Othello has just come to me in a fit of sadness after killing his wife Desdemona. “My wife! my wife! what wife? I have no wife./ Oh, insupportable! Oh, heavy hour! / Methinks it should be now a huge eclipse / Of sun and moon, and that th' affrighted globe / Should yawn at alteration.”(5.2.111-115) he exclaimed as he bursted into my chamber. How twisted a man must be to kill his love and mourn her death just minutes after. I found his word choice very troubling, as he described how the earth and space and universe is all off balance now that she is no longer apart of it.
Inside each of us, there is a seed of good and evil since it is a constant struggle for us to
To some people, power is authority, and to some, it is capability. To all, it is a metaphorical concept that is individually assigned by one's own view of a situation. George R.R. Martin targeted this concept precisely in A Clash of Kings when he wrote, “Power resides where men believe it resides. No more and no less.” This quote ties in nicely to Othello by William Shakespeare. Power seems to be a relevant theme in this story, although the question of who help the power is also very prominent. The insightful quote from Martin helps us determine this. To defend this quote with evidence from Othello, one must first understand how to obtain ‘power’, then understand why the characters thought Othello was the one in power, furthermore, one may
An example of this is that when Othello and Emilia are talking, Emilia’s responses are quick and straightforward. This makes her appear direct in that instance while Othello uses long and drawn out sentences. This can be interpreted to be caused by his jealousy and presents him as very uncertain since he repeats himself many times. Shakespeare uses other literary strategies such as inverted syntax. For example, Iago tells Othello “Myself the crying fellow did pursue” (Act 2, Scene 3, Line 229). As Shakespeare incorporate inverted syntax into his writing, he is projecting more excitement and drama to the characters and ultimately the story as a whole. If Shakespeare would have merely written “I pursued the crying fellow”, there would not be as much meaning as when the meaning the inverted syntax helps to produce.
“Othello” is a play written by william shakespeare in which a Iago plays a chess game with all the other characters, as if they were chessmen. Honest Iago as he goes by gets everyone to trust him, but in reality he controls their fate. He uses their ambitiousness and passion to implant false accusation to motivate them to do whatever he wants them to do. Iago pretending as if his everyone best friend, in which he set them up for their own downfall. Iago manipulates each character in the play by taking advantage of their own doubts and weakness against them.
Distinguished guests and citizens of Cyprus and Venice, it is with great sadness we gather today to say goodbye and pay our respects to Othello, a man who was of great heart. The common ache the we collectively share is reflected in this mornings, a day of great sorrow, dull, grey, rainy sky. For those of us who liked Othello and now grieve in his tragic passing knew him in the many differing titles he held; leader, warrior, husband. But I, knew him as a colleague but above all else a friend. This man who has departed from us shall long be remembered as a man of immense contradictions. A fearless warrior on the battle field, a proud and passionate man and a complex and restless character. However, in my opinion, which I’m sure is shared by
It is commonly agreed upon that the foundation of Othello has the interworking of good and evil at play. However, within the tree of evil, the branch of self-doubt extend its reaches into the mind and the heart of both Othello and Iago. Iago’s motivation to destroy Othello’s marriage to Desdemona, stems from delusions of an affair between Othello and Iago’s wife and from injured pride due to Othello not considering him for a promotion. At this point, Iago is able to plant seeds of doubt in Othello’s head toward Othello’s marriage to Desdemona because Othello himself harbors low self-esteem as he knows he is viewed as being an outsider by the Venetians because he is a moor and also because he is not of noble tradition. Such insecurities displayed
William Shakespeare introduces the title character of the play Othello as a man who is well respected by the citizens of Venice. Othello is an esteemed military man whose conquests have added to Venice’s glory. He has always lived in the public eye and been held in high regard. When he is confronted with the possibility of his new bride’s infidelity, Othello does not know how to confront and control these new emotions. Othello’s lack of understanding of his personal self and emotions leads to his downfall and tragedy within the play. Shakespeare uses Othello to illustrate that one’s public reputation holds no merit if he is unable to understand and confront his emotions and personal actions.
