For generations, the saying has always been “winning is not everything.” For most cases, yes, winning is not what it is all about. There are, however, occasions when winning is a necessity. The American Civil War was a “brother against brother” fight over the issue of slavery in the South. Although allowed in the country farther back than the establishment of the nation, slavery was a part of the citizens of the United States’ lifestyle. Many Northerners felt that slavery was an abomination. The country had to come to an agreement on this issue. The only agreement they felt would resolve everything was going to war with one another. One might feel that the real winner was the Northern part of the country, the Union, and the real losers were …show more content…
The south had an agricultural advantage. They could never go hungry with all the farms that were around. The South had territorial advantage. They knew the land like the back of their hand. This home court advantage was used against the north considering that the north had no idea of what kind of terrain they were fighting on. The North still had more significant advantages that enabled them to win. One might feel that the South was the major loser of the war because their land was destroyed, their property was seized, and they would potentially go into debt because they had lost almost everything. Keep another thing in mind, the Blacks in the south could also be considered a loser of the American Civil War. “If conditions were bad for Southern whites, they were far worse for Southern blacks- the three and a half million men and women now emerging from bondage” (Text 344). To some, this sounds like a good thing. Others see this as a terrible situation. Slaves had no place to go; they had nothing except the clothes on their backs. Slaves lived in poverty. Although Emancipation was a good thing for the right reasons, it did cause terrible
The American Civil War started in 1861 and ended in 1865. The two sides of the war are the Union (North) and Confederacy (South). The South wanted to keep slavery to maintain their economy and they worried that the North would end slavery. The South then seceded, starting the conflict. Around 620,000 people died in the war. Both sides of the war had advantages and disadvantages in the Civil War. Population in the South was small because it was based around farming communities, putting them at a disadvantage because they had fewer people to make up their army. On the other hand, they had great generals and a lot of morale. Meanwhile, the North’s large
Economically, the war was a benefit for the North and a disaster for the South. The North began the war with several advantages. The North held a distinct lead in nearly every
Railroads are not nearly as popular in the United States as they are in European countries. Prior to the American Civil War, railroads were a fairly new, and untried, invention. Compared to carriages and the other modes of transportation at the time, the railroad was far superior. Due to this superiority, they were used to transport soldiers, food, and supplies. A systemic railroad began to spread all across the nation, and both sides of the war used them to their advantage.
Freedmen’s Bureau that helped distribute food, supplies, and land to the freed slaves, this remained a positive throughout the reconstruction. Furthermore positives added to the redevelopment of the south including Lincoln’s Ten-Percent Plan and the 13th and 15th amendment, which remained perserved. Lincoln’s plan agreed to allow each secessionist state to rejoin only after a new constitution was reestablished on their behalf. The majority of the Civil War reconstruction was a failure but there were few positives that kept hope alive for former slaves.
There has been much debate as to whether the Civil War could have been avoided or not. The Evansville Daily Journal argues that the Civil War was inevitable, but Alexander Stephens disagrees and proposes that the war could have been avoided. Stephen’s argument is superior to the Evansville Daily Journal one because it objectively talks about the recent changes in the United States, explains the different views between the North and South, and tries to convince people that a war is not necessary.
The Civil War marked a monumental period in United States History. President Lincoln found himself attempting to preserve the union, while the Confederates from the south were fighting to create their own separate country. This war was primarily caused by one issue: slavery. The northerners did not expect the power of the South; it was not the quick war that they had expected. Both sides had their fair share of victories and losses. From the beginning of the war the Confederacy had a strong advantage of military leadership. After turning points in the war such as the battles of Gettysburg and Antietam the power shifted to the Union, eventually leading to the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House. During the war, Lincoln was able to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the slaves. The freeing of the slaves resulted in a tremendous change in the lifestyle of southerners, both black and white. White southerners no longer had free labor, and black southerners were free to start their own lives. However, many of these free blacks did not know what to do with themselves after they were freed (McPherson 105). They did not have any land or money, and the majority were not educated. They were promised land from the union, but they never received this land (PBS 1). Without land it was nearly impossible to gain money in the southern economy at this time. These blacks were technically free citizens, but they were nowhere
Civil War is defined as a war between citizens of the same country. When the two parties are from the same country there are bound to be major advantages and disadvantages to both sides. The South had a very recognizable advantage fighting on the defensive territory and being familiar with the land while the North was essentially coming in blind. While this would have been an advantage for the South, the North had an advantage themselves, they outnumbered the South. With both sides having huge advantages and disadvantages, it makes one think of the ‘what if’s”. Both the good and bad of each side played a crucial role of the outcome. The side that won would have an impact on the entire country.
