Pros And Cons Of The Education System

There are 99,000 schools in the U.S., and they are all different in their own way (nsta.org). This can lead to some students getting a better education than others, because of a number of different reasons, like lack of teachers, funding, or the size of the classes. In order to improve as a country there needs to be a more uniform system that challenges students. It will take time to develop the system and implement it in schools, but I feel it will be very helpful in fixing the national education and in improving test

Many high schools are spent huge amount of time and resources to prepare high school students to test or even being responsible citizen. Diane Ravitch in her essay “The essentials of a good education” tells about it, “More time was allotted to take practice tests in mathematics and reading. Because there are only so many hours in a day, there was less time for subject that were not tested” (page 106). She believes that if student spent whole day to prepare to test and get “A”, such school is a not really good school, even if gets high scores and the state awards it an “A”. Also many educated parent are would not tolerate a school that cut back or eliminate the arts to spent more time preparing for state test. If student will study well on each subject, for example good enough on math, writing and reading so he/she will not need extra class to prepare for test and spent his/he time and money. So Diane Ravitch believes that, our education system is in wrong way because they spent much time to preparing test. On the other hand, John Taylor Gatto in his essay “Against school” represent that, the problem of US education is not to give a knowledge, but conversely to make good citizens or workforce. He tells in his essay that US education system become like Prussian system, “Our educational system really is Prussian in origin, and that really is cause for concern. One of the very worst aspects of Prussian culture: an educational system deliberately designed to produce mediocre intellects, to hamstring the inner life, to deny students appreciable leadership skills, and to ensure docile and incomplete citizens - all in order to render the populace "manageable."(117). In his opinion the education system problem was that they make people become predictable, and this is of great use to those who wish to harness and manipulate a large labor

There should be a better educational system in United States. The first reason is that students of United states educational system are not learning what they need to learn. For example, there are students who come out of these schools and still do not know how to read. Also these schools are not protecting the student from drugs or premarital sex, which is only harming the kids. Kids are dying from drug over doses, and girls are dropping out of schools from teen pregnancy. These teen pregnancies also hurt the future kids, because they are more than likely not going to know their dad.

His beliefs behind creating a system through standardized testing was to create a purposeful lasting common-school movement for professional teachers to educate the youth in creating social efficacy, civic virtue, and character. Today, students repress the idea of tests and idolize these exams as simple memory tests instead of knowledge/skill based tests. The blame and pent up anger students rile with teachers about exams breaks the whole purpose of learning. Today, students look at tests and exams as a point-based competition. Before one can examine the school system and its flaws, they must look at how it originated and why it is the way it is. For one, it was set up in the late 1800s and early 1900s in order to meet the rampant needs of America's newly industrialized economy. Public schools supplied factories with a skilled labor force, and provided basic literacy to the masses. This was the education that the vast majority of the population received. The overall implementation of our current school system is credited to an educational reformer by the name of Horace Mann, who is known by many to be the father of the American public school system. He studied a wide variety of different educational models before eventually putting into effect the Prussian model.

Standardized testing should not be implemented in the education system because it limits the students learning capabilities, scores are not accurate, and it causes stress for both the student and teacher.

The education system has been a controversial issue among educators. Requirements of school do not let student choose what they want to study for their future. It’s a big issue to force student study specific curriculums, which don’t help them improve, and what they like to create something. Educators choose a general system for education to all students which based on general knowledge. Intelligent or genius students have to be in that system of education, which doesn’t let them improve their creativity. Educators attempt to change that system to make it better, but their changing was not that great to be an example for the world. Also, did that change qualify education system to compete other systems or not? In some examples and
