Clint Eastwood once said, “I have a very strict gun control policy: if there's a gun around, I want to be in control of it.” Given all the gun violence that has happened over the last century, it has been shown that many people do not know how to control their own guns. In the year of 1364 the first record of use of a firearm was documented. Since then, hundreds upon hundreds of guns have been made. With that hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives from those guns. On September 17, 1787, the US Constitution was written as by-laws for the United States. On June 21, 1788, the constitution was ratified to include the second amendment, which allows a U.S. citizen the right to bear arms. In today’s society, the 21st century, there …show more content…
Many people use guns today as protection, to protect their families and loved ones. Putting in stricter gun laws could make it harder for these U.S. citizens who, by the Constitution have every right to own a gun, want to protect their families. Many people who use guns for violence, are criminals who have already or plan to use the gun or guns they have in their possession in a violent way. Putting in stricter gun laws can make it harder for someone to legally obtain a gun, but if a person plans on committing a crime with a gun, if they do not want to get it legally they will get it illegally. They are not worried about breaking the law to get a gun because soon they will commit a serious crime with that gun. As for the U.S. citizens who use guns for protection there is always that possibility of the criminal breaking into their house and they have no self defensive because of stricter gun …show more content…
Aaron Bandler stated in the Daily Wire “In 1976, D.C. implemented a law that banned citizens from owning guns, as only police officers were allowed to carry firearms. According to prosecutor Jeffrey Shapiro, the results were not good. Annual homicides rose from 188 in 1976 to 364 in 1988, and then increased even further to 454 in 1993. The gun ban was struck down by the Supreme Court in District of Columbia v. Heller, and homicides have steadily declined since then to 88 yearly murders in 2012.” To this day D.C. still has some of the most strict gun laws in the United States, but is still categorized as one most dangerous areas in America. “Since 1950, nearly 99 percent of mass public shootings have occurred in gun-free zones. The terror attack in Orlando, FL and the shooting that murdered singer Christina Grimmie in June also took place in gun-free zones. The reason is obvious: deranged murderers want to be in a position to murder as many as possible, so they target areas where they're least likely to find armed resistance, which happen to be gun-free zones. (Bandler, Aaron).” If we did not have guns, how would our military and police forces protect our country? Everyday men and women go into battle and into their work force with guns to protect our country. Image what would happen if the military ,who go to war to fight off all the countries that want to harm us, did not
Gun control has recently brought a massive uproar to the United States after several tragedies combined mass murder with firearms. Some argue that guns are meant to be used for our protection and it takes someone to pull the trigger while others believe that guns are intended to cause serious harm or death to the intended target. The right to own a firearm stems from the second amendment of the constitution and states that a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to bear arms, shall not be infringed. The first piece of gun control legislature that was passed in the United States was in 1911 when Sullivan’s Law passed to make buying or carrying a handgun without a permit a felony
America needs to institute, and initiate gun control laws throughout the entire nation. But not everybody who inhabits the United States believes in regulating arms. Those who are against establishing gun laws argue that gun control directly infringes upon their “right to bear arms” granted to them by the 2nd Amendment. Anti gun control supporters, such as the National Rifle Association, often claim that the act of regulating guns is a sufficient reason why such an Amendment was introduced in the constitution; to protect themselves from any and all forms of violation of civil liberties and freedom. Supporters of anti gun laws are unwilling to welcome any interpretations of the 2nd Amendment that do not match up “word for word,” as was written in the Bill of Rights.
When America first became a country branching away from Great Britain, firearms played a huge role. After the war, firearms were still an every day thing for civilians, using them for hunting and or self-defense. With the second amendment has come with a controversial topic when it comes to regulating guns in our country. This topic affects the United States nationally, as well as local state to state as they try to regulate how guns should be handled. From the core amendment values such as the second amendment have changed how the amendment is viewed overtime, so has the evolution of guns and how they are viewed in today’s society.
The second amendment of The Constitution of the Unites States rules that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” In recent years this has become a highlighted and popular discussion topic throughout people and media. Typical with American media the subject of gun control is visited with broad stroked of red and the use of fear tactics while completely ignoring the complicated and underling positives and negatives of public access to firearms and the benefits and risks associated with this freedom. Most people do not carry a weapon at all and may question others who do because of the moderately low risk of being a victim of a crime. Those how carry however like to think “Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.”
