Ready Player One and Marriage Is a Private Affair both have conflicts against a central power, which influences the way in which the main character achieves their goal. In Ready Player One, Wade is faced with the conflict of an organization, the IOI, and in Marriage is a Private Affair, Nnaemeka is faced with the problem of his father disapproving of his choices. In the book Ready Player One, the main character Wade is faced with the problem of the IOI as competitors in the hunt for Halliday’s Easter egg, which contained billions of dollars and special OASIS effects such as immortality. In Ready Player One, Wade is conflicted with trying to achieve Halliday’s Easter egg and obtain all its riches, while in Marriage is a Private Affair, Nnaemeka is conflicted with trying to achieve his father’s approval on his marriage choice. Although both these stories include a protagonist facing a larger antagonist, in Ready Player One, Wade has helped in achieving his goal. “I think this might be Halliday’s way of telling us how many keys are required to open the Third Gate” (Cline 308). This quote proves that it took three different keys to open the Third Gate, implying that at least three of the characters had to reach it and work together in order to open the gate. However, in Marriage is a Private Affair, Nnaemeka has no help against proving his point to Okeke besides Nene, which Okeke isn’t very fond about in the first place. In Marriage is a Private Affair, although Okeke doesn’t like Nene, he doesn’t make it impossible for him to marry her and go against his word. This is unlike Ready Player One because whenever the IOI reached a gate or a key location before the gunters, they would put invincible shields up to make it impossible for anyone else besides the Sixers’ to make any progress on the hunt. Eventually, the gunters got ways of entering the shields, either by nuking them or killing the wizard that was keeping the shield up, but for the time being it was impossible for anyone to make any progress. In Marriage is a Private Affair, the antagonist Okeke also has other opinions about Nnaemeka. A quote that shows this is “Have you thought of consulting a native doctor about your son?” (Achebe 4). This quote shows that not only does Okeke think that something is wrong with his son, but other tribe members do too. The tribe members think that Nnaemeka is sick, so Okeke should consult
