Recycling is the process of reusing, reutilizing, and turning waste into new reusable items. This procedure is saving space in the landfills and conserving the natural recourses of raw materials being utilized. There have been many different opinions as to whether recycling is worth all the work, time, and cost of processing recycled material. Recycling has come a long way and has many benefits such as cost savings for consumers/businesses, construction/building with recycled materials, and the positive effects it has on the environment.
Recycling has been happening for thousands of years. “The first know recycling occurred in China around 100 A.D., when Ts’ai Lun invented paper by using reclaimed rags, worn fishnets, hemp, and china grass” (DePaolo). Recycling was not thought of as an environmental friendly need, but as an essential need for use in other products. Metals have been recycled for many centuries. Metals would be melted in molten metal and turned into many different uses such as tools, weapons, and building materials. Scrap metal during wars was in high demand due to the shortage of supplies. Recycling of scrap metal would prove to be an important part in the Second World War. There was a shortage for raw metals and recycling of used metal helped with the supply shortage.