There are currently over 200 million guns in use, which means obtaining a gun in the United States mustn't be that hard. If gun usage could be regulated more by banning certain unneeded weapons to the public and requiring a more in depth background check, than miss usage of guns, and deaths caused by them would decrease. However, already existing laws need to be enforced and harsher penalties for those who don't follow the laws. If the country would agree on certain legislation for gun control, than The United States could be a much safer
Over the past couple of years, being able to access a gun has been too easy for criminals. They have been able to easily pass background checks. This is why there needs to be stronger background checks to protect people from criminals. Also, gun laws do not need to be too strong so that no one can protect themselves. “In 2002 at the Appalachian School of Law [in Grundy, Virginia]. Hearing shots, two students went to their cars, got their guns and restrained the shooter until police arrested him”(Guns Save Lives). This is an example of why having guns could help. If there were laws that prevented these 2 students to own guns, the whole situation could have been worse. There could have been more deaths but instead, since they had guns, they were able to control the situation and protect themselves. Lastly, Americans have always had the right to bear arms. “The right to bear arms has been a long American tradition. From the time the colonists settled on North American soil, Americans have held weapons to protect themselves”(The History of the Right to Bear Arms). If there were always laws then America would not have been America. Changing this would just lead more people to be mad and cause more problems. It will be better off if the laws remain the same. Limiting the amount of gun laws will allow people to own a gun and protect themselves and having stricter background checks will make it harder for a criminal to acquire a
America is the most well armed nation in the world, with American citizens owning about 270 million of the world’s 875 million firearms (Marshall). Indeed, this is more than a quarter of the world’s registered firearms. The reason why Americans own so many guns is because of the Second Amendment, which states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (Rauch) This amendment guarantees U.S. citizens the right to have firearms. Since this amendment is relatively vague, it is up for interpretation, and is often used by gun advocates to argue for lenient gun laws. Hence, gun control is a frequently discussed controversial topic in
Since the first manufactured gun, gun control laws have been an ongoing issue in American society. The United States Constitution supports the right for individuals to own firearms. The second amendment states "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." The amendment does not have regulation on gun use. Both state and federal laws help control the use of guns in America. In analyzing America’s gun laws, several are extremely lax and prove to be detrimental to society.
You go to grab your gun, but quickly realize it that guns had been taken away from all citizens in the United States and you no longer have one. This scenario is just an example of the many things gun activist are trying to explain to the fellow Americans. Jonathan Gottschall said, “ Part of why I was attracted to guns was self-defense.” Guns are a way of self defense to several. Taking guns away from people would be like taking away the wheels of a car. You can’t drive a car without wheels just as most can not protect themselves without guns. The vice president of the NRA says, “ The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun.” Let me inform you by saying that the people in the NRA are law abiding citizens. What the vice president means by saying that is it takes a guy who follows the laws and is a qualified gun owner to kill a “bad guy”. Taking away guns will not stop criminals from committing crimes. Only about 13% of crimes are gun related. One major thing firearms are used for are hunting game. Many people live off game and it is one of their only sources of food. Nearly 35% of Americans hunt game for food (David Draper, Fieldandstream.com). Taking guns away from these people would be taking away their food.
The United Sates has one of the highest rates of gun related violence. The major factors on gun violence are the powerful types of guns expressly designed for killing people and the lack of preventing all gun violence. America talks about death by gun violence. Gun control can come from all types of things in the world. 240,000 guns are given to minors without parents even knowing that they have one. The gun owners can sell a gun without having a background check and will not get in trouble for it. According to Gutierrez, “Anybody will sell you a gun…I mean no matter what, if you want a gun and you show them the money, and tell them you want to buy it, he’s going to definitely sell it to you” (3). The U.S. should have stricter gun control laws
The constitution of America, one of the most famous documents today, founded by our founding fathers on September 25, 1789 and ratified December 15th, of 1791. Within this famous document is our Bill of Rights including the second amendment stating,” A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (Gun control laws) In todays society, one of the biggest issues argued politically has to be gun control due to some of the recent mass shootings and rise in gun violence. For centuries, guns have been used for many reasons including hunting, competition, and most importantly self-defense. 67% of people in todays society believe
Gun control had been a phenomenal issue in our country. In December 15, 1791 the second amendment established in the top ten amendments in the Constitution by James Madison. The amendment stated that people have a rights to bear arm to protect themself, their loved ones and their property. To legally get a gun you have to be 21 years old and over, without
Good afternoon fellow colleagues, I am here to tell you why we need stricter laws and regulations on gun control.
Since the gun ban was struck down, murders in the District have steadily gone down, from 186 in 2008 to 88 in 2012, the lowest number since the law was enacted in 1976.” (Jeffery Shapiro, Wall Street Journal)
Gun laws is a controversial topic on both sides of the legislative. We have some that argue the right to bear arms set in the Constitution of the United States and then we have the epidemic of gun violence amongst innocent people that are advocating for stricter gun laws and even the banning on assault weapons. There are many points that can be argued from each side of the leglasitive with evidence to back the claims that they are stating with regards to gun laws. The right to bear arms is considered to be a pillar of the constitution and some people feel that it is a right that should not be infringed upon. The right to bear arms, a right that won us freedom and also has protected us for years. But, as the nation evolves it is evident that our second amendment could probably stand to evolve with it. When I think of gun laws I often tend to take the middle of the road approach to who should own a gun and what should happen if you possess a gun illegally. Former President Barack Obama made the plea for stricter gun control. His thought was that there need to be a broader background check as well as exhortation to federal agencies so that existing laws are fully enforced. But how does what President Obama was trying to inforce take a stance when in Texas, gun owners were taking full advantage of the new right of open carry. I think that the open carry law needed to be investigated a little bit more before being put in place. But, the good thing I guess that came out
