Rebecca Felton was born Rebecca Ann Latimer on June 10, 1835 to plantation owners Eleanor and Charles Latimer. Her parents quickly recognized the intelligence in their first born and began to hire tutors when she was merely five years old. She would go on to attend school at a private school located in a Presbyterian Church, and then on to college at Madison Female College. Upon her 1852 graduation, she earned three distinct honors in that she was one of few women to receive a classical liberal arts education, she maintained the highest grades, and was the youngest member of her class at only seventeen. She would marry the speaker from her college graduation ceremony, Dr. William H. Felton, in October of 1853.

Born on May 4, 1844, in Martinsburg, Virginia, Boyd was the eldest of the eight children of Benjamin Reed and Mary Rebecca Boyd (Abbot). the age of 11, Boyd rode a horse into the family's home during a party to protest her exclusion from an adult dinner party and asked, “Well, my horse is old enough, isn’t he?”, which displayed her strong-willed, high-spirited and quick-witted personality (Moore). Boyd was able to receive a good education, and was able to attend the Mount Washington Female College in Baltimore, Maryland, even though her family were not the wealthiest. (Abbot).

Later, she married a man named Thomas and had children of her own. Her children were eventually sold to different plantations. She was only left with her infant daughter . Isabella Baumfree was a runaway slave. As the result of her children being sold, she was only able to escape to freedom with her infant daughter. After she obtained her freedom ,she went to court and challenged the validity of her son being sold into slavery. She was successful against so many odds in the court case. She won. Throughout one’s childhood, they will meet many people that will have an impact on how they live their everyday lives. For me, that individual is the Houston High School dance team coach, Jennifer Taylor. Jennifer Taylor came into practice each day ready to conquer anything. Even though she had a full-time job, she still put my dance team as one of her top priorities of her everyday life. Melinda Sordino is influenced by peer pressure because her friends went to a party where she ended up drinking and getting involved with a boy (Addy) who took advantage of her. I do not think I was ever involved with anything like this because my grandmother is a strict woman, so I was never aloud out of the house unless it was with family.