From the time war was declared all odds were against the South. The North would have inevitably won. Due to the fact that the confederacy lacked in population and a drafting system, had a poor resource industry, and faced the struggle of internal conflict they lost the Civil war. This war that ripped our country apart lasted over four long years in constant battle.
In 1861 the “United States” was in fact not united; they were divided. At the time the United states of America was going through a hard time. The south believed slavery was necessary and wanted to move westward to expand their land and plantations. When the North banned slavery in the West, the south was extremely upset and don't enjoy being told what to do. They began to secede from the union which began the civil war. I believe the north won the civil war because of their population, their advantage in supplies, exports/imports, and transportation, and because they had better finances.
“A house divided against itself cannot stand.”1 These words, spoken by Abraham Lincoln, foreshadowed the war that became the bloodiest in all of the United State's history. The Civil War was a brutal conflict between the North and South; brother against brother. With slavery as the root cause, Southern states had seceded from the Union and were fighting for their independence. They became the Confederate States of America (CSA) and were a force to be reckoned with. The Union, however, put up a fierce struggle to preserve the country. If the Civil War was to be a war of attrition, the North had the upper hand because of its large population, industrialization, raw materials, railroad mileage, and navy. But if the war was short lived, the
The Southerners still had to feed the slaves, but the slaves were not able to help the war effort. There was a ton of skirmishes and battles, but literally a third of their people were just farming cotton! The Union took advantage of this by blockading all ports around the South. The Confederacy could not ship out cotton, or bring in supplies. Due to this fact, the South’s entire economy was crumbling down! They needed to sell the cotton to bring back weapons and tools, but they did not have access to the ocean. The North had three times the factories, and made their own weapons, whereas the South had to have them brought in from Britain and other european
The civil war, fought from 1861-1865, was started after seven southern slave states declared their secession and formed the Confederate states. The Union had many advantages that, ultimately, led them to victory. The had many political, economic, and military benefits that aided them in their victory.
1865 was a year filled with hardships for the United States. Changes to the constitution were made, businesses formed, and leadership changed. This was also a year of controversy, dealing with racism. The United States’ strength was tested and proved to be strong with the end of the Civil War on April ninth. 1865 was an important year because of the Civil War, economic changes, and politics.
The Roman Republic was a system of procedures formed by tradition; there was no written constitution or legally binding legislation. Precedent and consensus set procedure creating the parameters for acceptable behaviour. However, it was near the end of the 2nd century BC, where the system began to deteriorate and fall, ultimately causing the civil war in 49 BC. The boundaries of acceptable behaviour were stretched by politicians such as Caesar and Pompey and as a result new perilous precedents were set. Violence along with the use of an army became a political tool in the domestic, political sphere. The civil war laid on the foundations that constitutional methods proved ineffective in the face of an inadequate aristocratic government and therefore Caesar and the senate lead by Pompey used violence and rebellion against each other in an attempt to stabilise the administrative system of government and essentially control Rome. Caesar himself ignited the civil war as a result of the unstable Roman Republic, major events such as rebellion and revolts, senate and the political sphere and the breakdown of the triumvirate, which fuelled the motive for civil war. The corrupted Roman system alongside with personal issues and disagreements became the catalyst for the civil war of 49 BC and consequently set the parameters for the new dictatorial Roman world.
The Civil War was a very critical event in American History. It started by many disagreements between the North and the South. For blacks as for other Americans, the Civil War was a strong voice preaching the needs for devotion and allegiance to form a justified nation. After the war ended there were many results that would forever linger throughout America and the world.
