Though there are and have been many different leaders; we all have someone that we see fit best as to what we think a leader is. Everyone has different opinions of what a leader looks like; some people may think that some are good and others may think they are bad. A good leader is someone who is inspiring, responsible, doing what is best and right, and someone who takes consideration to everything they do, whether they like it or not. A leader is someone who can take immediate charge and control over a group and lead them to greatness and success. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, Ralph is the leader based on a vote. He is one of the most responsible and willing characters and shows great leadership characteristics. He has courage, determination, and shows responsibility on the island. They are stranded on an island with no parental supervision due to their plane being shot down. They all have to strive to survive and work together to be rescued. Ralph seems to be the best fit leader for the group of boys, as he has a lot of the characteristics that a leader needs. He took it upon himself to be that leader figure which is courageous and a big duty to fill. Ralph was worried and focused on everything instead of just one thing like the others. He was worried about food, shelter, and being rescued while others were mainly only focused on one or two of those. In the novel, Ralph is the leader figure that everyone looks up to for the most part. He is the only one that is in it for everyone’s best interests. In real life, we all look for someone to be a leader figure to us. I believe that this is like the school system. As much as many people dislike it, teachers are only there to try and better a person’s future and be there for them. The school system is a tool to make life greater and to make something of
Leadership is a very important characteristic which consists of several unique qualities. It can be found in families, among friends, at work, and within everyday activities. Good leadership can be very productive and can create a positive atmosphere. There are several qualities that one possesses to be a great leader. In the book, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, Ralph is the best leader. Throughout the novel Ralph shows initiative, determination, and responsibility in a way that makes him the best leader
Ralph possesses the leadership skill of responsibility. Responsibility is being accountable for something or someone. In the first chapter of Lord of the Flies Ralph takes on the responsibility of being the leader on the island and the responsibility of setting rules. “We’ve got to have special people for looking after the fire. Any day there may be a ship out there…and if we have a signal going they’ll come and take us off. And another thing. We ought to have more rules. Where the conch is, that’s a meeting. The same up here as down there.” (Golding, pg.42) This quote shows how Ralph was taking on the responsibility of being the leader and of setting more rules. He establishes the rules and arranges meetings with his group to make sure everything is running smooth. Ralph also tries to make the “littluns” feel safe from the beast. Ralph tries to make sure that everyone on the island feels like they are safe
Ralph is the main protagonist in the story and he is the leader of the children on the island. Since Ralph was voted leader, he has the characteristics of leadership and he brings civilization and order to the story. Unlike the other boys, Jack and Simon, Ralph’s main focus is to get off the island instead of having fun. For example, Ralph tried constructing huts with Simon; meanwhile, the boys are playing and running off having fun. In the beginning of the story, Ralph’s power with the children was secure; however, towards the end, that power is being transferred to Jack. Ralph represents the
Being a leader is making sure that everything goes smoothly and knowing what's best for the group. I feel like Ralph is capable to do all of this. Ralph had everyone's best interest and not just himself. He listens to what the boys have to say and actually cares about their opinion. Leaders also have to be intelligent. Ralph is indubitably smart. We know this because he had the idea of starting a fire to get rescued for ‘The fire is the most important thing on the island. How can we ever be rescued except by luck, if we don’t keep a fire going?’(pg. 80). The boys are really petrified and Ralph knew that the only thing that would make them maintained is if they make shelter and he proposes ‘So, we need shelters as a sort of— Home’(pg. 52) This also shows that Ralph knows what is in need of priority. He is able to make the boys all listen to him due to the conche shell. Ralph basically formed a type of orderly government to make sure that everything is going the right way ‘We’ll have to have ’Hands up’ like at school’(pg. 33). This shows that he is natural leader and knows to get things done. Ralph thinks that all the boys should be treated equally especially Piggy since he gets pick on a lot ‘Ralph, looking with more understanding at Piggy, saw that he was hurt and crushed...Better Piggy
Through Ralph being the leader on the island, it shows him as a morally ambiguous character struggling with man’s innate evil. Ralph is clearly struggling to maintain calm when he says, “‘I was chief, and you were going to do what I said. You talk. But you can’t even build huts--then you go off hunting and let out the fire--’” (Golding 70-71). Ralph talks about him being chief in the past tense as if he no longer is because from the ways the boys are acting, he does not feel that he is being respected. Ralph is annoyed that instead of building shelter the boys play in the water and that instead of manning the fire, the only chance for the boys to be noticed, they decide hunting is more important than being rescued. Ralph means well by these orders, he wants to see that every boy on the island survives. At the same time he is struggling to be calm and he is not doing a good job at it. Also as the leader Ralph is not the one
Although Ralph seems to be more masculine than the others, he doesn't quite focused on trying to overpower the other boys on the island but tries to find a way to get rescued. Because of the fact that he tries to find a way to be rescued instead of trying to be the most dominant you can really consider him truly their leader because he symbolizes civil society.he focuses on what's important instead of selfish wants.
