“When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home.” Ponyboy thought. (page 1), Sodapop Curtis, from the book, The Outsiders, is caring, because he dropped out of school for Ponyboy, worries about Pony, and helps Darry and Pony stop fighting/arguing. The Outsiders was a book written by S.E. Hinton. The Outsiders explains how social classes matter in this town. There are two groups, the Greasers and the Socs. They live totally different lives and don’t get along. And sometimes Socs jump Greasers occasionally. But luckily Greasers always have each others back. Also, Greasers view Socs like they have everything they need or want. Like cool cars, money, …show more content…
Soda shows carness when he writes him a letter saying, “... I wish you’d come back and turn yourselves in, but I guess you can’t because Johnny might get hurt…” This quote was on page 82, chapter 5. This quote means that Soda really misses Pony and he worries about what will happen to him. Soda would be scared if Pony gets hurt and that shows that he doesn’t want anything to happen to him. Soda wants Pony to be okay and cares if he gets injured. And, on page 158 in chapter 10, Soda says, “Hey Ponyboy!, he yelped and leaped for me, but Darry caught him. No rough stuff little buddy, So Soda had to content himself with bouncing up and down on the bed, and punching me in the shoulder” This second quote is when Pony gets a concussion and can’t get to rough. So, Darry has to talk to Soda about just talking and being careful with Ponyboy. “Soda leaps and yelps” This is because he was worried about his little brother, and when he woke up, Soda was so relieved to see Pony he just couldn’t help his excitement. Soda worried about Pony and cared what the end result was. If he wouldn’t have cared, something tragic could have happened. Everyone should care about their family and want them to be healthy and that is what Soda …show more content…
He worries what will become of his brothers if they keep fighting. Soda wants to help and finally does something about it. “Darry yells to much and tries too hard and takes everything to seriously, and Ponyboy, you don’t think to much, you don’t realize all Darry’s giving up is just to give you a chance he missed out on.” Sodapop said, on page 175 & 176 in chapter 12. This explains how Soda hates to hear his brothers fight. He doesn’t want to listen to them bicker and argue all day. He finally says something and Darry and Pony about how annoying and stressful it is to try not to listen to them. So, Soda explains to them what they do because no one can know what they act like until someone tells them. They listen to what he is saying, understanding what they appear and act like. After Soda is done talking, Darry and Ponyboy feel bad about what their brother has to listen to everyday. So in the end, Darry and Ponyboy accept what their brother is saying and agree to try to stop fighting. If it wasn't for Soda, he would still be listening to them argue. And because he cared enough to make them stop, he did something to change the way his brothers think. Which was a good
When Ponyboy was in Windrixville, hiding with johnny, Sodapop sent a letter with Dally, Sodapop states “Darry and me ran nuts when you ran out like that, Darry is awful sorry hit you. You know he didn’t mean it.”(81) Although Darry had not written the letter he was clearly sensitive about his feelings towards his brother Ponyboy. In addition for him being the strong and tough guy everybody knows, showing his emotions for his brother clearly proves that Darry is sensitive. To add onto that fact, he demonstrates that he truly is sensitive to his brother because he truly regrets his actions and he feels very repentant for Ponyboy. Furthermore, Darry portrayed the characteristic trait of being sensitive was when Ponyboy came back from Windrixville, Ponyboy states “ Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying. He didn’t make a sound, but tears were running down his cheeks.” Crying is one way to show that someone is sensitive because sensitive is basically when you get emotional sometimes or take things way too seriously and crying demonstrates that very well. Darry shows that he is sensitive because he really was sorry for Ponyboy and he was so sensitive that he started crying. Darry also shows sensitivity when Pony came back, Darry states, “Oh Pony, I thought I lost you… Like we did mom and dad.”(98) This statement strongly shows that
He always wants to give him the life he wanted but couldn’t have one way to make sure of that is that Darry always makes sure Pony gets good grades by checking his homework. This way pony can succeed in school and not be a dropout like soda. He wants him to be the one that can make a difference in the world, and Darry realizes that, that person is pony. A quote from Ponyboy from the book is “I didn’t do to bad in math, because Darry checked my homework and made me study.”(Hinton
The Outsiders display how adversity can help people find the real meaning of actions. Ponyboy thinks that Darry doesn’t care about him and believes he’s too strict as said in this passage “Me and Darry just don't dig each other. I could never please him… He never hollered at Sodapop, even when Soda dropped out of school or got tickets for speeding.
Overall, Soda is caring in the story. Ponyboy gives the reader a reason to believe that Sodapop cares about him when he says “I hated to worry Sodapop” (pg. 16). This is explaining how Sodapop worries about Ponyboy, which shows how much Soda cares. Another instance of Sodapop’s helpfulness is being seen when he nurtured Johnny. “Soda held him and pushed his hair back out of his eyes. “It’s okay, Johnnycake, they’re gone now. It's okay.”” (pg. 33). Sodapop could have walked away from Johnny. Instead, he held him and reassured him.
