This song starts off very much like the Jimi Hendrix guitar solo in Purple Haze. The difference in this piece is that it tones down a bit so you are able to hear the lyrics of the song although it still feels that the guitar is the “star” or solo of the song. I believe Janis Joplin is also the lead singer in this song and she has an amazing voice. It is a rough, blues feel and she could hit some high notes. Her style of singing is amazing.
Rage Against the Machine’s single "Testify", the first song from their 1999 album 'The Battle of Los Angeles", is a commentary on the American public’s blindness or numbness to global issues such as war, politics, capitalism, wealth, and power through the filtering of information by the mass news media. As it relates to Sociology, “Testify” deals mainly with Marxist Conflict Theory, and also incorporates many of the topics we have learned about in class throughout the semester.
There are numerous works of literature that recount a story- a story from which inspiration flourishes, providing a source of liberating motivation to its audience, or a story that simply aspires to touch the hearts and souls of all of those who read it. One of the most prevalent themes in historical types of these kinds of literature is racism. In America specifically, African Americans endured racism heavily, especially in the South, and did not gain equal rights until the 1960s. In her renowned book The Color Purple, Alice Walker narrates the journey of an African American woman, Celie Johnson (Harris), who experiences racism, sexism, and enduring hardships throughout the course of her life; nonetheless, through the help of friends and
Consider the title of your song. What does it signify? How can you relate it to the essence of your song? Is there double meaning?
Ludacris does a remarkable job of portraying his message about the struggles that some adolescents are faced with. “Runaway Love”, by Ludacris, featuring Mary J. Blige (2007), represents the theme of struggle through hip-hop and rap music. It is about little girls who are “stuck up in the world on their own.” They have to take care of themselves because the people they are around do not care about them. They range from nine to eleven years in age, and their goal in life, at such a young age, is to run away from home. Ludacris is trying to get the listener to realize the struggles that even children have to face because adults are not the only ones who have problems, like most people believe. He is very successful in
As this was a cover version, King probably intended for there to be a specific focus on guitar improvisation, as there are 3 different solo sections in the song.
In times of war it is quite common for people to start questioning their values and their actions and be unsure of the path they are taking. This is common because to protect our values we often are told that we have to take actions that conflict with those values. One example would be how to protect our liberties we must sometimes restrain those liberties during treacherous times. However, the ultimate question is whether or not going against the very values we stand for is a hypocritical and wrongful action plan. Bruce Springsteen approaches this very issue in his song “Devils & Dust”, from the CD with the same title, and he subtly criticizes how the United States is betraying
Mary Anne is a girl who came into the story of the Song Tra Bong, when the men were talking about getting some women in the base. How “It was nothing serious. Just passing the time, playing with possibilities, and for a while they tossed the idea around…” (89). Mark Frossie took this idea and made it a reality by inviting his girlfriend over to Vietnam and getting her in the base. She is a young girl just out of high school and is a very charismatic person. “Mary Anne Bell was an attractive girl. Too wide in the shoulders, maybe but she had terrific legs, a bubbly personality, a happy smile” (90). “ The men genuinely like her” and that “… she was good for morale” (91). A girl like that you wouldn’t think of her as someone who wanted to go out and kill people. That’s why it surprises the men and possibly the reader when they find out how she is affected by the war. The reader would probably think that she would be scared after learning about the war and wanting to stay in the base. Or that she would always be that bubbly person for the soldiers in the base. You would normally think that violent actions
Dream on” by Aerosmith connects to Santiago and his recurring dream in the beginning of the story starting on Page 6. Santiago deals with a recurring dream and he does not understand why he is having it. This dream occurs every time Santiago sleeps under a sycamore tree that grows out of the ruins of a church. In this dream a child tells Santiago to go after a treasure located by the Egyptian pyramids. Santiago is confused by the message of the dream and goes to a gypsy woman to try and understand the dream. She says that he should go to Egypt in pursuit of the treasure. This leads to Santiago meeting a magical man who turns out to be the King of Salem. He says that going to Egypt is Santiago’s personal legend and he should set off for his journey tomorrow. This journey leads to Santiago arriving in Tangier and a robber taking all of the money Santiago brought in his journey towards the Egyptian pyramids. This leaves Santiago by himself as he now has to find a way to push through adversity and get to his destination. Dream on is about following your dreams and aspirations in life by following your journey. “Dream until your dreams come true” is a line highlighted in the song that captures the purpose of following your dreams. It is about your want to be someone and to accomplish what you are supposed to in life. Santiago’s purpose is to follow his personal legend by following the good omens throughout the story and find his way to the Egyptian Pyramids. Santiago has to
Every song has a story to tell, and some contain hidden stories or lessons, while others are completely blatant. In Billy Joel’s song, “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” he does not hesitate to be very obvious with what he tries to prove, which is how all of the events in his song contribute to one large fire. I chose to remediate Joel’s song because it spoke to me with historical context. When researching the song, I read a majority of the history behind it and decided to reflect upon it in a visual picture collage, combining a majority of the elements he mentions with pictures--all circled around a fire in the middle. I decided to also make red-dyed cupcakes reflecting the fire Joel speaks of and ice them with a flame, yet placing an X over it,

Alice Walker is a world renowned novelist, poet, short story author and political activist, with works including The Temples of my Familiar and In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens. Yet Ms. Walker’s most critically acclaimed novel remains The Color Purple. The Color Purple tells the complex tale African American women, their brutal living conditions, everyday abuse, and their instinct to survive. The Color Purple was an immediate success due to its simple writing style, the intricate storyline, and compelling characters. In 1983 The Color Purple was recognized for these very reasons and graciously awarded The Pulitzer Prize For Fiction. Every year several Pulitzer Awards are handed out to distinguished
In a few verses of this song, Jeff Lynne sings in the background. Once the basic song format is played, the electric guitar comes in more dominantly. Near the end of the song, Tom Petty belts out the lyrics and background vocalists echo him. The song ends with the background vocalists singing in unison, and all of the instruments slowly fading into silence. Throughout the song, Tom Petty’s voice matches the tempo perfectly.

The ending of the song is a repeat of the chorus, but they changed it up a bit. When the boy begins singing the chorus the band is playing loud and clear with backup vocals singing along. It repeats through the chorus again with just the boy's voice and the piano in the background. People are beginning to disappear, to leave from the song. When the song finally comes to the end he says the last line, “A little unsteady” (55). All of the noise around him cuts out leaving just his voice to say those words. The boy’s voice being left alone to sing the last line of the song is a representation of what has happened, it is all over now. His parents went through with the divorce and his fear of being split between the two people he loves most in the
Bohemian Rhapsody begins with a slow intro where Freddie Mercury is questioning his own morals and life. He claims how claustrophobic he feels in this life. Then he begins to address his mother, and explains how he killed a man, and starts to explain how his life had just began, how everything was beginning to looking up but he believes that what will come to him will come to him because he took another life.
