In A Thousand Splendid Suns, a novel written by Khaled Hosseini, the character Rasheed is a detached, domineering, and fraudulent man. His unloving and cruel behavior to those around him, specifically his first wife Mariam costs him his life. When his character is introduced to the readers, Rasheed seems unfazed with Mariam’s unwillingness to marry him, disregarding her depressive behavior. As they leave Herat after the wedding ceremony, Rasheed halfheartedly attempts to comfort her by saying “there now, girl” repeatedly (pg. 51).