Ralphs strong personality is one of the many things that helped him with being the leader. Ralph made himself sound confident even when he was not so sure himself. Having that confidence made everyone believe that they could be saved from the island,
In a group, there are always people who prove to have better leadership skills then others. The strongest of these people can often influence the weaker people into following them. However, the strongest person is not necessarily the best leader as it is proven in William Golding's book, The Lord of the Flies. Although Ralph is the weaker person, he is still able to show a better understanding of people than Jack who is stronger. Ralph demonstrates his excellent leadership skills throughout the book by keeping the group in line, treating everyone with respect, and staying focused on getting rescued.
Ralph’s main goal was to help everyone get safely rescued from the island. He tried to motivate
Throughout the story The Lord of the Flies, Ralph has proven repeatedly and consistently that he is the greatest leader in the novel. Ralph was originally elected as a leader near the beginning of the story and even though he was titled “chief” he still let the other boys have a say and valued their opinions as a fair leader. He acts with the sake of the other boys in mind, and is viewed as a superb leader by other boys, too. Ralph is the obvious choice when it comes to deciding on the best leader. Ralph was voted into the position as chief through a democratic process, and he values what other people have to say.
Most of the boys respect him and listen to what he says, but some people like Jack refuse to listen to any suggestions he has for the group. The reader reacts to Ralph as someone we can put hope in to help rescue the boys. Ralph interacts with the boys as a determined leader. He thinks about all the survival things that the boys need to work on to benefit from being on the island. He is different from everyone else on the island in so many ways.
Leadership in the book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, is a role that is questioned throughout the book. Not that the role was ever questioned, but who had the role and the true leader was what was in question. Throughout the book, Ralph was the leader given that he was voted the leader by the group in the beginning. Ralph did show the most effective qualities with the goal that they were first set out to do as he was trying to be responsible, productive, and persistent. He tried to keep everything going to plan for his goal, as the leader for the group, of getting rescued from the island.
There are many reasons why Ralph would make a great leader for the boys and the first one is he is very levelheaded with the boys. He is also very responsible with the way to handle things. The text states,”.” This shows that Ralph would make a great leader because he feels that hunting is less important than them getting rescued. Others may argue that it is more important to go hunting so that the boys could get the food and nutrition they need form meat instead of fruit. This is one reason why I think that Ralph would make a very good leader.
No matter arguments to the alternative, Ralph is the true leader of this island. The reason that Ralph is the leader is because he shows more prominent leadership qualities. Ralph understands and has empathy for his group. He defends Piggy throughout the book on multiple occasions.
Leaders play an important role within a group. A good leadership can help a group perform better, where as a bad leadership could ultimately bring the group down. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding tells the story of a group of boys on an island left alone to survive without adult supervision after their plane crashed. The boys quickly elected Ralph to be the leader and Ralph appointed Jack to be the leader of the hunters. After a while, various accidents caused a power struggle between Jack and Ralph, which leads to Jack overthrowing Ralph in a coup. In the novel, the boys needed a leader that could help them stay alive and ultimately have them rescued. Ralph is an excellent leader for the boys since Ralph display responsibility and initiative.
