A career in policing is an extraordinary experience. It offers amazing training and many opportunities to rise through the ranks. As a paramilitary force, a police officer's duty is the serve and protect the public from any and all immediate threat. They are responsible for threats partaking within a certain jurisdiction, although their police authority may extend their jurisdiction if necessary. A few main duties a police officer has as well as protecting the general public is: Patrolling the streets, arresting criminals, and appearing in court. These are some main duties an officer must do, as per their job description.

Many times an officer is will attend the court appearance to defend their judgement, or in larger cases, to testify against someone. An officer is heavily trained to gather substantial evidence that allows for his or her department to have a strong case against a person suspected of a crime. Most often an officer will be taking notes when attending a call. These personal notes are available to the department and the officer to look back and recollect on the event in question. They are also used to protect the officer, as officers write the date and time of call down before starting to take notes. Police Officers have always relied heavily on their notepad as it is a tool that helps them every day in the field. In recent years, technology has proved that the notepad may not be needed as much as it used too. Police Officers in the United States and Canada have started wearing a device called a “body cam” or “PDRD’s” (portable digital recording device). These devices are small cameras with built in microphones that can be manually turned on by an officer to record them interacting with the public on calls. The goal is to eliminate the “their word against yours” problem in court. This camera eliminates it by recording everything the officers sees and records the footage so that it may be used if needed.
