also known as “autonomous vehicles.” Why bother drive yourself or pay attention to the road that is in first of you? When there's a car that does all on road activities. There are many benefits that these self-driving cars have to offer; but however, there are a lot of unanswered questions on how safe or increase of unemployment in our economy. Our technology have shown improvement over the years, but I don't think it is advanced enough to safely be fully self driven without the driver's unwanted attention.
Technology has developed new additions to automobiles and has now developed driverless cars to ride on our roads. These automobiles make driving less hard on our humans and more difficult on the car itself. Technology made new advancements for cars to help people make their lives easier. I think we should have these cars on our roads for several reasons.
Over 37,000 people die in road crashes each year, an additional 23.5 million are injured or disabled, nearly 8,000 people are killed in crashes involving drivers ages 16-20 (“Road Crash Statistics”). According to the Association for Safe International Road Travel, “crashes cost the U.S. $230.6 billion per year, or an average of $820 per person” (“Road Crash Statistics”). So, now imagine a world in where you feel safe to drive any time of the day. Imagine getting into a car and not worrying about driving alongside drunk drivers, drivers who are exhausted, or distracted drivers who are on their phones. Our technology has advanced significantly and it only continues advancing. Waymo, a small project that was launched by Google started exploring the idea of a self-driven car. Self-driven cars can be beneficial to our society because they will lower traffic while improving safety, lower the death toll in car accidents, and will be environmental friendly. If we start using self-driving cars our society will become less worried about risking their lives and people would not be so afraid to get to their destination.
Do we really need self-driving cars? Are they beneficial or detrimental? That's what we are here to discuss today, and we thank you for taking the time to allow us to come out and speak to you about the subject at hand. The cars would react to certain situations that humans are too slow to react to. However, the technology would be of very high interest to hackers. We believe self-driving cars are very detrimental to society and are not worth investing our money or time. As we go through the pros and cons we will deliver the reasoning for our decision.
According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, driverless vehicles are not ready to be driven on public roads for purposes other than testing. But why is this? Self-driving cars operate through similar navigational software as a smartphone and traffic obstacles. However, they don’t yet respond to the actions of other drivers and pedestrians. This is evidenced by the Google driverless car that crashed into a bus to avoid sandbags that is making headlines all over the news this week.
According to recent statistics in the last five years, there are around 32,166 fatal motor vehicle crashes in the United States every year in which 35,092 deaths occur (“Highway Safety” 2). This fact unfortunately, is the result of the actions that irresponsible drivers make unfollowing and misusing the roadway rules in dangerous ways. Moreover, accidents are only one example among the rest of situations in which authorities and medical institutions are involve trying regulate to its maximum limit. But, what if there was another element that could provide extra support to handle traffic congestions, crashes, and other public safety concerns on the streets? Well, a couple years ago if someone had thought of self-driving cars as answer to this question, most likely they would chuckle and assume that this could only happen in the movies. However, this fictional idea has come to a reality and this type of cars will change the way we live on a very close future. Self-driving cars are intended not only benefit the people with its revolutionary technology but will solve most of the problems experienced by people on the roads and will decrease the amount of accidents caused by human actions. Nevertheless, there are some skeptical perspectives related to ethical concerns and liabilities that
Self-driving cars sounds kind of Buck Rogers, Doesn’t it? But it may be closer than you think. Apple received a permit to test a self-driving car in California this year. If you are floored by this statement you are not alone but the idea of a driverless vehicle has been around since the 1920s back when everyone was looking for the next grandiose thing in all honesty aren’t we still looking for the next grandiose thing? Even our own public bus will get a facelift. With the obvious upgrades like comfortable seating and design but also facial recognition technology which will aid in recovering lost children and the apprehending of criminals and wanted people. Lastly two words robot taxi sounds amazing right and it’s not that far off from happening
Dear Elsie, to be honest, I cannot imagine myself where I do not have to drive because it is impossible and would take away the fun and exciting things about driving and owing a car. Technology is improving and at the same time it is destroying our generations. I believed if this self-diving thing come to past it would be very expensive and would not decrease the amount of accident happening on the highway because it is going to be on auto drive, which mean that you still have to drive the car at some point. I do not see this happening in the next five to twenty years.
One of the greatest things that teenagers look forward to is getting their driver¡¦s licence and getting the freedom to do whatever they want. Ever since graduated licensing began five years ago, on April 1,1994, many people have made good and bad comments about it.