Critics have debated the significance of Othello’s race in terms of portraying his identity for a long time. The negative connotations of “blackness” have led to the creation of many racial constructs associated with the “Moor”; this denigration has infused the opinions of many critics, such as Albert Gerard, proposing that Othello’s “negroid physiognomy” reaches down to the “deepest levels of personality” and that he is a “barbarian”. However, many other critics like Edward Berry and Martin Orkin believe that colour is merely a “surface indicator” compared to the outward virtue of beneficence, defining identity. Beneficence could be defined by the will to practice good acts, in conjunction with the aversion of practicing evil, and the prevention and removal of evil.
Othello is a man who is respected as a General in the Army. Brabanzio even considered him a friend. Thanks to Iago planting a seed in Brabanzio ear about his daughter, Desdemona, Brabanzio accused Othello of taking his daughter away from him by means of drugs or poision. Othello has fought on the battle-field and now finds himself on a very different kind of battle-field. He finds himself in a position of being forced to defend his honor, friendship and his love. There has been accusations made against Othello, so in a room filled with signors, masters, the Duke, and Brabanzio, Othello has a strategy of battlement in his own way. He tells the Duke to send for Desdemona, “Send for the lady to the Sagittary, And let her
Illusion versus reality is an easily recognised theme in the play Othello, written by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare effectively combines illusion with reality in the play, Othello. The illusion easily distorts the reality of the characters and their thoughts and actions. These illusions are evident in the main characters of Iago, Michael Cassio and Othello. This review will discuss the illusion versus reality that is seen in the play. Illusion being judgements of an individual from what is seen from the outside, and reality being the truth and what is on the inside. This review will also discuss the various ways in which the theme of reality versus illusion are evident and how the value of the play Othello, is tied to its concern with
Master Cepperello lived his life as a scoundrel who spent his days lying, gambling, cursing and deceiving everyone he met. Cepperello being a Notary and accomplished liar, the people in town entrusted him with their money and business which included creating false documents and lying in court if needed. Cepperello went to great lengths to provoke hatred and bad feelings among everyone, longing for the happiness that arose from this evil he would create.
In civilisations today it is not uncommon for people to take note of someone that is of African descent in a high position in society. This is something that is not uncommon in past centuries as well. Othello is a romantic tragedy about a couple, in the Shakespearian era, that undergoes trials that test their faith in one another. In the end, they are not able to stand up to the challenge and fall, or are pushed, into the cold embrace of death. Long before the grim reaper takes either of them it is demonstrated how Othello, the husband, is affected by his African heritage in Desdemona’s, the wife’s, caucasian society. In this well-written play, composed by the author and playwright William Shakespeare, uses indirect characterization, euphemisms and specific monologues to reinforce the idea that even though Othello is a high ranking officer and skilled warrior he is still subject to racial prejudice from his colleagues, and this proves that skin color can be an influence on life no matter the attributes of an individual during this particular period in history.
A personal experience that can relate to a scene from Shakespeare’s “Othello”, is when my high school friend Devin Tolar was stabbed to death from a man that was jealous of his wife having an affair with my friend Devin. Devin was 17 years old when he worked his current job under the management of the man’s wife. After the events that led to what eventually led to an affair, the women full of guilt confessed to her husband that she had committed adultery. At the time the women was in her late 20’s making the situation even worse than it truly was. The man full of rage immediately started searching for Devin to confront and “handle the situation”. Once the man found Devin the argument turned from a verbal argument to a physical altercation leading
The lines in this scene begin with Emilie coming on stage with full grief and rage because she had just found out that Othello had killed Desdemona with his bare hands.
This quote shows mainly that he was really important both for the army and for the war. Regarding now Oedipus, he is a king and he is respected by the Thebans,
