The diagnostic tools that I have seen used at the clinic where I do my practicum includes incision and drainage (I & D) of the abscesses, rapid strep throat testing, influenza swab, urine dip-stick testing, and slit lamp examination. These diagnostic testing provide quick result that aids with the diagnosis of the patients. The advantages of the I & D include pain and discomfort relief and faster healing time and its disadvantages an increased risk for cellulitis and the reappearance of the pus in incision site when the incision site is not large enough (Domino, Baldor, Golding, & Stephens, 2017). In terms of rapid strep throat testing, the pros include the ability to know the next course of action in a matter of five (5) minutes and ensure that the patient receive appropriate treatment. The cons include the chances of having a false positive or false negative result if not properly collected and if correctly swabbed, the discomfort that the patient feels. In addition, if the result is negative and the constitutional symptoms show otherwise, sending the culture to the main hospital to determine the other strains of the Streptococcus would take approximately 3 days and may cause …show more content…
Since the stick that is used to swab needs to go all the way to the nasopharynx, some patients do not tolerate it very well. There is an increased risk of spreading the virus due to the uncontrollable sneezing that results from the swab. On a positive note, unnecessary testing is avoided if the patients are low risk and shows obvious signs and symptoms of the flu and the duration of their illness. As Lab Tests Online Australasia (2018) stated, the test should be done as soon as possible so that the virus strain that shed during the first few days is determined. An anti-viral medication (Tamiflu) for influenza A & B is given during the first 48 hours of symptom onset if that is the case, otherwise it would not be
In this case study, the history of present illness and associated signs and symptoms as well as confirmation of positive exposure to influenza warrants considering antiviral therapy. Antiviral medications are clinically most beneficial when started as close to illness onset as possible. According to current guidelines published by the AAP (2016) for the current influenza season oral oseltamivir remains the antiviral drug of choice for the management of influenza infections. Benefits with the greatest effect on outcome should occur with treatment initiated within 48 hours of illness onset but is not contraindicated if initiated later in the illness. Review of the case study provides no rationale not to consider prescribing antiviral therapy. Certainly, it is well known that immunization is the most important public health measure for the prevention of influenza infection, however, antiviral drugs also may be used for prevention in high-risk patients in certain
potential pathogens and their particular tissue location. Rapid influenza antigen testing is completed by swabbing the nose, mouth or throat obtaining secretions for staining with fluorescent antibodies to identify the virus. This usually takes 1 to 3 hours for the determination of results whether a bacteria is positive or negative, so that the correct antibiotics can be prescribed. First a thin smear of bacteria on a clean slide that is covered with crystal violet stain for 1 minute. A wash is completed and iodine solution is added to the smear to enhance staining for 1 minute. Being rinsed again in water and then 95% ethanol for one minute. Washing the violet stain off will differentiate between the two types of bacteria. If the bacteria

He is a six-year-old, first grader who is small for his age, but is in constant motion. Though he is very curious, asking a multitude of questions, when unhappy he tends to scowl while emitting a high-pitched, long-lasting shriek.

Diagnostic procedures are performed to help analyze a patient’s complaint and determine the cause of signs and symptoms. Diagnostic techniques classified in the Medicine section include an assessment or evaluation, an examination, or the use of equipment or tools to make a recording or measurement or conduct a function study.
For instance, with early assessment, a patient with cellulitis may get oral anti-infection agents that could dodge hospitalization for intravenous anti-microbials. Additionally, a patient with ceaseless heart

The incubation period of Influenza virus is reported to be average 2 days (range 1–4 days). The shedding of the influenza virus is detectable 24 to 48 hours before the clinical onset. The shedding reaches peak during the first 24 hours of illness due to virus. The virus shedding generally declines over next 5 days which may be longer in children (Carrat et
This will show an infection in the lungs and sets it aside from the flu which will not show up on an x-ray. Oxfordjournal.org also suggests blood cultures may be done. To treat pneumonia, the AAFP recommends 600 mg of Linezolid to be taken orally every twelve hours as long as your physician prescribes. Oxfordjournal.org suggests 1 or 2 grams of Aztreonam every eight hours may also be given in combination with Linezolid. The CDC says the best way to prevent S. aureus pneumonia infections is to follow basic infection control procedures, especially in hospitals. This includes hand washing frequently and wearing a mask if you feel ill or have a cough. Workers and visitors should also wear person protection equipment for airborne precautions. Doctors should prescribe the least amount of antibiotic drugs for the patient so they do not contribute to the quickly increasing resistance of S. aureus, and patients should finish their entire round of medication even if they’re feeling
Many times a sore throat is not streptococcal pharyngitis and does not need medications and will resolve by itself. The way that a test is performed in order to confirm if someone is positive for strep is by performing a rapid strep test and culture. A rapid strep test is a swab from the back of the patient’s throat. The rapid test takes about five to seven minutes to determine if the patient is positive or negative. If the rapid strep test returns negative a culture is then taken to the lab for confirmation and that typically takes from 24-48 hours for results, (UpToDate,
Future studies should concentrate on introducing intravenous antibiotics to pre-hospital setting, which would dramatically decrease the time interval to administration of antibiotics. However, safety, efficacy and cost-effectiveness would need to be taken into account through conducting randomized controlled trials to find out the effect on reducing delay, infection and occurrence of adverse effects

The biggest fish in the sea is a shark. It is called the whale shark and it is longer than two classrooms. A whale shark has many rows of small teeth. It eats only small fish. As a whale shark swims, it opens its mouth and swallows fish. It swallows enough water to fill a swimming pool when it eats. A whale shark lays big eggs. Whale shark eggs are as big as soccer balls. Whale shark eggs do not look like regular eggs. They are shaped like a rectangle.
Diagnostic Criteria (from the DSM-5): Excessive anxiety and worry, occurring more days than not for at least 6 months, about a number of events or activities. The individual finds it difficult to control the worry. For children only one of the following are required:
When researching about mathematics in a medical environment, I found that one can use probability to calculate how accurate a medical test is exactly. There are many factors that play into the reason for level of accuracy of the test. Despite the fact that results will vary from laboratory to laboratory, one of the highest accuracy rates is 97%, for which was well-known and thought of as prestigious and high quality. However, this raises the point of that is essential in the understanding of the accuracy of any given diagnostic test. The accuracy of the diagnostic tests are derived from statistical distribution. However, this brings in the question according to diagnostic tests of how much error is acceptable and does the % error
