Society has always secretly rooted for “The Outlaw”. Whether it be in a book or a movie, we are drawn to the danger in the bad guys. What exactly does it take to be considered an outlaw in American society though? A person who does things because they think they are doing something to better humans, they are trying to protect themselves, and they are trying to get revenge on someone who did them wrong. People are so drawn to our outlaws because it gives us a thrill to watch someone do something we wish we could but don't because it's not in the norm of society. In the book “All Souls” there are numerous outlaw figures but many movies over time have been centered around the outlaw theme which I will talk about because it shows how much society loves a good Robin Hood tale.
The biggest outlaw in history, Jesus Christ, is the most popular example of how much we love the outsider. The story of how God sent his only son down to Earth to realise mankind of their sins, whether religious or not, is a well known tale. Coming to Earth and telling the Romans that their religion was wrong and that they all were going to Hell if they did not change was something that had never been done before. He traveled throughout Israel trying to convert people to a whole new religion to help mankind. He was seen as crazy and as a threat for a long time but he thought he was helping humans from becoming corrupt. This fits my definition of an outlaw precisely, Jesus believed he was helping but for a
“It was a red hunting hat, with one of these very, very long peaks… It only cost me a buck. The way I wore it, I swung the old peak way around to the back- very corny. I’ll admit, but I liked it that way. I looked good in it that way.” (Salinger, 21)
Through use of characters and repeated scenes and concepts, Harper Lee Highlights the importance of integrity in her book, To kill a mockingbird. She explores the aspect of integrity through different characters, in particular, Atticus, Scout and Calpurnia. Integrity is developed with age and maturity and the character of Scout supports this statement throughout the book and at times, Scout displays a lack of integrity and experiences negative consequences for it. In the dinner table scene, Scout is shown to lack integrity because of her immaturity. Her guest, Walter Cunningham is shamed by Scout when she questions Walter about his eating habits. When Calpurnia takes scout away from the table she says "That boy's yo comp'ny and if he wants to eat up the table-cloth you let him, you hear?"
Ray compares common values and stances between both outlaws and official heroes. Outlaws are often portrayed as people who are against a unified society. Ray even goes so far as to talk about outlaws “who worked to remain idle, unemployed, and unattached” (453). He also quotes a statement from a man who envies the poor and the criminals due to the amount of “freedom” that they have. Many people do not want to have so many responsibilities in their lives. They want the ability to think for themselves and have their own opinions without others influencing them. Also, due to having no responsibility, the outlaw hero is able to be freer in his adventures and throughout his life due to the
In S.E Hinton’s novel, The Outsiders, the greasers do a lot of good and bad things nevertheless they still are heroes. Johnny Cade, Ponyboy Curtis and Dallas Winston are all heroes.
Power is too overpowering sometimes especially for class, gender, and race. TKAM is a book written by Harper Lee in 1960. Mayella Ewell is a white, 19-year-old woman, who accused Tom Robinson, who is Negro, for rape. The book takes place in Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s in the South during the Great Depression where there was a recession. Mayella is not a powerful character based on her class, gender, and race compared to Tom Robinson.
Even though the ride to Yosemite was grueling, the main character learned a valuable life lesson that he will carry for the rest of his life. The main character ventured on a long, tiring ride, learned an important lesson, and discovered how they play together. After his bike ride to Yosemite he learns his lessons on the difficulties of life. He will carry the lessons he learned with him onto future adventures. He will also never venture onto such a grueling task based on other people's views.
In the community of Maycomb Atticus is criticized by the way he talks to people and how responsible he could be. When Atticus had called Mayela ma'am and Ms. Mayella got offended. She became offended because she thought atticus was mocking her, she had criticized him for the way he talked to her. The way he was talking to her he was trying to show respect and was trying to be respectful to Mayella. "I got somethin' to say an' then I ain't gonna say no more. That nigger yonder took advantage of me an' if you fine fancy gentlemen don't wanta do nothin' about it then you're all yellow stinkin' cowards, stinkin' cowards, the lot of you. Your fancy airs don't come to nothin'—your ma'amin' and Miss Mayellerin' don't come to nothin', Mr. Finch-" This quote shows that Mayella is somewhat offended by Atticus calling her ma'am and that she doesn't expect much of him.
Former major league baseball player Tommy Lasorda once said, “The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination.” In Laura Hillenbrand’s nonfiction book Unbroken, Louie Zamperini demonstrates this quote with his determination to survive the challenges he faced before, during, and after the war. This determination helped Louie face and overcome the challenges presented to him during the war.
In stories of all kinds, a common theme is “choices”. Choosing what to do with your life, choosing who you want to be with, choosing to defy stereotypes and doing things nobody would expect you to do. In our English course this year, we have read the story Everyone Talked Loudly in Chinatown and watched the film Into the Wild, both of which deal with important choices in life.
What motivated the Gunslinger to chase the man in black across mountains and deserts? One reason could be that he wanted to seek the approval of parents, mentors, and friends. “‘Good night, father,’ Roland said. ‘Good night, son,’ his father said absently, and began unbuttoning his shirt. In his mind, the boy was already gone” (King 106). When Roland was young, he did not get much attention from his father nor his mother, although his father's opinion clearly matters more to hime. Naturally, to show his father that he is an important person, he wanted to do something big like becoming a man. To become a Gunslinger, in his city, is a very respectable position. Once you become a Gunslinger, you are able to go on quests. He took the test when
Atticus Finch is a lawyer in Maycomb County. He took a stand for Tom Robinson during the trial against Mayella Ewell. Despite him knowing that he is going to lose the case, he still has the courage to take a stand for him. Because of his great acts, it makes sense for Atticus Finch to take stand for Tom Robinson.
Have you ever wondered what person truly represents the meaning of courage and strength? That person is Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. The reader appreciates and looks up to Atticus because he demonstrates his mental endurance and courage through standing up to society and doing what he thinks is right, and the song “I Won’t Back Down” buy Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers explains that these qualities are admirable which is why Atticus is such a likeable and relatable character.
Who feels scared when she faces bears, upset when she misses her family while away at the mill, accomplished when she saves Bridged
Frank Abagnale’s life is a good example of a successful outlaw. After being deprived of a family and feel the injustices of the system, he decided to follow an outlaw pathway in order to survive. His greedy made him to wish for more, and eventually he cashed 2.5 million dollars al around the world. The major part of his success as an outlaw were his abilities, and the way he used them to escape the police. This character’s abilities were beyond a regular person because he was always one step forward than any other individual. Although Frank Abagnale always did everything for self-interest, he changed his attitude after being in prison. His imprisonment changed his life and his thinking towards the world. Here is when he became the heroic icon
The most obvious thing that stood out to me after watching these two videos, is that history seems to be notorious for being rewritten and misconstrued every step of the way. The first video I watched addressed some of the modern misinterpretations of the medieval outlaw. It was abundantly clear that the heroic and chivalrous we have of Robin Hood and other noble outliers of justice is a highly romanticized and inaccurate depiction of these outlaws. Through the years of the medieval age, the term outlaw took on many varying legal definitions. In certain communities and under their current laws being declared an outcast was an extremely serious and polarizing title. Then as the laws of the land began to shift, it was quite common being stated