“He’s not as tall as Darry, and he’s a little slimmer, but he has a finely drawn, sensitive face that somehow manages to be reckless and thoughtful at the same time”(Hinton, 7). In The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, which takes place in the 1960s, Sodapop is the middle brother of the Curtis Family. Their parents died, so the oldest brother Darry is in charge, but they are at risk of staying together as a family. Darry and the youngest brother Ponyboy argue often, leaving Sodapop left in the middle, wanting it to stop. Along with the burden of his arguing brothers, Soda also struggles with his breakup with Sandy, a girl he thought he would marry. Sodapop is a greaser who takes pride in himself and does not want to lose his reputation. He is a very handsome sixteen, almost seventeen year old. He dropped out of school to help support his family. Soda is a positive family member who shows complex emotions and thoughts throughout the book and has a big personality and heart, and shows us many different sides.
In this quote it shows Darry working and Ponyboy saying things about what Darry do for Ponyboy, “There was another column about just Darry and Soda and me: how Darry worked on two jobs at once and made good at both of them, and about his outstanding record at school”(Hinton 108).This shows how much work Darry puts to taking care of Ponyboy and Sodapop. This also shows how qualified Darry is to take care of them and how he has outstanding records at school.Another quote of Darry working and Soda “I could have waited to go to the movies until Darry or Sodapop got off work.” ( Hinton 3).This shows that Darry always works and tries to make the time for Ponyboy. It also shows how Darry let’s him go to the movies and lets him do what he likes to do and doesn’t mind. In the story Darry always worked very hard and worked too hard with two jobs at a time and tried to make the best of it and made sure Ponyboy got a good education and had a chance like he had to go to college and didn’t mess it all up because of all this
Soda is thoughtful, funny and reckless. Soda shows he is thoughtful because when Johnny gets jumped by Soc's. Soda was one of the first to get to Johnny. When dally sends them to the church to hide
However, even though Sodapop seems as if he is jovial all the time, there are times where he breaks. When Ponyboy provides more insight about Soda, he says, “Dropout, made me think of some poor dumb-looking hoodlum wandering the streets breaking out street lights-it didn't fit my happy-go-lucky brother at all” (page 23), it conveys the fact everyone has their rough times but it doesn't mean he is not happy-go-lucky. In fact, his cheerful and happy attitude, and his sociable personality is what would draw people to him. Thus, within the gang, Sodapop’s presence would make the group lively and boisterous but with his many unique traits, the one that grabs everyone's attention is his cheerfulness and his ability to be so
Soda tried his best to make peace in the house between Ponyboy and Darry. He does a good job paying attention to detail, analyzing what he sees, and taking sides when it’s needed. He like many of us have flaws. To me I think his flaws are that he is very shy in the book and did not play a big role in the novel or movie. I believe if he were more relevant in the novel, that there would have been more peace.
Throughout the novel, Darry is Determined. Ponyboy and sodapop have a determined mindset to them like their brother, yet Darry looks down and turns around. He turns to make sure the boys are okay. Darry represents a strong father figure, by going to the gym including keeping up with his two brothers making sure the stay healthy. (Hinton 1-4). Darry make sures the boys are okay because
In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, the author creates a rant that reveals Ponyboy’s feelings about the life struggles of his fellow gang members as compared to the carefree lives of the Socs, their rivals. It reveals Ponyboy’s anger and allows the author to show that Ponyboy deeply cares for his fellow gang members and strongly despises the Socs. When Ponyboy and Johnny are at the movies, they meet Cherry and Marcia, and even though the girls are Socs, they engage in friendly and honest discussions about the lives of the two rival gangs. When Cherry asks Ponyboy what Darry, his brother, is like, he becomes angry and eventually redirects his indignation at the reality of their lives. He begins by repeatedly exclaiming, “It ain’t fair!” and follows it with a long mental list of specific problems that each fellow gang member has been experiencing (Hinton 38).
(Hinton 3)Because of his parents’ death, Ponyboy and Soda try not to be bad and they do not get in trouble because they can’t afford it. Living without their parents are
After Pony returns home from the hospital after Dally’s death and is caught smoking, Darry reprimands him, but says, “‘Maybe you can be a little neater, huh, little buddy?’” Even though Darry was scolding Ponyboy before about smoking, he does it in a gentler way. Darry has recognized that his little brother has become extremely depressed over the deaths of their friends over the past few days. Darry reaches out to Ponyboy by calling him ‘little buddy’ because that is reserved only for Sodapop. This heals some of Ponyboy’s pain and allows Ponyboy to have a better view on his life.
In the story, love is necessary for overcoming adversities. “Darry love me? […] Soda was wrong for once […]. Darry doesn't love anyone or anything […] I didn't hardly think of him as being human.” After considering Darry’s rough nature with him, even after getting jumped, he believes Darry does not love him. Without love and care from his family, Ponyboy is downtrodden and faces many privations and conflicts alone. Similarly, Sodapop faces a lack of brotherly love coupled with the fact that his girlfriend “didn’t love him like he thought she did” that leads Soda to overwhelming depression and anxiety that grows until he runs away. Isolated, Sodapop goes mad, both with fury, and with confusion. Even those who appear to have privileged lives
Pony thinks Darry doesn't care for him mistreats him. But at the end of chapter one, soda says that Darry really loves him a lot. What evidence is there for each view? How might these two views be reconciled?
