The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien is a book that should be read by teenagers today. It teaches a lot of things that would benefit teenagers and people in general. But there are a few things to consider before reading the book such as taste and sensitivity. Something interesting about the book is the point of view of the writer. He never once described war as only one thing or as good or bad. He describes it as a lot of things because there is no simple answer to describe a thing as complex as war. The book says “War is hell, but that's not the half of it, because war is also mystery and terror and adventure and courage and discovery and holiness and pity and despair and longing and love. O’Brien is very straightforward and crude he doesn’t try to make the truth pretty by adorning it to make it less obscene and more gentle. He makes you feel something with his true stories. His definition of truth is different from everyone else’s he likes to blur the line between reality and fiction because for him they are not all that different. As the book says “A thing may happen and be a total lie; another thing may not happen and be truer than the truth.” “That's what fiction is for. It's for getting at the truth when the truth isn't sufficient for the truth.” Also most of the time the reader doesn’t know whether something actually happened or not. And it’s a bit hard to follow the plot. Sometimes he starts telling a story and in the middle of it starts telling another story and at the middle of that story goes back to the first one and finish the second story in another chapter. So it would be good to leave notes or marks along the text to be able to follow the
