Should people be punished for doing disrespectful things to the flag? The American flag is an emblem for the country that represents freedom; however, for some it represents something more negative and offensive; therefore, they pursue to do negative, damaging acts towards the flag. As little kids, many remember their parents telling them not to put the flag on the ground, when it was not up on the flag pole it was rolled nicely and put securely away. The flag was treated with the respect in the memory of the ones who gave their freedom to give us ours; although, that does not seem to stop people from showing extreme hostility towards the flag as a statement of their beliefs on how our nation is run, but there are better ways for people to be heard and voice their political opinions rather than burning the symbol of our nation. …show more content…

The flag should not necessarily be used to get a point across and it just shows disrespect to the country, and absolutely no sense of community.People who burn the flag speak of freedom of speech; however, then go and burn and destroy the very thing that represents freedom and freedom of speech is almost a conundrum. Congress has presented a bill that would accommodate forbidding flag desecration. Each time, in any case, the Supreme Court decided that this demonstration was ensured by the First Amendment the right to speak freely.
